I'm pretty disappointed with the series. Don't mind Capaldi so much, but plots & stories disappoint. Hit bottom with the moon is an egg episode, but has not risen much above that. Last Saturday's left us scratchin' the head. Just kinda stupid.

Is it wrong that I am already tired of Christmas/Christmas shopping, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet?
One (of the many) thing(s) I appreciated about living in Poland was that Christmas stuff didn't start until the first of December, and it was primarily a Christian holiday. In the malls, girls dressed as angels sold "oplatek", a large communion wafer imprinted with the holy Family, which was to be shared by family and friends on Christmas Eve. All proceeds went to orphanages. It was really nice.

Step mom (87 y/o), after a lifetime perfect driving record, totaled her Mazda mini van. Good news is, she only has airbag n' seatbelt bite, no real injuries. Van was totaled though.
More good news, her insurance actually paid significantly above market for the total. Nice to not have to fight the insurance for a fair settlement on it.
Now though, I've gotta go down and help her find and secure another set o' wheels. And to make her feel better through a bit of the holidays....the wreck really freaked her out.
So, marathon road trip with a torn up shoulder.

Not unusual-the slavic languages will have slight variations in pronunciation. Probably a Shibboleth kind of thing to know if you were friend or foe. My dad was Russian, and we actually had a lot of customs growing up that were similar to the Polish ones, but when I would say it in Texan/Russian, the Poles were not amused. They would proceed to teach me the "proper" way to say it.

On a modern car, putting on a new fan belt, or alternator belt, or serpentine everything belt, in the tight underhood spaces, at roadside, after dark, in the winter, in a storm, can be a total bitch. If not impossible. Even if you have tools, specialized ones.
Change those suckers out for new, frequently. Cheap insurance. Throw the previous ones in the spare tire well, just in case, as backup.
I've seen strings of plastic links that are snap and match to fit, intended to get around the install complexities, but I haven't ever tried one of them. Hope to never have to do so.

Look, the 7.62x25 is no longer cheap and is a bit overrated. If you find surplus, watch out. I'm pretty sure I have some that MAY or MAY not blow up my CZ-52 pistol. I'm not sure so I have not shot it. God help you if you get it mixed in with the "safe" stuff like I have. No, it was not me that caused it to happen BTW.
Build an AK-47 pistol. It beats the crap out of the PPS43 in every way.

I heartily recommend Warsaw/Krakow and maybe Gdansk in Poland, Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary. We loved each place. I would hesitate to spend much time in Western Europe now. Eastern European countries know a thing or two about being overrun, and they aren't going to put up with it.

I have a vague recollection that someone built a synthetic language, with basic vocabulary and simplified grammar, that was supposed to be able to get you by on a rudimentary basis in any Slavophone country, though the locals might laugh. I wasn't able to evaluate it on its merits because I have no real chops in those tongues.

The pinned "pistol" PPS is fun to shoot, but after a while, it pales. And of course ATFE rules being what they are, you can never be sure if turning it into a rifle isn't a violation - and it probably is. A friend had one and sold it for more than what he bought it for.

I am Polish on my mother's side and my cousin visited Poland last summer. He had traced our family back on Ancestry.com to the 1500's and when he returned to the "family village" in north central Poland, he found quite a few with the same last name. He reported the same as you - they didn't fall over him and gush about their long-lost American cousin. However, they were friendly and kind and eager to talk to him - and they were very pro-American, despite the JEF in the WH.
He said their devotion is no myth. He is an (Anglican) priest and he and his wife found churches packed even for weekday morning Masses.
One Pole told him they would not have been able to survive Communism without their faith. But the Czechs (my dad's people) are the most atheistic people in Europe and they survived Communism OK. (From what I understand their attitude is closer to Ace's than it is to Bill Maher's - they don't hassle or mock people who are religious.)
It's weird how two neighboring Slavic countries who suffered immensely from both the Nazis and the Soviets developed completely different attitudes toward religion. I know that for the Poles, Catholicism = nationalist defiance of their rulers, while for Czechs, Catholicism was forced on them by their Austrian rulers during the days of the Hapsburgs, so maybe that's the difference.

