Overnight Open Thread (10-27-2015)

So I'm back. I'll fill you all in on the trip deets later but for now here's a rushed POS hastily prepared ONT. Enjoy.

Quote of the Day I

I favor cuts in defense spending-I favor cuts in spending almost everywhere-but thinking about President Eisenhower earlier today (I do that a lot) made me want to put contemporary military spending into perspective. In 1957, the nation was more or less at peace, the budget ran a small surplus, and we spent 9.8 percent of GDP on national defense. That was down sharply from the years immediately before (winding down of Korean War expenses, I guess) but quite a bit higher than it was in 1950 and 1951. In 1950, we spent only 4.9 percent of GDP on national defense, half that 1957 number. This year, we're going to spend about 3.3 percent of GDP on national defense. That's less than we spent during the first Clinton administration, a fairly peaceable time. It's less than we've spent since before the budgetary beginning of the post-9/11 era, by which I mean, since 2002. Looking at 1957 from the other side of the ledger, tax receipts were 17.2 percent of GDP. This year, taxes are expected to come in at 17.7 percent of GDP, a little bit more....

The real lesson of 1957 is that you could-if you were so inclined-spend three times what we spend on the military in GDP terms, produce a small budget surplus, and reduce total taxes. You could do that if you were willing to do the work on the rest of the budget. I wasn't around at the time, but I've heard that 1957 was not a time of stateless Mad Max anarchy and wanton savagery in the United States.

-- Kevin D. Williamson

Quote of the Day II

Those fully in the thralls of the Cult of Diversity will sacrifice any principal and tear down the integrity of any process in order to force their sociopolitical world view on those around them.

They especially show their contempt for free and open processes when they get access to the levers of power. Sometimes they use those levers in the open, sometimes they work through weak willed or compromised subordinates to do it for them.

Either way, once brought out in the light and exposed to fresh air, the intellectually stale and fetid nature of it all becomes clear to everyone around them

Thing about those Diversity Bullies, they spend so much time in a self-selecting social and intellectual bubble that they do not understand why people object to actions they see as only doing the right thing for the right reasons. They have no ability to see that their definition of what is "right" means just the opposite of what it should in a free republic.

The Cult of Diversity sometimes gets access to big levers of power, sometimes smaller ones. The mindset and process is the same.

-- CDR Salamander reflecting on the Washington state San Francisco middle school that memory-holed a student body election after the 'wrong' kind of students were elected

Quote of the Day III

Look, this isn't rocket science: if you cancel events because people threaten violence it only emboldens people to threaten violence in the future when they hear of events they don't like. If you're legitimately worried about violence, hire some security (given that SXSW doesn't pay most of their acts or, IIRC, their presenters/panelists, I imagine they can afford it). That being said, you don't need to be worried about violence. These men are cowards, Donnie. And if you start standing up to them, they will, like all cowards, go away.

-- Sonny Bunch in Dear Festivals: Quit Canceling Panels Due to Bogus Threats

Quote of the Day IV

Even as she held tightly to Islam, something was happening to Ali, thanks to her new English-language and reading skills:  She was exposed to a world of ideas that contradicted what she was learning through the Qu'ran about man's subjugation to the Qu'ran's rules and about women's subjugation to man. Dickens (especially Oliver Twist), Alcott, and even Nancy Drew exposed her to the idea of an individual with free will, one who freely makes choices for good or ill - but that are his choices.  Even Nancy Drew was an inspiration, with her lauded brave and intrepid (albeit still feminine) spirit.

Armed with this growing intellectual arsenal, Ali began to ask the "why" questions that a repressive society cannot tolerate: Why must I be treated this way? Why don't we celebrate individuality? Why do we force people to behave in a certain way when free nations achieve greater things?  Why are women subordinate to men?

The Dutch Solution to the Refugee Crisis

Convince refugees to go to Denmark instead. Okay it's a satire video from a Dutch comedy show but it does reflect the fact that European countries are totally willing to throw each other under the bus when it comes to taking in refugees but somehow just saying no collectively is not an option.

84 20% of our budget is going to defense. That is too much, no matter how you measure it!

Europe, Korea and the Middle East can go pound sand and take care of themselves. It is NOT our job.

Yes.. we can cut elsewhere.. but we spend too damned much on "defense", which is really "offense" and defense for other countries who do not contribute.
Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry

Cuts can be made ... to procurement, to cost-based accounting, and other inefficient expenditures for sure.

