Overnight Open Thread (20 Nov 2015)

The new political correctness on campuses is going to get much, much worse.

Holiday Road Trips

If you haven't already, it's time to ensure your car is ready for any emergencies you may encounter. Some cold air has hit and I'm glad I already had some cold weather gear stored in the car. I do need to put the windshield scraper back in the trunk though and I highly recommend the head mounted light.

Storage Issues

How chemistry is rescuing our audio history. You do have to worry about disc rot with CD's though.

Sports News Bloopers

Some mild language involved so watch out if you're at work.

Breakup App

For $10, a new website will dump your girlfriend for you. I can't see this going very far.

George Lucas

Jeez. For someone who made a cool $4B, George Lucas still sounds bitter about Disney telling him to stay away from the new movies.

Bluegrass Cover Of Tetris

Drug Ads

I actually hope these prescription drug ads on TV friggin' go away. I'm so sick of hearing about every single side-effect known to man-kind being mentioned in one minute. Plus I'm tired of having to answer questions my kids have when they hear these commercials. Especially the ED commercials.

Iranian Tomcats

Video of Iranian F-14 Tomcats escorting Russian Tu-95 bomber.

Voting Nations

Interesting read on our voting nations.

The GOP, like the Democrat Party, is run by people living in the Acela Corridor and financed by people in the great financial, cultural and technological centers. Money men from Hollywood, Silicon Valley, New York and Boston own the two parties and exert a tremendous amount of influence over the management of the parties. The result is the leadership is Yankee and Midlands, with a few members from the other regions of the country.

Dog Tail Wagging

Evidently, dogs don't like lefties either.

Here we report that dogs looking at moving video images of conspecifics exhibiting prevalent left- or right-asymmetric tail wagging showed higher cardiac activity and higher scores of anxious behavior when observing left- rather than right-biased tail wagging.

5 I am dog tired and sore as hell. Spent most of my day wrestling a tent (and fabricating new parts where they were lost/broken). Then, when I got it built, I put cinderblocks around the outside and inside to seal the flaps, and built shelves inside, and started moving plants inside.

They seemed to have ratcheted the PC quotient up a few degrees as well, and it was stratospheric to begin with. Tolerable with a humorous Doctor like David Tennant or Matt Smith, but not with a Scots-mumbling prig like Capaldi.

I'm pretty disappointed with the series. Don't mind Capaldi so much, but plots & stories disappoint. Hit bottom with the moon is an egg episode, but has not risen much above that. Last Saturday's left us scratchin' the head. Just kinda stupid.

They won't take to that so this movement will be short lived.

Now they're tossing out Journos saying they're "adults" and can't be where the students are.

They're sounding like 3-5 year olds.

You know just smart enough and can talk enough and one of the first things they do is try bossing YOU around?

But really, they just need a strong pimp handed dean to come in and say in no uncertain terms; "enough of this shit, back to your dorms, back to your classes and quit being such big babies."

Is it wrong that I am already tired of Christmas/Christmas shopping, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet?

One (of the many) thing(s) I appreciated about living in Poland was that Christmas stuff didn't start until the first of December, and it was primarily a Christian holiday. In the malls, girls dressed as angels sold "oplatek", a large communion wafer imprinted with the holy Family, which was to be shared by family and friends on Christmas Eve. All proceeds went to orphanages. It was really nice.

The Poles aren't a vivacious group of people, like Southerners and Texans, but they are solid, decent people for the most part. I met a general from the Soviet era, while riding the bus to work one day. He was going to a memorial service, and chatted about how much better Poland was then, than before. He also laughed, saying it was nice to be able to say that without fear. That kind of stuff happened rather a lot. It was amazing history sitting with you on the 180 to downtown.

107 I'll have to rig the truck for winter. Another road trip from Galveston to Orlando, right after Thanksgiving.

Step mom (87 y/o), after a lifetime perfect driving record, totaled her Mazda mini van. Good news is, she only has airbag n' seatbelt bite, no real injuries. Van was totaled though.

More good news, her insurance actually paid significantly above market for the total. Nice to not have to fight the insurance for a fair settlement on it.

