32 Is anyone going to watch Trump on SNL tonight? I haven't watched it and not watched with passion since the end of '08 when it became apparent Barky was to be reified and by all comedians. Although I think Leno started going after him a bit normally there at the end when they'd given him the boot, didn't he?

Maybe I just won't watch and will read if anything happens. I hope Trump himself says all the words and phrases those idiot groups want infiltrators to say and then demands payment, which goes to his campaign.

Mrs. Crank and I said goodbye to our beloved St. Bernard tonight. She has been with Mrs. Crank for over 12 years, and part of my life for the past 6. There were many tears of sadness, but also laughing with stories about her. Our vet cried with us after it was done. Son of Crank also loved her, and though he is probably too young to remember his time with her clearly, I have no doubt he will notice she is gone.

So, I am sitting here, sipping on Glenfiddich 12, and alternately smiling and wiping the dust away from my eyes.

45 This is for you Chi and CDR M (Chesapeake bubbas) - Grassfield High Cheerleaders won the 6A state Championship this evening, Great Bridge came in 4th (after 2 drops in 2nd performance - in first place going into 2nd round), and Hickory failed to advance due to a ruling of using an "illegal pyramid" that they had been using the last three competitions without a problem. They were robbed - their routine was the most challenging (and thus more potential points) of all the teams there. They would have won it walking away. Hickory won the last two years and this should have been a three-peat.

My eldest daughter is on the team (Junior) and was devastated.

73 Hey they've been hiding stuff for years. Or at least not pursuing the obvious.

There's a money laundering scheme being worked out of every Union business office in any Gov't that is predominantly Democrat.

The Democrats "negotiate" with the Union for a contract. The Union takes a portion of the members salaries and then donates it to the Democrats they "negotiate" with.

That's called money laundering.

It's why there should be NO Unions in Government OR they shouldn't be allowed to contribute to politicians.

One is easier to outlaw than the other.

If we could only reverse the Federal Government Unions we could possibly start making some inroads on the overspending in Government.

After the routine, we were all like "Oh, we GOT this!" They were nearly perfect. Then we saw the Coach and the lead judge having an animated conversation. They docked us just enough points to keep us out of contention. It's the arbitrary rule interpretation that galls. It's like the judges for all the qualifying competitions and the state competition judges aren't reading from the same book.

In peacetime the Swiss Air Force provides ready-to-take-off aircraft only during office hours on working days. Air Force staff regarded a peacetime 24/7 operational-flying status as "mission impossible" due to budget limitations and limited professional (flying) personnel capacity.

Posted by: mindful webworker - electorally at November 07, 2015 10:38 PM (8DIzj)

95 Didn't they used to alternate colors from presidential election to election? I think I remember seeing the electoral map in '84 as a sea of blue for Reagan with Mondale's Minnesota as the lone red state, with the sliver of D.C. which always goes Commie.

I don't remember the colors in '80. That was the first election I was aware of enough to watch and know what was going on. I remember that night my father and mother smiling big smiles of relief and going to be with the all-is-well feeling. The next morning, everyone had a spring their step. Before then, it was constant lambasting of Peanut Carter, and woe is this nation.

Carter was great compared to Barky. Carter is the fermented product, while Barky and his minions are the distilled concentrated essence.

163 Ok, some stories about our dear Koda (who was a female, btw--Mrs. Crank always bought her pink leashes and collars because strangers assumed she was a he based on size).

--She physically placed herself between Mrs. Crank and her abusive 1st husband so he could not hurt her--still a puppy at that time, and she succeeded.

--She used to jump up on and play with my father-in-law all the time, and he spoiled her rotten with Happy Meals. After he suffered a stroke, she always acted very sedate around him so as not to knock him over.

--My first meeting with Koda was around 1:00 am, almost exactly 6 years ago. I picked up Mrs. Crank from work after driving from Detroit to Columbus to meet her and rekindle our friendship, which by then had evolved to romance. This was the first time I had seen her in almost 18 months. We got to the house, she went into the bedroom to change and I was sitting on the couch in the living room. Koda, being a St. Bernard (mastiff breed), likes to smack with her paws to get your attention, and she wanted me to scratch her ears. I told her "no," and swatted her nose with two fingers. I thought I was disciplining her, but she thought I was playing "the hitting game". So it went for 10 minutes straight, she would smack me on the leg and I would smack her on the nose, before Mrs. Crank came into the room laughing and explained that the dog would keep this up all night.