Overall spending doesn't really have to be cut if you wish to have the US remain the sole super-power.

Besides, how comfortable would you be to have your spending power be dependent upon a conglomerate of 2nd world socialist coward countries that routinely get knocked over by less sensitive regimes?

My sister texted me that my uncle is dying. He is the last of my parent's family generation still alive. He's 92. He started to lose the will to live a couple of years ago when his wife of 64 years died. I felt very sad this afternoon.

My brother-in -laws father is dying. He was a vigorous and very intelligent man, and now he is crapping himself and is suffering from dementia. Getting old is Hell.

Captain, I pray for the return to health of your Father, but sometimes this is the way that God has decided it. I wish it were otherwise.

sod that for a game of soldiers: since they are the miserable corksucking bastage mother forkers who make me unhappy to begin with, i'll be damned if i won't return the favor.

every day i wake up in a good mood, and look out in the back yard at all the beauty of nature.

then i look out the front window, or at the newspaper or the internet, and see the world is still full of ignorant idiots trying to either enslave me or kill me, and i lose my cherub like demeanor.

No you are not allowed to 'inflict' your true feelings on your spouse either. Share yes - but inflicting your unhappiness especially on a spouse is also morally wrong. And likely to lead to having an ex-spouse.

And no - no one is pretending that life is always happy. But that doesn't give you a license to inflict your unhappiness on others. Do you really think all the people around you who act pleasantly in daily life are all happy?

In general just having a emotion such as anger or frustration or lust doesn't give you any special permissions in society to misbehave and treat others badly. Why should unhappiness be the lone exception to this rule?

115 Captain. Prayers for you, and all in your family, too.

There's no easy time or good way to lose a parent or other loved one.

My Mom went in '78. I had to fly home on emergency leave from the USAF, got to say goodbye, then handle all the arrangements, myself. I was 19 years old.

My Dad passed in 2010. He made it to 78 yrs old, and had pre-arranged everything.

Both losses were gut-punches of epic proportions, and sucked with equal intensity.

Difference now? You n' me, brother, we've got Teh Horde. All the difference in the world, night and day, dark and light.

Hang here with us, and we'll cover every solace, condolence, cheer-up, jest, insult and other snotty remark across the spectrum, until we find that ONE RAY OF SUNSHINE that penetrates, brightens your heart, lightens your mood and in due time, lifts your spirits.

And, we're relentless. We'll fcuk with you until you smile, in spite of yourself.

It is Teh Moron Way, and we've all sworn the oath thereof.

So, fcuk you, Capt. Whitebread. We love you, and will piss you off till you believe it, too!

133 The way to reduce the defense budget is to violently adjust attitudes early, break lots of shit, and fix nothing. Properly employed, the B2s could solve a few problems without requiring a long term infrastructure investment in 'containment'.

Iran would be far less of a problem if we had burned Kharj Is. and their gas works years ago. Assad just flew to Moscow, why didn't his plane crash 'tragically' over the Black Sea. Why do we consider the narco's a criminal matter - treat them like the Israelis treat Hamas - decapitate the organizations, then promising kids don't bite people on planes. Etc. offense is cheap, defense is expensive.

156 another reason to be a grumpy bastard, at least here in my part of #Failifornia is that it keeps the "happy happy joy joy" robots with the IQ of a dead houseplant, of which we have several plethora of, away better than garlic w*rks on vampires.

often times i'm in a much better mood than i let on, but that's nobody's fing business, and i'm allergic to perky, so my demeanor is medically indicated.

my dad, bless his heart, is into the whole Prager thing, including this bullshit, and it makes being around him tiring, because, to me, it's nothing more than denial of reality.

if things suck, there's no sense in pretending they don't. if everyone would admit there's a problem, and it's making them unhappy, maybe they'd get up off their asses and w*rk at fixing things, instead of pretending modern life is wonderful.

218 @Maet

I don't think what was offered is enough.

Let's put it to the test: all you know is an unhappy marriage where your parents scream at each other, and you question the very worth of your existence. Is wearing a smile in of itself something that will sustain you through that childhood?

Put it through a murder camp, through a Stalinist purge, through a meat grinder like Iwo Jima where you face death all day long. What's left?

I need something more Real. I believe so does everyone else. And I think the answer is found with the man of sorrows. The unhappy need actual hope, not merely the Utility to everyone else of one less unhappy face.