That could work. The Slavic languages broke apart around the same time as Vulgar Latin broke apart into the Romance tongues. So the same way someone who knows French and Spanish can blunder her way through Italy and Portugal, someone else who knows Russian and Bulgarian can probably stumble through the Czech Republic

Seriously, I was lucky enough to buy some 7.62x25 when it was dirt cheap...aka surplus...aka variable quality...and corrosive. It's no longer cheap or as plentiful. Plus you would have to stock for yet another caliber that does not provide any real advantage over other cartridges.
What happens when you get tired of it? safe queen? Sell it for a probable loss?
On a whim I started building an AR-15. I'm almost done and I realized I have the parts to build an AKM in .223 for about $150.
I do wish I had spent that money elsewhere.

I think Clara from Doctor Who is incredibly hot and really liked her with Matt Smith.
But last season was pretty horrible. Every damn episode almost focusing around Danny Pink - what the hell? I DVR'd the season and it was painful to get through, and I don't think I'm that nit-picky about sci-fi shows.
This season has had very good episodes. And I still like Clara. The Doctor - meh. The sunglasses and guitar are a bit much....

I once worked at a DC law firm, Wilmer Cutler and Pickering. I was in the cafeteria one day and the cashier lady said to me, in a thick Polish accent, "You look just like a Polish girl!" I am the spitting image of my mom and have blonde hair and blue eyes and so I told her my mom was 100% Polish.
After that, she would chat with me whenever she saw me. She was from Krakow. She mentioned that she had been married by JPII back in the day when he was the bishop of Krakow. One thing I wanted to know, but somehow felt like it was too personal to ask - how the f did she and her husband get out of Poland. OK that was in 1994 or so after the Commies had fallen. Still, how does someone in a poor exCommie country find the resources to up and move to Washington DC? She was working as a cashier so I doubt she had been a Party member.

Mel asked which southern accent specifically it was that they wanted, and proceeded to reel off twenty different laser-accurate sub-Southern dialects, correctly identifying each one, and wowing everyone on the set who was from the South. The rest is cartoon history.

In the nic in the comment above.
basically, 1 cup of greek yogurt + 1 1/2 cup of All-p self rising flour, which if you don't have means you make the 4-ingredient pizza dough.
1 1/2 cup APF
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
add the 1 cup of flour,salt, bsoda to the yogurt and add in the remaining 1/2 cup of flour while mixing until it's not sticky. Roll out. Bake for 5 - 7min at 425. Add toppings. Bake for another 10 - 15 min.

Arkansas, for instance, is drop-dead gorgeous over most of the country, and is not removed from civilization by insane distances, but has tornado stats so bad you wonder how Oklahoma became associated with "tornado alley".
The reason the fiancee had their weather report up is that she's got a branch office there that is supposed to be providing customer support when it's 6AM-9AM out here -- so if there's any sort of weather that threatens it, she needs to know about it earlier than 3AM (here) that day.

Accents in England were incredibly varied during colonial times - Englishmen from West England rarely traveled to East or Northern England - London was really the only place where you got a mix of accents. There was no one standardized "Masterpiece Theatre" accent in the 1600's and 1700's.

Hackett-Fischer said the Yankee-Southerner divide existed back in England and can be seen as a family feud that carried over to the New World.

Def not cracker crust. It's a slightly bread-like crust, depending on how your roll it out and cook it, but not a lofty, bread-like Pizza Hut pizza.
I didn't roll it, just flattened it by hand quickly because I was just testing.
If I do it again I'll roll it out thinner.

These ads are the most annoying of any. And the crap about the side effects makes absolutely no sense, at all. These are all prescription drugs, which means that you can't buy them without having a wizard doctor prescribe them for you. It is the wizard doctor's responsibility to tell you of the side effects and ask you if you are allergic to whatever and ask whatever other kinds of medicine you are taking. It specifically is NOT the patient's responsibility. That's the whole point of having prescriptions and controlled drugs and wizard doctors.