167 Ah, Benny Hill. Just the mention of his name and I'm chuckling with that crazy chase theme music in my head.

One scene that comes to mind. He's standing next to a tree with a bucket of water, and begins to smile and act stupid when he sees a couple of pretty girls looking at him. Somebody is shooting at him, or by some other means, projectiles are being fired. One hits the bucket and a stream of water comes out. From the girls perspective, it looks like he's peeing behind the tree.

He's waving at them with an idiotic smile. Then the second projectile comes along, knocks another hole in the bucket and two streams come out. The girls are really impressed then.

You remember the woman on Frasier, actress who played whats-her-name, English accent, Daphne, I believe it was. Did I get it mixed up or did she get her start as one of Benny's girls?

Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave.
And if a man starts to weaken,

For Bama's pluck and grit have
Writ her name in Crimson flame.
Fight on, fight on, fight on men!
Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then.
Go, roll to victory,
Hit your stride,
You're Dixie's football pride,
Crimson Tide, Roll Tide, Roll Tide!!

194 More Koda stories:

--Our first Thanksgiving after we were married, I was still living in Detroit and Mrs. Crank drove up with Koda and her brother to make me Thanksgiving dinner at my apartment. Koda had been a little off, and wasn't eating when she first arrived, which wasn't too unusual with travelling. However, when a day later she turned her nose up at a White Castle cheeseburger, we knew something was wrong. She had a massive infection of her uterus and needed emergency sugery, which I forked over the money for without hesitation. She came through with flying colors and we had almost 5 more years with her.

--Her last cycle before this infection coincided with Mrs. Crank taking in a rescue kitten, who weighed not even 2 pounds. Koda began lactating and this kitten would nurse on her. This past week, that damn cat was still trying to nurse on her, even though the milk dried up years ago, and Koda never complained about it. We think she thought the kitten was literally her puppy.

--Later that same winter, I was down visiting in Columbus, with several inches of ice and snow on the ground. Koda wanted out late at night and promptly took off across the street, barking at and banging on the neighbor's door at 2 am. I grabbed her collar and started pulling her back across the road when she decided to take off, causing me to lose my footing and land flat on my back on the ice. I was still trying to figure out if I had broken anything when Koda turned around and her instincts kicked in. Bounding over as fast as she could, she flopped down on top of me to prevent hypothermia. So, I'm lying in the middle of the street (fortunately not a busy one), barely able to move before 150 pounds of dog pounced on me, and so I just start laughing, lying there until Mrs. Crank could get over to get the dog off me.

It was nice, but if you ever get the chance to visit San Diego, the Stone brewpubs are Epicurean delights. Some years back, we visited them two nights in a row for the food (the fiancee rarely drinks, and she was totally onboard with this). The only thing we repeated between us both over two nights was my soup. Posted by: a civet, tired of making poop coffee at November 08, 2015 12:24 AM (REdlt)

359 Losing dogs.... First was Mukluk, who mostly went by just "muk." People gave us dirty looks for that name, but it fit. He was the smartest dog I've ever met. He was a sled dog mix, could tell out of an entire box of dog toys which was the golf ball, the tennis ball, the jingle ball, etc. We would take him hiking in the mountains and he would be across the valley halfway up the other side, you could whistle once and he would come crashing through the brush and the creek hell bent for leather. He would sometimes howl in his sleep, if he heard music. He sang to the ice cream truck, to my mom's violin practice (she finally gave it up, for the neighbor's sake), and he was deathly afraid of hot air balloons, which were very popular in the late '70's.

I had to take him to be put down from Cushing's disease. My dad was never the same after that.

And Sophie, my dog in college, little sheltie mix, such a little prissy lady. She got a rash on her back end and they shaved her and she was too embarrassed to go outside and do her business. She also perfected the art of peeing with all four legs off the ground when it got below zero. She died because she ate everything, including carpet and, tragically, an entire ball of bailing twine. The vet took it out, but she didn't ever wake up.

Honestly, I can probably tell you more specifics of my dogs than my kid. The little fuzzballs do that to you.

Posted by: tcn in AK at November 08, 2015 12:24 AM (+YMhA)

360 340: Yes. It was some sort of compulsion. I'm sure it was some smell given off by the beans which, with some quirk of his system, just drove him into insane compulsive eating mode.