Now though, I've gotta go down and help her find and secure another set o' wheels. And to make her feel better through a bit of the holidays....the wreck really freaked her out.

So, marathon road trip with a torn up shoulder.

We Morons really know how to have fun.

Not unusual-the slavic languages will have slight variations in pronunciation. Probably a Shibboleth kind of thing to know if you were friend or foe. My dad was Russian, and we actually had a lot of customs growing up that were similar to the Polish ones, but when I would say it in Texan/Russian, the Poles were not amused. They would proceed to teach me the "proper" way to say it.

On a modern car, putting on a new fan belt, or alternator belt, or serpentine everything belt, in the tight underhood spaces, at roadside, after dark, in the winter, in a storm, can be a total bitch. If not impossible. Even if you have tools, specialized ones.

Change those suckers out for new, frequently. Cheap insurance. Throw the previous ones in the spare tire well, just in case, as backup.

I've seen strings of plastic links that are snap and match to fit, intended to get around the install complexities, but I haven't ever tried one of them. Hope to never have to do so.

I am Polish on my mother's side and my cousin visited Poland last summer. He had traced our family back on Ancestry.com to the 1500's and when he returned to the "family village" in north central Poland, he found quite a few with the same last name. He reported the same as you - they didn't fall over him and gush about their long-lost American cousin. However, they were friendly and kind and eager to talk to him - and they were very pro-American, despite the JEF in the WH.

He said their devotion is no myth. He is an (Anglican) priest and he and his wife found churches packed even for weekday morning Masses.

One Pole told him they would not have been able to survive Communism without their faith. But the Czechs (my dad's people) are the most atheistic people in Europe and they survived Communism OK. (From what I understand their attitude is closer to Ace's than it is to Bill Maher's - they don't hassle or mock people who are religious.)

It's weird how two neighboring Slavic countries who suffered immensely from both the Nazis and the Soviets developed completely different attitudes toward religion. I know that for the Poles, Catholicism = nationalist defiance of their rulers, while for Czechs, Catholicism was forced on them by their Austrian rulers during the days of the Hapsburgs, so maybe that's the difference.

In the malls, girls dressed as angels sold "oplatek", a large communion wafer imprinted with the holy Family, which was to be shared by family and friends on Christmas Eve.

My family still has those every Christmas Eve. You put honey on the wafers and the eldest one in the family dips a finger in the honey and makes the sign of the cross on everyone's forehead. (Which means I inevitably end up with honey in my hair on Christmas Eve.)

We get the wafers from our childhood parish which is a traditionally Polish one.

190 150- yep. churches were packed when we were there too. There was a convent and a monastery just down the street from our house, and we would run into novitiates all the time. They would want to speak English with us, to practice. Another church nearby had metal from the Twin Towers made into a cross. The priest loved America, and especially Ronald Reagan. My other favorite time was All Saints Day. Cemeteries packed with families placing candles on the family grave, church services all night, picnics, we saw one guy with a chicken but didn't really want to know what it was for, just a really special time.

One thing I wanted to know, but somehow felt like it was too personal to ask - how the f did she and her husband get out of Poland. OK that was in 1994 or so after the Commies had fallen. basically, 1 cup of greek yogurt + 1 1/2 cup of All-p self rising flour, which if you don't have means you make the 4-ingredient pizza dough.

1 1/2 cup APF
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt

add the 1 cup of flour, salt, bsoda to the yogurt and add in the remaining 1/2 cup of flour while mixing until it's not sticky. Roll out. Bake for 5 - 7min at 425. Add toppings. Bake for another 10 - 15 min.

It's on my short list, as well as TN, GA, and TX (of course!). Further afield are FL, AR, and AZ. Arkansas, for instance, is drop-dead gorgeous over most of the country, and is not removed from civilization by insane distances, but has tornado stats so bad you wonder how Oklahoma became associated with "tornado alley".

The reason the fiancee had their weather report up is that she's got a branch office there that is supposed to be providing customer support when it's 6AM-9AM out here -- so if there's any sort of weather that threatens it, she needs to know about it earlier than 3AM (here) that day.