I think that's enough philosophizing on my part for an ONT. Thanks Maet.

Prayers for all Ye Moron/Ettes with struggles.

230 I was razzing a Lib the other day about Bernie taking a neutral stance re gun ownership. Her reply was "Yes, but in Vermont they are just hunters, they don't have those semi-automatic rifles that can kill 30 people in a minute."

I tried to explain to her that gun people are gun people, and that the types of firearms that are owned by a cross section of gun people would be pretty much the same, i.e., roughly the the same proportion of rifles (semi and bolt), shotguns, and pistols.

She rejected that out of hand and said people in Vermont were not like that.

Well, gun registration statistics are hard to come by, but one number that is *not* hard to come by are the numbers for Federally registered (licence tags) issued for fully automatic guns.

So, here we go. Care to guess which state has more fully automatic weapons per capita?

Oh, say, Texas, or Vermont?

Vermont. And not by some small margin. Vermont per capita ownership of fully automatic weapons is TWICE that of Texas.

i also got an earful about my being too macho (i was in an Armored Cav unit at the time: wtf did they expect?)

252 upbeat baseball story from back when i was young and had a future.

Dad and i were up on the roof of the back house, doing something i don't recall, and we had Vin Scully on the radio while we w*rked...

Kirk Gibson came up to bat, and, when he launched it, we could hear everyone in the neighborhood erupt in a cheer... it was impressive.

on a sadder note, i went to the very last Dodger game at the end of the season when the O'Malley's announced the sale.

the Dodgers lost, and i haven't been back to Chavez Ravine since. i see pictures of it now, with all the adds and such, and it seems sacrilegious.

redc1c4, thanks for that link.

Pretty much sums up my problem with doctrine and much procurement for some time. Loss-avoidance as a priority. Teamed with the pre-existing condition of relying on technological superiority (legacy of the Cold War) above all else, this gets you ..... a shrinking Navy, and all our eggs in one very dubious basket (F-35).

Reminds me of a few days ago here, when DiT put up the post about the anniversary of Leyte Gulf, and a commenter (I think?) added the words of the Johnston's captain (or was it the Sammy B's?) before their final charge at the Japanese capital ships. In pertinent part, "we are going in harm's way and there can be no expectation of survival" (from memory here).

Pretty much the antithesis of the doctrine/attitude the blog post was lamenting.

When I moved to NY, it was a natural progression, and when I moved here, the Mets were really crappy (with their 'star' player being Dave 'King Kong' Kingman). Been to prior Yankee Stadium a few times, mostly for the history, not so much the game. Although one Friday night, I saw a Guidry-Palmer pitching duel to beat the band. I believe it was 1-0 Yankees. Back when managers let pitchers pitch.

300 297: they will all suffer the fatal NIH flaw, and, by the time every lifer in the puzzle palace and their contractor buddies get done "improving" it, we'll have the next generation LCS.

how about we take the Fletcher class design from Big Mistake 2, swap out the boilers for turbines, improve the props, add a sonar tail, a chopper hanger, a VLS and some of the new rail guns, and a Goalkeeper or two, and go from there?

301 If our design talent pool keeps shrinking and if we can't control the costs, it may someday be the best option.

As each generation of aircraft, ship, fighting vehicle, even satellites, becomes a career long effort (even two careers long, for those who transition from government careers to contractors), the contractor pool decreases, and the available talent pool decreases even more quickly.

one reason they were gotten rid of was because of the number of crew they need.

better to build some bombardment ships, with various missile loadouts, to include HARM capability, railguns, modern 155 or 203 mm ER cannons with PGM rounds, and self defense missiles auto cannons.

keep it simple, keep the crew size down and build a shit load of them, same as with the new FFGs

Gmac, interesting about the CO pot thing.

You CA folks, are we gonna have a pot thing on the ballot too? Someone told me that today. Hmm, not much drama about whether that would pass. And call me crazy, but somehow I doubt after winning, that such a law would be declared unconstitutional by an idiotic and unethical federal judge, then abandoned by the AG and governor, then finally snuffed out by SCOTUS pulling the "no standing" gambit.

Came across another former voter today. He's black, his father (lives outside CA) has chewed him out for saying he's given up on voting (grandparents' civil rights struggles, poll taxes, blah blah blah). But the father is very distraught over O'Bumbles, voted against him the second time.