We had to literally pull him away. We would be augering beans into one of the bins, dumping them in a steady stream in the auger hopper. He'd come up and stick his nose and mouth in that hopper with the auger going (it had a guard, but his tongue would likely fit through) and just start gorging himself.

He'd whimper and growl when you first pulled him away.

And his digestive system did nothing to the beans at all, save wet them and make them swell a bit. And they'd come out so fast. It was like some super fiber-laxative.

I believe if we'd have let him, he would have just sat there eating as fast as he could, and start continuously shitting them out.

380 This same dog pulled another ridiculous trick with some other farm operations. One afternoon, after I got back from high school, I had tasking orders from my father to fill up the big sprayer with Roundup solution and spray a small 14 acre or so little field close the house. That dog followed me around.

Now, apparently those teejet nozzles make a high frequency sound that we humans can't hear, but dogs can. I wasn't paying much attention, but heard somethind funny, and it turned it out it was that stupid dog following behind the spayer right in the middle behind the tank where you couldn't see.

He howling and growling at the nozzles, jumping up trying to bite them, and getting covered in Roundup solution. Well, that tore it. I led him back to the house, and by that time, my mother was home. He loved her the most of all, and would stay around her in preference to all. She agreed to stay with him for a while while I got out of there.

Well, we weren't thinking and the idiot rolled over the yard. With his roundup soaked coat. He killed little patches of grass all over the place.

One of my dogs determined that bicycles were evil. She had never had a bad experience, but they must all die. She was terrified of the ones people parked in the apartment lobby or hallway, and she would bark at them or grown and then scoot past as fast as she could.

Of course, she also had it out for the statue of the BVM in front of the convent on the next block. She would stand there and bark her head off while the nuns looked at her askance.

Some dogs get the strangest notions, and then you just have to shrug and learn to live with it. Heaven only knows which brain cell is misfiring, but there's no stopping it.

423 ANd I'm glad it was just Roundup (and some surfactant, IIRC). Roundup had just been out for a few years back then (80s), or was in common use for just a few years.

Before that, we used Paraquat for burn down, which is highly toxic. Had that dog got coated in that, it would've been bad for him, not just the grass.

Roundup is not toxic. Now I think if you drank the concentrate, it wouldn't be pleasant, but it won't kill you. I don't think. I think it would be one hell of a digestive distress event, but I can't remember.

There was a guy who worked for the one of the chemical companies. He got depressed and suicidal and went out in the warehouse and drank a coffee mug of Paraquat concentrate.

The fool thought it would kill him quickly. No, it killed him, but slowly and excruciatingly. When they got him to the hospital, IIRC, it was too late, the damage was irreversible, and it was all over but the slow dying. Many of his organs were basically dead, it just took a while for him to die.

I think they just put him in a coma so he wouldn't be conscious and waited for the end.

I X'd out the lower half as well as all the equal matches, and resistanced-checked 'em all.

And they totally fell into line. Coil A is Pink/Blue with centertap at black; Coil B is Yellow/Beige with centertap at White. I've got the motor hooked-up to the power board. Now I just have to hook up the power to the power board and the signal to the control board, and see if things work.

Thanks. Next time I see her, I'll try to think of something.

What, no love for Gemini? That was a crucial bridge between Mercury and Apollo. Mercury proved that they could launch a man into orbit, he could survive in space, and could be recovered safely. During Gemini they did endurance missions, and learned how to do rendezvous and docking, as well as EVA. All of which were vital to master before Apollo could go to the moon.

I LIKE Ted Cruz, and would be thrilled to see him win it all.

It's not unreasonable to postulate that it'll take everything Mr. Trump can bring to bear, to pave the way to a Cruz administration.

Even if it's a Trump/Cruz ticket.

And Jeb can make a 3rd party run for all I care.

It's not unreasonable to postulate that it'll take everything Mr. Trump can bring to bear, to pave the way to a Cruz administration.

Even if it's a Trump/Cruz ticket.

And Jeb can make a 3rd party run for all I care.

He won't peel off enough support to matter one whit.

452 It appears the secret military exercise in the Pacific off of LA involves at least one missile launch. About an hour and half ago I watched what appeared to be a rocket or missile of some type streak across the sky. It seemed to come from the ocean and was headed north so, I know it wasn't a Vandenberg launch as they head south over So.Cal. It was pretty cool to see. You could even see when the stage separation happened. So,maybe a sea launched satellite?