True if you're starting with raw dough. And a bear when using nat gas or propane ovens as they put out water vapor with combustion.
Wood stoves kick ass because of the heat and "it's a dry heat." Plus a leetle charring if you like.
The work around is just to pre-cook the crust, then add the toppings. The 2-ingredient recipe browns nicely on the bottom and top-side crust.
'Though it had spots of 'gelling' mostly because I flattened it by hand, not with a roller.

It is on the 2nd tier list -- but a significant portion of it is hotter than blazes (and I've been there and done that -- where I went to High School, it hit 127 one summer) and the places where it is more temperate are way the hell and gone outta Dodge. I got tired of him, he's made it clear he hates Repubs, but while I was watching The Late Late Show with James Corden (Craig Ferguson's replacement), he was occasionally doing a funny bit called "Side Effects May Include." He would list the side effects of things like... Men Wearing Flip Flops, or Becoming Obsessed With Yoga.
Gotta admit there was some funny stuff there. Will probably continue to tune into Corden's show, but (a) avoid the sponsors and (b) the first 10 minutes to stay away from his monologue.

You cannot just take some drug because you think it will help you. You have to go to the medical oracle with the prescription power. That is just a fact.
As to pharmacists .. they weigh and sell drugs. That doesn't mean that they know all that much about them. They aren't authorized to prescribe drugs to anyone.
You trust your pharmacist? Good. But that doesn't let your wizard doctor off the hook in doing his job correctly.
If you think that there should be no such thing as prescriptions or controlled drugs and that everyone should be able to buy anything they want to handle their own health, then that is a whole other issue. But, in the world we have (BarkyCare or not) it is the doctor who is responsible for knowing what he's doing in prescribing drugs to you and not your responsibility to know everything about those drugs. If you want to know, then that's good, but you pay your doctor lots of money so that you don't have to know. People are supposed to be able to competently do the jobs they are paid to do. That's the whole point of paying someone to do something.

Several yrs ago I had to travel to San Diego to do some work for my company. This involved a lot of outside labor and I had to get a few temp guys to help me out for the 3 days I was there. (NOT Illegals btw)
So, they did a great job and busted ass working, so I took them out to lunch on my company. Everyone piled in the rental car and I drove down to the nearest cluster of food joints.
As we're driving along, I spotted a KFC and I innocently said "Hey, do you guys like fried chicken?".
There was s brief silence and then one of them said "Well, what do you think?".
Then it struck me. All of them were, let's say, of a darker complexion than I.
I looked at them and they were all grinning at me and we all started laughing.
So I said "Let's just get pizza then". And there was much rejoicing.

My niece is studying pharmacy. I couldn't be prouder -- and, yes, they absolutely know more about drug interactions. That's the division of labor -- physicians know drugs v. symptoms; pharmacists know drugs v. drugs.

Stay away from the chains as med costs are pretty much determined by one's insurance plan. Mine is a small independent pharmacy. I moved to him after dealing with multiple crappy pharmacists at Rite Aid. The chain pharmacists are employees, mine runs his own business.

Well as (thus far) my need for interaction with docs, pharmacists, lawyers, and therapists has been (thanks be to - insert you preferred deity/entity/concept here) minimal, I have nothing to add on that front.
I do recall, however, that when I returned to the country a few years back, having frolicked in a foreign land for a few years, I was stunned to learn I needed to wait in line at the pharmacy section and show ID and sign a book to buy ..... cold pills. That whole thing happened in my absence, I guess. Yeah, yeah, meth synthesizers and teenage abusers, blah blah blah. I recall a toned-down polite public rant - not directed at the pharmacist but the situation - and the pharmacist could only agree and the people behind me in line laughed, rolled their eyes, and said "yep, isn't that idiotic?".

So had my perfect medical consult today. A guy who plays at Friday hockey scrimmages is an orthopedist, and today against usual practice he wore a dark jersey, and against usual practice I played forward instead of defense, so on the bench I was able to get some answers/confirmations about two nagging but minor forearm/elbow problems.
But after a very fast/hard scrimmage (quality varies greatly by who shows up), and then the usual weight workout tonight, I am "appreciating" most muscle groups and parts of the body. I've stopped taking ibuprofen, switched to taking beer or wine, without a prescription or medical guidance, for relief.
And I'm more mangled by another happy pain - from lots of shooting on Thursday - than by today's exertions. Shoulder (Mosin and Garand) and right hand (troublesome Garand en bloc clips, and a 1911 with a burred grip screw and which always beats up my strong hand anyway).