250 In the book "Albion's Seed" the historian David Fischer-Price goes into the Yankee vs. Southerner accent issue.

Accents in England were incredibly varied during colonial times - Englishmen from West England rarely traveled to East or Northern England - London was really the only place where you got a mix of accents. There was no one standardized "Masterpiece Theatre" accent in the 1600's and 1700's.

People from East England - the Cambridge area - settled in New England and sounded - in the 1600's - much like New England Yankees still sound. Virginia was settled by aristos from Cornwall and Devonshire who drawled their words. The Mid-Atlantic states attracted Quakers from the English Midlands and what Fischer-Hackett calls "Borderers" - those from the borders of England and Scotland, settled the backwoods of the South.

The distinctive accents of Americans come from the distinctive accents of the first British settlers - and those settlers did not like or understand the people in the other sections.

Hackett-Fischer said the Yankee-Southerner divide existed back in England and can be seen as a family feud that carried over to the New World.

Posted by: Kindltot

Def not cracker crust. It's a slightly bread-like crust, depending on how your roll it out and cook it, but not a lofty, bread-like Pizza Hut pizza.

I didn't roll it, just flattened it by hand quickly because I was just testing.

If I do it again I'll roll it out thinner.

These are all prescription drugs, which means that you can't buy them without having a wizard doctor prescribe them for you. It is the wizard doctor's responsibility to tell you of the side effects and ask you if you are allergic to whatever and ask whatever other kinds of medicine you are taking. True if you're starting with raw dough. And a bear when using nat gas or propane ovens as they put out water vapor with combustion.

Wood stoves kick ass because of the heat and "it's a dry heat." Plus a leetle charring if you like.

The work around is just to pre-cook the crust, then add the toppings. The 2-ingredient recipe browns nicely on the bottom and top-side crust.

Yep. And Hackett-Fischer pointed out other differences that crossed the Atlantic.

For instance, the people of Cornwall and Devon liked fried foods. The story arose that slaves introduced fried chicken to southerners - but it's probably the white indentured servants who brought it across the pond.

The New Englanders from East England liked boiling their foods. But they also loved making pies - something they excelled at in New England, which has a good climate for growing apples.

322 I can't tell you how many times it was the pharmacist who told me about possible drug interactions with a new prescription, with the pharmacist having to call the doctor to confirm the possible deleterious side effects/conflict with my current meds of said prescription. My moral of the story: Get to know your pharmacist.

If a wizard doctor can't responsibly prescribe drugs then he shouldn't be prescribing them, at all. One of the main tasks of an MD is to have the magic power to prescribe certain drugs.

There was nothing cute or unicornish about it. MD are the only ones in our society who have the power to prescribe certain drugs for our use. It is their responsibility to know what they are prescribing, the side effects (which they are bound to tell us) and how they interact with other drugs we are taking.

We are responsible for our own health, contrary to ObamaCare. I trust my pharmacist on such matters. He runs a small pharmacy and he doesn't want to lose customers needlessly.

You cannot just take some drug because you think it will help you. You have to go to the medical oracle with the prescription power. That is just a fact.

As to pharmacists .. they weigh and sell drugs. That doesn't mean that they know all that much about them. They aren't authorized to prescribe drugs to anyone.

You trust your pharmacist? Good. But that doesn't let your wizard doctor off the hook in doing his job correctly.

If you think that there should be no such thing as prescriptions or controlled drugs and that everyone should be able to buy anything they want to handle their own health, then that is a whole other issue. But, in the world we have (BarkyCare or not) it is the doctor who is responsible for knowing what he's doing in prescribing drugs to you and not your responsibility to know everything about those drugs. If you want to know, then that's good, but you pay your doctor lots of money so that you don't have to know. People are supposed to be able to competently do the jobs they are paid to do. That's the whole point of paying someone to do something.

My posts may be boring. They may be over-long. They may be untimely. They may be unamusing or stupid or crass. But they are self-documenting.