454 My parents had a moon landing party. While the adults were drinking, I was barely on antibiotics for ear infections. Since we were cat-sitting a mom and her litter, I sat on the living room floor blinking and head shaking to try to get the kittens off of the the ladder to the moon surface. I knew they weren't there, shouldn't be there, but I was so tired and kept seeing them there.

Beer Ninja, hmmm. Cannot think why an orbital or sub-orbital launch would be done from off SoCal. Instrumented ranges (San Clemente Is., channel near Pt. Hueneme) exist, but those are for air-breathers and the like, not the sort of launch you're describing.

Don't know where the US typically tests/trains sea-launched ballistic missiles. The Soviets used to launch from the White Sea with impacts out in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Haven't seen a good Vandenberg high-altitude condensation trail in a long time. Some were spectacular, esp. in summer with late light. Weird blue, green, etc. trails snaking southwestward. With a Minuteman crew high-fiving up at Vandenberg, and contractors watching their screens and dials in the central Pacific.

463 I was pretty surprised to see it too I know the military is currently restricting the airspace in the ocean off LAX and that seemed to be where the launch came from so I am baffled. It did have a greenish condensation trail & was definitely multi-stage. I'm not aware of any missile range north of here only the Pacific test range that is way far west and south of here. That is usually why you will see the occasional Vandenberg launch cross over So. Cal. Maybe we have nuked Canada and no one has noticed.

472 I can tell you another good dog story, this one well before the Soybean Turd factory dog, back in the mid-70s. At that time, we had a little guy dubbed "Snoopy", some small (but not a little yappy thing) mutt of who knows what lineage.

One fine Saturday afternoon, I was a little kid playing out in the yard. My father and was out in the shop doing something, and my mother was out around doing something in the yard.

Below our house a little ways is a pretty bad, "dead man's" curve. If you know the area, it's no problem, but it will sneak up on a driver who doesn't know it. Many a drunk had wrecked there back in the 50's and 60's, with all sorts of tales. My grandmother's house was right below that curve, and she had some encounters with wrecked drunks.

Any rate, out in the yard, we all heard the sound of racing engine, and the other sounds of a car with the pedal to the medal. It got closer and around that curve comes a big 4 -door sedan, brown colored, the make I can't remember.

It wasn't even close. He tried to make the turn, but that big thing just slid, hit the ditch and did a spectacular sideways roll, turning over several times in the field, a big cloud of dust and debris forming everywhere. Hellacious racket. I remember that image (and later images of cars and trucks rolling and airborne) well.

He landed right-side up, wheels down. At that time, my father was running out there toward the wreck, yelling at me to stay put, and for my mother to call the cops/ambulance (no 911 back then). We figured that guy was hurt bad.

But, lo and behold, he jumps out of the open drivers window. The door must've been jammed. He's carrying some bag, and he high-tails into the nearby woods, running as fast as he can go. My father yells, "Hey buddy, why the hell are you running from me?"

The answer to that question was soon given, as we hear sounds of sirens way down the road from whence he came, getting closer. Two sheriff's deputy cars come around the bend, tires squealing to a halt. Several deputies jump out, guns drawn, just like some scene on a TV show.

Our running dude had just knocked over a liquor store on the other side of town, about 10 miles or so away, armed robbery, and he had come this way. Hot felony armed and dangerous pursuit. He was well ahead off them, and would've gotten away had he not wrecked.

My father points out where he ran, and they tell him to stay well back. And off they go into the woods.

Now, little Snoopy had been watching all that, and was standing next to my father during the conversation. He takes off with the deputies, gets in front, and leads them right to the guy.

They came out a few minutes later, guy in handcuffs, with little Snoopy wagging his tail and jumping all over the deputies.

That dog had never been trained for tracking or anything. But he knew they were looking and decided to lead them right to the robber.

He was stiff, the skits were as terrible as usual, and I came to realize that in the years since I've watched SNL it has become BEYOND bad. Besides simply being unfunny leftist propaganda, it was insulting and like what I imagine MSNBC to be - rife with delusional leftist theology.

I thought I was picking up on a sort of awkward tension, as they got into full-blown barking-mad leftist anti-Trumpisms, while the guy is literally right there on their show.

But I guess I have to admit I chuckled a little once or twice at seeing Trump dressed up as various odd characters, but he wasn't really very good at being them.

