Heh. Found some truck debris in the ditch yesterday, and the two steel pipes, with solar lamps on top, that I placed to mark the ends of the culvert under my approach, have been knocked down. Spoke to my neighbor last evening. Seems like a buddy to #1 son got drunked up, and went fishtailing down the road in a 2014 Chevy pickup with woodland camo fender flares on it. Hit the ditch, bounced over my approach, knocking off a fender flare and an air dam, and then across the road, into the other ditch, and narrowly missed a road sign. #1 son says "****** will fix your posts for you." Uh, no thanks. I want it done right.

And I guess the smart money says: "take the lump sum", even if one is young enough to be fairly certain of collecting the entire annuity.
Lotto prizes here in Canada rarely rise to such levels as does Powerball. Might hit 40 million. But it is a cash payout, full sum, and it's tax-free here. So far...
I actually knew a couple who won six million bucks, and it couldn't have happened to nicer, more deserving people.

Awww.... the Lottery.... a hidden tax on those who don't know math...
the Payout is about 60% of the money taken in...
The payout is then TAXED, at a rate above 50% once you figure in State Taxes (in most States)...
Thus... only about 30% of the money people spend on the lottery, is ever given back out... the State takes the rest.
If Vegas had this payout, they would be put out of business by the State...

Sad but true. Money can change family dynamics very fast. I saw this play out when my parents and step-dad died. Relatives became vicious over the material things and cash and I stayed as far away from them as possible. Probably the biggest factor is fundamental: they were stupid enough to buy lottery tickets in the first place, and so have zero money sense.
So lottery winners have self-selected for 1) having no financial sense, 2) a tendency to plump for "Hail Mary" solutions to financial problems, and 3) oftentimes being broke because of #1 and 2.

My step cousins dad won a state lottery a few years back. $2 mill or so.
Blew through it in like 6 months. It was absurd.
Bought all kinds of toys -- new truck, snowmobiles, motorcycles, etc. etc. and a new house
Ended up having to sell a lot of it (at a huge loss, I'd imagine) to pay his taxes and utilities on his house.

Well, I am Canadian, and I am not under those restrictions. But say you won Powerball, you could go to those countries, and buy real estate, vacation homes. That shelters some wealth right there. Then, you could fly to your place in the Caymans with $9900 of gold in your pocket, and simply bury it in your garden there. Do that enough times, and you have a nest egg to live on there if you ever have to bug out.

The way it used to work is you got an exemption on the first $80 K or so (back when; probably more now), and then paid US and foreign taxes on everything over that.

The feds will take 39 or it maybe 42 percent now, then add your state.. in general take the Cash option figure *.50 and that's about what you'll have after the first tax filing, depending on your state, or how you arrange to 'collect' it you looking at keeping 58-50%.

Out of your post taxes lump sum, you buy your house, your car, and what ever else you need. You only pay taxes on your property and any investment income. No problem when you already have 50 mil in the bank.

Any government that can jail you for "structuring" is not above seizing bank accounts on some pretext. But obviously, if one were going to move cash or gold out of the country, one would not be making regular $9900 withdrawals from one's checking account, thereby triggering an investigation. Take out $100,000, and tell the bank you are buying gold to hold at home. That's currently legal, right? And once it's home, what you do with it is your business alone. Maybe you get off on tossing gold coins to strippers. You could even do that few times to create a myth. Then take chunks of your own gold with you to your offshore lairs.