Your post @331 12:12 referenced my post @299 12:08 which referenced your post @249 11:31. I see no gaps of more than an hour. As is usual, the gap between the original post and my response generally shrinks -- unless real life or a post that I research (like this one) intervenes.

Without going further into quibbles about timestamps, however, what did you find objectionable in @299? I'm just stream-of-consciousness sharing the way I go through the comments -- I'd love to hear about other ways and rational critiques of my methods, 'cause it would be lovely to improve.

340 The law varies from state to state, but pharmacists can be liable for deadly drug interactions. I think the rule is a pharmacist has a "duty to inform" and at least must tell the doctor and *document it*. Then it's on the doctor. Funny thing is, legally, depending on all these various factors, the pharmacist might not be required to tell the patient! Just tell the doctor, hey, there is a potentially serious interaction possible here, do you mean to prescribe this? If the doc say yes, then it's on him.

You can blame the law (and all the controlled substance crap as well) for your pharmacist getting uppity with you.

344 They did a study once, back in the '90s I think. They had test prescriptions written for two drugs, that if taken together, would be deadly, killing you dead right there. They went to various random pharmacies to see if they would catch it.

A small, but alarmingly high pecentage, something like 10% or better, filled them without batting an eye. That shook things up, and caused some initiatives to have better systems to catch stuff like that.

It may be one of those "Funny if you were there" stories, but here goes.

Several yrs ago I had to travel to San Diego to do some work for my company. This involved a lot of outside labor and I had to get a few temp guys to help me out for the 3 days I was there. (NOT Illegals btw)

So, they did a great job and busted ass working, so I took them out to lunch on my company. Everyone piled in the rental car and I drove down to the nearest cluster of food joints.

As we're driving along, I spotted a KFC and I innocently said "Hey, do you guys like fried chicken?".

There was s brief silence and then one of them said "Well, what do you think?".

Then it struck me. All of them were, let's say, of a darker complexion than I.

I looked at them and they were all grinning at me and we all started laughing.

So I said "Let's just get pizza then". And there was much rejoicing.

Hmmm, just a quick skim, sparks flying tonight for some reason?

Well as (thus far) my need for interaction with docs, pharmacists, lawyers, and therapists has been (thanks be to - insert you preferred deity/entity/concept here) minimal, I have nothing to add on that front.

I do recall, however, that when I returned to the country a few years back, having frolicked in a foreign land for a few years, I was stunned to learn I needed to wait in line at the pharmacy section and show ID and sign a book to buy ..... cold pills. That whole thing happened in my absence, I guess. Yeah, yeah, meth synthesizers and teenage abusers, blah blah blah. I recall a toned-down polite public rant - not directed at the pharmacist but the situation - and the pharmacist could only agree and the people behind me in line laughed, rolled their eyes, and said "yep, isn't that idiotic?".

So had my perfect medical consult today. A guy who plays at Friday hockey scrimmages is an orthopedist, and today against usual practice he wore a dark jersey, and against usual practice I played forward instead of defense, so on the bench I was able to get some answers/confirmations about two nagging but minor forearm/elbow problems.

But after a very fast/hard scrimmage (quality varies greatly by who shows up), and then the usual weight workout tonight, I am "appreciating" most muscle groups and parts of the body. I've stopped taking ibuprofen, switched to taking beer or wine, without a prescription or medical guidance, for relief.

And I'm more mangled by another happy pain - from lots of shooting on Thursday - than by today's exertions. Shoulder (Mosin and Garand) and right hand (troublesome Garand en bloc clips, and a 1911 with a burred grip screw and which always beats up my strong hand anyway).

A core axiom of the Left is that society is always designed and that things are a certain way because the state deemed it so. Society, being but the ultimate tabula rasa, is manipulated, in this view, like so many knobs and dials. If college students have debt or have to pay tuition, than this must obviously be due to the man (AKA, the "Kyriachy") oppressing the students.

I bought it because I saw a guy jump 4 Crown Vics from flat with it, and it would have done more. This thing rocks.

Both household cars are Hondas. Didn't do much research 'cause I might get lucky with a 9V Duracell in a pinch. Four Crown Vics is impressive.