To go further with that wild speculation, maybe it has to do with the Russian satellites cozying up to some Intelsat satellites in a menacing fashion, of late. Hey, if the Navy can go over and piss off the Chinese, why not? That leaves the question of "What have you done with our Commander-in-Chief, and when can we throw you a party for it?"

puddle, I'm going to thank whoever reco'd it on a recent book thread on tomorrow's book thread, but The German War (so far) has a lot of little very interesting tidbits apart from its central task of illuminating the thoughts and attitudes of various actual participants on the German side vialetters and other documentation.

One of those is how the concentration camps (original ones, in Germany, "for" Germans) actually emptied out for a period, after the Nazis had essentially crushed all serious opposition. Of course by '45 several of them had morphed into death camps, though not designed as such and filled more with foreign victims than German ones.

Completely unrelated, but another fascinating bit was how widespread anglophilia among Germans (incl. many Nazis) complicated the regime's public and propaganda posture when the very nasty city-busting air war with Britain started (to German surprise) in 1940.

Posted by: rhomboid at November 08, 2015 02:18 AM (QDnY+)

495 I've actually been to Dachau. I always wondered how the villagers could deny what was happening. The camp was next to the village. You couldn't miss it. There is no way the villagers didn't know what was going on.

496 I saw a modified ICBM launch once. It was a converted MX missile with additional stages added to launch a satellite to the moon. It was a five-stage solid fuel rocket. It was launched from Wallops Island a couple years ago. Wallops Island is about 170 miles due south of me.

I watched the liftoff online, then high-tailed it out the door to watch it from my front yard. When the third stage ignited, it made a smoke ring. That was pretty cool. It was also cool to see an actual moonshot from my front yard.

puddle I think Dachau is one of the places where locals were forced by Allied troops to help clean up or otherwise deal with the camps. More to your point, in the book I referenced there is an account of children calling the buses carrying doomed German mental patients and disabled "murder wagons" as they passed through town to the local institution doing the killing. This was well before the Holocaust per se was designed or put into action.

Posted by: rhomboid at November 08, 2015 02:26 AM (QDnY+)

499 Don't know where the US typically tests/trains sea-launched ballistic missiles. The Soviets used to launch from the White Sea with impacts out in the Sea of Okhotsk.

Kwajalein Test Range, but why off LA? Nothing at SMC/AD that should require a local range with the footprint of diverting LAX. Not sure, and I would usually know.

Posted by: Jean at November 08, 2015 02:26 AM (4U131)

500 498: Probably was Dachau. The camp is practically in the village. I'm sure the locals denying they knew what was going on inside pissed our troops off royally. Those villagers are damn lucky that all our troops did to them. These were battle hardened guys at this point.

Posted by: Puddleglum@work at November 08, 2015 02:28 AM (syGA0)

501 Puddleglum: probably because it was "just" a work-camp until the last year of the war. And then suddenly it was an overcrowded work camp with lots of East Europeans and typhus.

The deliberate bad shit mostly happened out east. In the last year of the war, in the west, it was mostly accidental bad shit and panicked one-off murders.

504 That "hardest logic puzzle" (which I did not waste my time trying to figure out -- I just read the article straight through, which gives the answer) reminds me of the following anecdote:

About 10 years ago I found myself at a restaurant in Palo Alto for some kind of gathering or party -- forget what exactly. An Asian girl in her mid-20s was bragging to all and sundry about how she had gotten accepted into some engineering department grad school at Stanford because she had aced a particularly difficult logic question they posed her during a face-to-face final interview.

She then repeated the logic problem to everyone listening and asked if anyone could solve it, as she had done!

I forget the exact problem, but it had some basic similarities to the "hardest" problem above, in that one of the variables was unknown, making it particularly devilish. It involved three water jugs, one of which held (let's just say) 9 gallons, one of which held (for example) 5 gallons, and one which held an unknown number of gallons. The question was something like, "If the 9-gallon jug is completely full and the other two are empty, can you end up with exactly 2 gallons in the 5-gallon jug using only four back-and-forth 'pours' and not spilling or losing any water?"

(That wasn't the question, so don't try to figure it out -- I'm just making up something off the top of my head that sounds like the question, which I can't remember.)

Anyway, as she sat there smugly smiling to herself, no one was able to figure it out.