WD, that's great. Went to the atomic testing museum the last (and really, first) time I was in Vegas, in Feb. BTW, I love the name of the museum's newsletter: The Blast (lol).

See, here's the thing. Have you ever tried breaking up with a girl, only to have her argue that "no baby we can make it work and oh i love you so much and i know you still love me deep down and we just have to try" and all that?
Now, imagine you had paid a third party to break up with her on your behalf instead. Her response then is more likely to be "oh my god i can't believe it he's such an asshole and a loser to have to pay someone else to break up with me for him and now i want nothing more to do with him and i can't believe i ever let him inside me and..."
In other words, the breakup is more likely to take when it comes from a third-party source.
Of course, this only applies to a man using the app to break up with a woman. If a woman tries to use something like that to break up with a man, she's more like to get the opposite response. "No baby don't end it like this we just have to talk and i refuse to accept someone else telling me you don't want to see me anymore and i want to hear it from your own mouth and don't do this to me; no, i mean don't do this to US and...".

It's ok, IMHO. But I'm a weirdo who likes slow buildup in a show. I think that the writers are taking advantage of being on Netflix to avoid the crisis of the week format you'd see with a network show. They know that people are going to watch 2-4 episodes, if not binge watch the whole thing, so they don't have to fit everything into a single episode.
Plus: I think its targeted at lesbians. Seriously, its got women all over being cool and guys being stupid and worthless, and a lesbian boss (Carrie Ann Moss who never was hot to me even in Matrix). Luke Cage is too small, too.
The lesbian lawyer is pretty scummy, which I don't think you'd expect if the show was trying to attract lesbian viewers. As for Luke Cage, any live-action adaptation of a comic book is going to have actors that look "small", because the characters in comics are often ridiculously big.

My own reaction after touring the place with the now-wife was less memorable. "Not as bad as I expected". It actually wasn't 1/1,000th as bad as it would be if some idiotic self-hating American ignoramus had done it. Was very surprised by the extensive and well-done section on the physics and design of the bomb.

Last comment about museums, friend of mine loves the Palm Springs air museum, he brought a flyer from it recently and it looks very good. They had a lecture last weekend I was half-tempted to drive up for - "military history of the Salton Sea". Only thing I know in that connection is that primary practice target for the 509th group out of Utah (nuclear missions in Japan) was just north of the Salton Sea.
Have long wondering whether there's a monument of any sort on the site (if it's not still closed guvamint land, of which there is much out that way, some of it still used as bombing ranges).

cm9000, memory is a bit foggy on details, it was mostly that there was such extensive space and effort devoted to that aspect of the events in 1945. Nothing wrong with it - on the contrary - but it seemed somewhat out of sync with the overall focus of the place.
Guess my favorite thing was the large room with an entire side with a glass wall giving a view of the central section of the beautiful modern city of Hiroshima. The other side has large inscribed quotes of some sort dealing in predictable ways with apocalyptic themes, mass destruction, horror of war, blah blah blah. One of the quotes was along the lines of "what does man do in the face of such awesome evil destructive badness?".
You read that, do a 180 towards the bright sunshine outside and the beautiful urban landscape of the city that rose from the ashes, and say ...... "um ..... that?".

I have several 5-gallon pails filled with washed and dried drill cuttings from oil/gas wells. Probably 95% granulated shale, since I deliberately discarded sand-rich samples while gathering it. Use it to soak oil spills in the shop, but it also works fine as traction grit on sidewalks, etc. A little rain turns it into mud.

The funny thing was some people tried to fool him, including some faculty who had had acting experience. They weren't even close. My mother laughed as some woman was trying to fool the guy, and he smiled, and said, you're trying to fake either an X or Y accent, I can't tell which, but your real accent is Z.
By "either X or Y" he was telling her she wasn't doing a good job because she was doing didn't really exist, but yet was able to discern, easily, her real accent underneath.
You would have to be really, really good to fool an expert like that, and very few are that good.