390 "so anyone in here know anything about the portable jump starters, recommend a brand?"

The big classic lead-battery style, or the newer modern paperback-book lithium-battery style?

I personally want something that isn't yet made, which would be a heavy classic jump pack that would push as much amperage per unit mass as one of the high-tech modern lightweight mini units. And do that a few hundred times in a row.

WD, that's great. Went to the atomic testing museum the last (and really, first) time I was in Vegas, in Feb. BTW, I love the name of the museum's newsletter: The Blast (lol).

My buddy and I, who both worked in the field as broadly defined (policy side, not having fun touching off nukes) were impressed and depressed by the text and content in the museum. Impressed by its thoroughness and interesting presentation and the lack of idiotic revisionist crap - depressed because that last item is something that is noticeable and to be celebrated, now .....

Hoping to do the test site tour some day. Gotta book ahead though, limited capacity and (amazingly) enough weirdos out there like me who want to do it. I did have an uncle who worked on the Manhattan Project (not building barracks or slinging hash in Washington or Tennessee - as a metallurgist/physicist at Los Alamos). But I have my own interest. Also gotta do the Trinity site in NM, open to the public a few times a year I think.

395 I think the "breakup app" will do better than you think it will, CDR M.

See, here's the thing. Have you ever tried breaking up with a girl, only to have her argue that "no baby we can make it work and oh i love you so much and i know you still love me deep down and we just have to try" and all that?

Now, imagine you had paid a third party to break up with her on your behalf instead. Her response then is more likely to be "oh my god i can't believe it he's such an asshole and a loser to have to pay someone else to break up with me for him and now i want nothing more to do with him and i can't believe i ever let him inside me and..."

In other words, the breakup is more likely to take when it comes from a third-party source.

Of course, this only applies to a man using the app to break up with a woman. If a woman tries to use something like that to break up with a man, she's more like to get the opposite response. "No baby don't end it like this we just have to talk and i refuse to accept someone else telling me you don't want to see me anymore and i want to hear it from your own mouth and don't do this to me; no, i mean don't do this to US and...".

406 Oh I watched the first show of Jessica Jones, and its... boring. And slow. And they're trying really hard to make it gritty noir but the girl doesn't do very good voiceover and the writers really need to bone up on their hard boiled fiction.

It's ok, IMHO. But I'm a weirdo who likes slow buildup in a show. I think that the writers are taking advantage of being on Netflix to avoid the crisis of the week format you'd see with a network show. They know that people are going to watch 2-4 episodes, if not binge watch the whole thing, so they don't have to fit everything into a single episode.

Plus: I think its targeted at lesbians. Seriously, its got women all over being cool and guys being stupid and worthless, and a lesbian boss (Carrie Ann Moss who never was hot to me even in Matrix). Luke Cage is too small, too.

The lesbian lawyer is pretty scummy, which I don't think you'd expect if the show was trying to attract lesbian viewers. As for Luke Cage, any live-action adaptation of a comic book is going to have actors that look "small", because the characters in comics are often ridiculously big.

WD and others, speaking of nuclear museums, a friend of mine was once on a guvamint-sponsored speaking tour of Japan, and toured the Hiroshima "peace" museum with his foreign ministry handler.

When the guy asked him what he thought as they exited, he said "I guess you'll never attack *us* again".

In its own way a Churchillian line. Being Japanese, and a foreign ministry guide, the guy could do nothing but smile politely and say nothing.

My own reaction after touring the place with the now-wife was less memorable. "Not as bad as I expected". It actually wasn't 1/1,000th as bad as it would be if some idiotic self-hating American ignoramus had done it. Was very surprised by the extensive and well-done section on the physics and design of the bomb.

Last comment about museums, friend of mine loves the Palm Springs air museum, he brought a flyer from it recently and it looks very good. They had a lecture last weekend I was half-tempted to drive up for - "military history of the Salton Sea". Only thing I know in that connection is that primary practice target for the 509th group out of Utah (nuclear missions in Japan) was just north of the Salton Sea.