That is -- until I piped up with what I thought must be the answer.

So I described my answer, which she insisted was "wrong." But I noted that it produced the result she required, but she rebutted that it was "physically impossible" and sidestepped the whole point of the question.

She then revealed the real answer, which was pretty difficult and mind-boggling, but correct. That is to say also correct. Because (was I drunk? I must have been drunk) I insisted that my answer was correct as well, since it was not physically impossible, and did not violate any rules she set out, and produced the answer requested.

My solution? It involved first doing one pour, and then basically hurling the water from one of the jugs upward into the air, and while it was airborne quickly take advantage of the empty space in one of the jugs to do two different "pour measurements" that otherwise would have been impossible because there was too much water in the way. And then after they were done, finally catch all the now-falling water in the same jug. And then do the final pour.

She basically said that my answer was too Kobayashi-maru--esque, and therefore didn't count. But I retorted that perhaps the admissions committee at the engineering department have especially liked someone who could "think outside the box" like that, and even prefer my answer to the correct one she (purportedly) provided!

That pissed her off and the conversation came to an end.

I realize my anecdote would be much more effective if I could remember the exact logic problem, but margaritas do not lend themselves to long-term memory precision.

505 Another wrecked drunk on that curve story happened a little before I was born, '65 or something like that. Middle of the night, and my father hears a crash, followed by a phone call, which was my grandmother, his mother, calling him to tell him there'd been another wreck and to get down there.

This one was going in the other direction, and there was tree on that side just a ways from the ditch. The idiot, drunk, hadn't even noticed the curve apparently, just drove in a straight line off the road and hit the tree.

The front end of the car was mashed up something awful, it would've been a total I'm sure, but apparently wasn't going that terribly fast (you know, the sort of slow poking type drunk). The guy wasn't really hurt, but his face was bloody.

He was feeling no pain. My father shines the light into the open drivers window, and asks the guy is he hurt. He was sitting in there repeatedly turning the key back and forth to Start, foot patting the gas pedal. He replies, "No, but my car won't shhhtart, can you give me a booshtt, buddy?"

Dad opens the door, and says get out and you'll see why the car want "ssshtart". Well, I'll be damned, what the hell happened, he asks as he sort of falls into a puddle on the ground.

Dad keeps him occupied until the deputies get there, and they hall him off.

Back then, I don't think the DUI laws were nearly as strict, so I don't know what they did with him, along with all the other drunks who fought that curve and lost.

Hell, since the '90s, I don't think there's been hardly any wrecks on that old curve at all. While it will scare those unfamiliar, if you're driving at a reasonable speed and your reaction time isn't compromised, it's no problem.

Jean I assumed impacts were at Kwajalein, just had never known or thought about where the launches were done.

Related note, an amusing aspect of checking availability of Pyramid Cove (southern tip of San Clemente Island, USG property and no-go zone since before WWII, gunnery range/test range/SEAL training etc.) fore recrational boaters etc. are the "layers".

Going roughly and from memory, there was sea surface to 5,000 feet, surface DOWN to 100 feet under water, then another zone below that. I always made sure to tell my buddies to limit their sub-100 foot deep recreational activities when neccessary during boat trips out there ...... (you can check out the schedule at sciisland.org, unless the URL has changed).

507 OK, I just tried to find that problem on the Internet, but apparently there was an extremely simplified version featured in the climactic scene of Die Hard 3, that had only two jugs and no limit on the number of pours and no restriction on disposing of water. Since that Die Hard 3 problem is reprinted everywhere, it's impossible to find the more obscure three-jug limited-pours problem! Ugh.

508 Yeah, and I missed that missile flare in the sky tonight. Drat! I would have had a great view of it, too, if I only had bothered to look out the window at that moment. I often do (look at the evening sunset view), but tonight I was too busy cooking and didn't even look up. A missed spectacle!

Posted by: zombie at November 08, 2015 02:45 AM (jBuUi)

509 Here's one I do remember, as well as the solution. You got into a room with five bags of identical large gold coins of some denomination, and the room has one penny scale. You have one penny and thus can get one weight reading from the scale.

One of the bags is counterfeit, while the others are good. The only difference is the counterfeit coins weigh slightly more than the good ones. Say the good gold coins weigh exactly 1lb per coin, while the counterfeit coin weighs 1lb, 1oz.

Now, with only one weight operation, can you determine which sack contains the counterfeit coins?