Have long wondering whether there's a monument of any sort on the site (if it's not still closed guvamint land, of which there is much out that way, some of it still used as bombing ranges).

Late, walking the dog yesterday. Trying to avoid watching him sniff every other whatever he sniffs. How low is it that we find meaning in our pets hobbies.

But, the streetlights, just humming now, cast some shadows that ... over there, that one seemed to shift.

Dog, done. He sniffs on. Chores are the small cross. Happy wife, happy life. Never mind that my master on the leash is the progeny of a wolf hound from somewhere in darkest prehistory who, in a former life, would sooner rip out my throat.

cm9000, memory is a bit foggy on details, it was mostly that there was such extensive space and effort devoted to that aspect of the events in 1945. Nothing wrong with it - on the contrary - but it seemed somewhat out of sync with the overall focus of the place.

Guess my favorite thing was the large room with an entire side with a glass wall giving a view of the central section of the beautiful modern city of Hiroshima. The other side has large inscribed quotes of some sort dealing in predictable ways with apocalyptic themes, mass destruction, horror of war, blah blah blah. One of the quotes was along the lines of "what does man do in the face of such awesome evil destructive badness?".

You read that, do a 180 towards the bright sunshine outside and the beautiful urban landscape of the city that rose from the ashes, and say ...... "um ..... that?".

From what I've read, the headquarters building was undamaged, being in a different part of the city, and was used as a temporary location for the municipal government in the aftermath. I'd like to see a map showing where the headquarters was in relation to the blast area, but I haven't been able to find that.

I have several 5-gallon pails filled with washed and dried drill cuttings from oil/gas wells. Probably 95% granulated shale, since I deliberately discarded sand-rich samples while gathering it. Use it to soak oil spills in the shop, but it also works fine as traction grit on sidewalks, etc. A little rain turns it into mud.

483 Resurrecting accents from above. Back in the '90s I believe, my mother and some of her friends went to hear some linguistics expert give a talk at Furman. He was a good linguist, a cunning linguist you might say, and he could pinpoint where you were born (well, where you learned to talk) within about 20 miles. I'm not joking. That's the detail he knew, and it's fascinating that such granularity is possible.

The funny thing was some people tried to fool him, including some faculty who had had acting experience. They weren't even close. My mother laughed as some woman was trying to fool the guy, and he smiled, and said, you're trying to fake either an X or Y accent, I can't tell which, but your real accent is Z.

By "either X or Y" he was telling her she wasn't doing a good job because she was doing didn't really exist, but yet was able to discern, easily, her real accent underneath.

You would have to be really, really good to fool an expert like that, and very few are that good.

495 But you miss the obvious.

Our President is so confident in his finely tuned bureaucratic apparatus that he can guarantee that no American will ever be harmed by ISIL, who are "contained" (or al Qaeda, who is "on the run").

All those slips in the past (i.e. OPM, DOJ, Solyndra, VA, healthcare.gov, IRS, ATF, or "Four dead in Benghazi") are in the past.
He has, at last, finally delivered "Change we can believe in."

So, the next time you hear of a disaster, fraud, waste or abuse, ask yourself ... "How does this affect the President's veracity ?"

I know you're saying .. "That's too much to ask." I say "Yes We Can."

498 There is still one pop-up greenhouse yet to deal with, but each one is an annoyance in another way -- because we have limited space, here, we have to tear apart our patio to put up the greenhouses. Then we put 'em up on the patio and move everyone in. If we had enough space for permanent greenhouse areas, all this drama would be unnecessary. It's not like greenhouses themselves are all that expensive -- I've looked into putting one up the size of our current residential lot* and pretending I still lived in California wherever I went, and it's not that expensive. But switching in-and-out is a pain.

* Our lot is 8192 square feet, and our house is 1910 on one floor. a 10,000-12,000 square foot greenhouse is only about $40,000. I could continue to raise orchids, citrus, gingers, and epiphytic cactus "outdoors" even in such frozen wastelands as Norfolk, VA if I just built my home inside such a greenhouse.

541 Just had a thought, looking at that link and its discussion about refugees, the perfect solution to the Syrian Refugees:

Settle them in Alaska.

Alaska's the size of the eastern half of the united states put together, has very few people to attack, and all of those people are very, very well armed- and it's a completely different climate to Syria.

If they're willing to settle in Alaska, and they make it through the screening process? Then I'm pretty sure we can accept them as legitimate. C'mon- what kind of terrorist is going to settle for blowing up a penguin? And what kind of widow or orphan is going to refuse sanctuary in America just because they have to spend some time in Alaska to get there?

The people that will refuse will be the people who were complaining about the quality of the free stuff they were given in Europe, the sort of refugees that, y'know, we're more than happy to let the Germans deal with.

The people that will accept will be desperate, freedom-loving people who're doing anything possible to help and save their family- and I think we can call that an American without too much trouble.

I even plated it like I'm an Iron Chef or something...

Only if you are overdubbed with a very liberal translation...

547 Poaching eggs is easy, and one of the healthiest ways to cook eggs. Hope you added a little vinegar to the water. Keeps those whites together.

549 Yep, Rick.
Vinegar in the water.
I learned the acid thing from America's Test Kitchen, I think. Yes, i'm a geek.

And Norfolk still sucks. You ain't missing anything.

Posted by: Chi at November 21, 2015 06:08 AM (GmBB1)

550 You know, chi, you can make Hollandaise in a blender. I've never done the stovetop method. The heat of the whirling blades cooks the yolks enough so they're safe. Lemon juice, cayenne, melted butter and egg yolks. Yummy stuff. I like to serve steamed broccoli with Eggs Benedict because Hollandaise goes so well with broccoli. A good excuse to make a big batch of Hollandaise.

551 chi, if you go upstairs on this thread in the discussion about accents and whatnot, you'll see that I typed Norfolk the way I pronounce it: NAH-fuck. I never met anybody from there who actually pronounces the 'l'. Some people do pronounce the 'or', but I never do.

Posted by: RickZ at November 21, 2015 06:17 AM (Lc+NQ)

552 551
We don't smoke
And we don't chew
NAH-fuck
NAH-fuck
NAH-fuck

553 There is a Surf Rider right around the corner that goes through a couple hundred pounds of broccoli a week. I don't know what they do, but it's steamed perfectly, and that hollandaise is like heaven.

And Sandfiddler down in Ocean View - their eggs Benedict with soft shelled crab & fresh spinach - dude...

Posted by: Chi at November 21, 2015 06:25 AM (GmBB1)

554 You got that wrong, Panhandler. It's

We don't drink
We don't smoke
Nor-fuck!
Nor-fuck!

I saw Little Feat sing that ditty in concert in . . . NAH-fuck.

Posted by: RickZ at November 21, 2015 06:25 AM (Lc+NQ)

555 554
I stand corrected, but then it's been a long time since I was in Nor-fuck.

Scope? Don't tell me - The Boathouse!
With Lowell George or was he gone already?

Posted by: Chi at November 21, 2015 06:33 AM (GmBB1)

557 chi, 1977 at the old Tides Stadium (near the airport). Lowell George was still around then. Bonnie Raitt opened and bombed. At one point near the end of her set, she said, 'Do I hear the patter of Little Feat?' They came out and saved her ass.

558 Heh.
Met Park. I was 10 in '77, and used to walk up there to watch games.
(Or sit outside to catch foul balls if I didn't have money)
I don't remember concerts there, though. Ever.

Posted by: Chi at November 21, 2015 06:46 AM (GmBB1)

559 Well, all I can say is I went to a concert there. I do remember a few others, though I didn't attend. They also used to have high school football games there, too.

Oh, and get off my lawn, you young whippersnapper!

Posted by: RickZ at November 21, 2015 06:53 AM (Lc+NQ)

560 Best way to cook eggs is to fry a couple of sausages in a pan, take them out, then cook your eggs in the grease. Delicious!

Meh. We're still young enough to remember Met Park, so there's that.

How about i buy you a burger at the Wooden Nickel? Would that help?

Posted by: Chi at November 21, 2015 07:05 AM (GmBB1)

562 Is that place still around?