510 Ok, general vibe I get is that the SNL was lame, but it wasn't an outright ambush, correct? I'm pleasantly surprised.

To paraphrase Churchill, Trump is the worst candidate, except for all the others, and until there's something better, anything that puffs him is good.

It also shows that he was clever/strong enough not to get screwed over by the MSM, like some naive idiot appearing on a Jon Stewart interview who later sees to his horror that it has been edited. I'm sick of Republicans getting beaten up by abusive media and just passively taking it and coming back for more.

511 495 I've actually been to Dachau. I always wondered how the villagers could deny what was happening. The camp was next to the village. You couldn't miss it. There is no way the villagers didn't know what was going on.

I've also been to Dachau. It is amazing what a pall of evil hangs over the place. I was 15 when I visited, and was going through the exhibits, when a guy in the room I was in abruptly ran outside and started puking his guts out. It's nastily haunted, like in a movie where the background music gets all screechy and discordant -- except you feel the music while your ears don't hear it. Very disturbing.

And, just to show what Americans are made of, 20 years later "Hogan's Heroes" was on network TV.

Let me be a bit more specific. Let's say I'm involved in a minor traffic accident 15 years from now and I am knocked unconscious. When I reopen my eyes, I have my choice of: (1) "Glad to have you back, Mr. Smith -- after all those years collecting Halloween candy, I'd hate to think I'd lost you!"; (2)
"OK, good -- you're going to be ok. How many fingers do you see?"; (3) [Something that sounds like English but doesn't parse, from someone you don't recognize]; (4) "You don' give me wallet, I cut you!!!!"

520 So as far as I can tell from the ocare article, big labor was always vehemently opposed to the upcoming tax built into aca, yet undoubtedly they were for the most part Obama supporters (with the exception of longshoremen), even though he's trying to screw them on this, as well as immigration. That doesn't make much sense. I guess their leadership was lobbied in some way and the average blue collar worker is as stupid as the average Rebublican voter?

Other takeaways are a) unions may do crap work, but at least they do actual work and don't appreciate being slaves on the FSA plantation. b) Democrats use these delayed shit sandwich provisions because they are betting that people are so stupid and unimaginative that they will just passively accept them once they kick in, and they won't recall who was responsible and that the whole edifice can be discarded. If we're really lucky, we'll get a Constitutional amendment forbidding the Federal government from touching healthcare -- including what is now the FDA. We'd also gain a Federal crime of advocating for Federal involvement in healthcare -- which would hopefully involve the death penalty.

But it's going to be incredibly ugly. Big Pharma is all over the TPP, for instance -- http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/218258/ -- and it's going to be very ugly when companies can sue governments for economic losses when governments determine that companies' drugs are worthless.

Iowahawk a few years ago posted an article on how CA was becoming more and more like a feudal Medieval society. You have two levels: Feudal lords in their castles (billionaire Silicon Valley CEOs), and masses of unwashed peasants in the surrounding areas that serve as serfs to the aristocracy.

I expect it's a bit subtler, with a few bourgeoisie eking out a living somewhere in between, but it seems like this is the liberal oligarchical ideal, and they've succeeded in driving out everyone else. Conservatives need a homeland, like the Israelis, before we're all like CA.

You obviously missed the entire Lois Lerner saga. "IRS determination" is a 100% indicator of a fuckjob. The IRS should determine NOTHING. They should question and challenge determinations that Congress built into laws, but they should need to litigate those challenges and, if such challenges are found baseless, eat the costs.

529 I was in Kraków a few years ago and arranged a side trip to Auschwitz. I got to Birkenau late in the day. The place is huge, and there were very few visitors.

I walked to the rear of the camp to find Crematorium IV. It was in ruins -- the SS tried to destroy it before the Russians arrived in January 1945. However, the steps leading down to the "showers" were still there, as well as the grove of birch trees where doomed women, children and old people waited for their turn to be gassed.

I had read a great deal about Auschwitz, but standing there alone in the quiet as the sun set, looking at the ruins and thinking about what happened in that place -- the old women and mothers and the kids waiting to be killed -- was a surprisingly emotional experience. That memory has never left me.

If any of you Morons ever make it to the Kraków area, don't miss the chance to see Auschwitz. It's an incredibly moving experience.

535 The Norks have supposedly miniaturized their nukes enough to fit on their latest missile, which has a theoretical range to reach the West Coast. Also, the Chinese have a new SLBM that can hit anywhere in the US if they can sneak up close to the Left Coast.

So my uneducated guess is they are testing a last chance ABM for the Nork problem, or a fast climbing ABM that can nail a chinese missile during its ascent phase, or both.

The Alaska ABMs are mainly there for a Russian land launch.

That's a great argument for your sanity.

570 I do not expect any relief from politicians anymore. The TEA Party Caving and letting ryan in as speaker put the final nail in that coffin.

The politicians are just picking the meat off a dead carcass now. I ask, how long can that go on before they run out of money to pay off the free shit army?

571 Vic. I would like to read a lot more of your links than I do. Most of them make me want to rage stroke.

Unfortunately what the news hasn't done God has. I am 40 more times likely to have a real Stroke than the average person due to a Genetic Blood Disorder that I have.

When I go, I hope it's not because of something I read.

LoL

572 The Rule of Law passed away long ago.

________

Has any candidate touched on this?

Of course Obama's policies are awful, and people are right to criticize them, but the way Obama governs is much worse. Have any of the Republicans touched on this?

Yeah, I already read the story on the IRS not notifying taxpayers when some illegal steals their SSN. Hopefully the stench from that lil ole revelation will reach all the way to the WH, but probably not.

First, we will hear that it was decided by a few low level staffers in Cincinnati, then will come the takings of the 5th followed by retirements (with full bennies), then

Nothing. We've seen this play before.

574 So, did anyone watch the YUUUUGE SNL show last nite?

How bad was it?

Posted by: Infidel at November 08, 2015 05:25 AM (nyVke)

575 "Has any candidate touched on this?"

One has. He says that breaking the law is a, get this, "an act of love"

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and unimproved. at November 08, 2015 05:27 AM (WVsWD)

576 sigh

i don't suppose any of you morons know anything about NOV TDS-11SA Top Drives and Amphion control systems

Posted by: Infidel at November 08, 2015 05:34 AM (nyVke)

578 Breaking the law is an act of love. Wow. Wow-de-dow-dow, in fact. And this guy wants to run the government.

(Do the people running the government even know what a government is? Perhaps they know all too well, and we're all the ones playing catch-up.)

Posted by: FireHorse at November 08, 2015 05:36 AM (ycg5e)

579 The government is for graft and enriching ones self.

How far we have fallen.

Posted by: Infidel at November 08, 2015 05:39 AM (nyVke)

580 Somebody long ago said it best.

"the bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy" Those in elective office hold very little real power unless they have control over bureaucrats.

The repukes have that power but refuse to use it. Justifying the "one party uni-state" accusation.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and unimproved. at November 08, 2015 05:43 AM (WVsWD)

581 I used to joke with Mrs. FireHorse that we should move to an unincorporated part of Alaska or to an uninhabited island in the Marianas and start a government. I suggested to her that this is the business to be in nowadays.

582 >> i don't suppose any of you morons know anything about NOV TDS-11SA Top Drives and Amphion control systems

Did you try giving each component a good whack? It rarely works for me, but *I* always feel happier afterwards.

Shit. I really think I may have to steel myself and lie someday, in order to join some community, like the Amish.

I have the utmost respect for them, I loathe secularism, since it is mostly toxic liberalism. The last thing I'd ever do would be to try to lead people astray or deconvert them, like some marxist "change agent". I have the knowledge to pass theologically, but I just can't believe. The stress of pretending might be too much.

Watch Gilligans Island these days and wonder why in the heck they would ever want to get off that island?

Ever think about being a cop? You could patrol the stretch of US Highway 111 -- between Firehorse and Kotyata, AK -- once I get the federal funds to build it.

Or you be Kotyata's postmaster. Either way, these'll be cushy jobs for at least 10 years.

Posted by: FireHorse at November 08, 2015 05:54 AM (ycg5e)

589 "Shit. I really think I may have to steel myself and lie someday, in order to join some community, like the Amish. "

You wouldn't have to lie at all. I would recommend that you start off with a New Order Mennonite Community first though. Think of us as Amish Lite. You would get most of the same thing as the Amish but there might be electricity and a bathroom inside the House.

Might be.

590 I actually had some lady come on one morning a few years ago and post that I had too many snarky comments with my links. My response was that she was at Ace of Spades and snark was our buisness.