Virginians took up arms to be free, not to keep slaves. We already had slaves, and in the fullness of time they would have either been manumitted and the system abolished or a slightly harsher version of the Democrats' welfare plantation would have evolved.

AOP, we're talking CA here, sort of the equivalent of "discouraged workers" who stop seeking employment and thereby fail to become part of the unemployment calculation. So it's hard to measure. Though I would think some political scientist focused on voting behavior would have been studying this phenomenon.

Short answer to your question, state-wide, is "not much difference", if we're talking about GOP voters (why would Dem voters in CA become discouraged? anything's possible, different locations/situations, etc., but generally speaking that's not something worth considering).

I'm gonna guess the "former voter" effect among CA GOP types is small, actually. Most people don't bother to learn or think about any of this stuff sufficiently to get discouraged. They might think it odd that 6 or 7 people can over-rule CA voters (2 or 3 times, I forget) to redefine marriage, but beyond that, probably not much energy wasted on the question.

And mirroring a similar problem with Congress, the gerrymandering of districts is so pronounced that what you mostly have is just a bunch of safe seats. Bales of hay or boxes of mixed tractor parts, with the appropriate party label, would be 70% likely to win election in the appropriate district. So drone GOP voters will keep electing GOPers, drone Dems will keep electing Dems, in most of the districts.

State-wide the GOP is a joke, both in terms of numbers and substance, and suffers the same pathologies it does most places (McCarthy the derailed Boehner replacement was basically a machine hack - from a red, small town/rural area that actually does havepeople identifiably American in mindset and values).

That is a good idea. I would also add: no one is eligible to run for office at any level, unless they have had 10 years steady employment with one employer, or 15 years aggregate with more than one employer. And employment in a government job adds negative years to that total.

Term limits exist already. Except for the mass creation of safe seats, it's the voters' job to limit terms that need limiting.

Post-employment restrictions on lobbying, on the other hand - now that is a great idea, constitutional, and (hilariously) already applied to low-level schmucks. I recall my dark amusement at filling out a long financial disclosure form, and also an agreement forbidding work outside govt. on any matter I was involved with while a federal hire. This was 1,000 years ago.

In the same bldg., up to very recently, the boss was clearly shaking down foreign govts. for her family foundation, while surrounded by aides on mega-buck retainers from foreign interests.

334 Prop 187, Prop 209, and Prop 8 come to mind as things that were approved, only to see the 9th Circus and others block them preemptively, usually by just a restraining order and the state then refusing to defend them to overturn the order.

Posted by: redc1c4 at October 28, 2015 02:26 AM (mOvRk)

Prop. 209, which outlawed discrimination again or preferential treatment to people based on race or sex, was actually upheld and is still operative.

There was a recent push in the Cal. Legislature strip thos protection for college admissions... but failed once parents of Asian ethnicities realized that the only way to boost Black & Hispanic numbers porportional to their percent of the population without pushing White numbers below their percent of the population was to outright deny millions of Asian kids admission on the basis of their race.

If you are going to leave, leave ASAP. It is a simple fact that it takes a goodly while to become a member of a community when you are from out of state, or even another city/town in the same state.

Just 'living' somewhere is not at all the same as becoming integrated into the community. It takes time, and sooner or later, you run out of that.

red, part of my talk with the guy today was to summarize how CA's proposition system had been, de facto, abolished by lawless federal courts and faithless state officials. He was in the Navy overseas at the time of 187, and his knees nearly buckled in despair when I reviewed that one.

Most people don't know that, as late as the 90s, there was a healthy majority of CA voters struggling to keep the train on the tracks.

Of course that CA is gone. Now the LIVs and the Coastal Clueless respond like trained mice to the borg's directions, no matter how absurd. Stem cell research institute! Bullet train! Happier chickens!

And my favorite - partly so because it stands as unwitting self-parody of CA's scientific illiteracy and Khmer Rouge control freak pathology - the Prop 65 signs everywhere ("CA knows this place to have stuff that causes cancer and bad things").

Watched that mini series And the Sea Shall Tell on youtube. I never read the book. Some loved it; others complained that the last 100 pages were of Bugliosi saying how much smarter he was than everyone else which sounds exactly like him. There are many things I admired about the man and things I did not. He seemed to have lost it towards the end. He wrote some crazy book on Bush and was appearing on talk shows. If anyone didnt agree/accept what he said he just lost it. Anyway, I thought the woman he defended was guilty.

Yes Hat, I believe the histrionically felonious Sen. Yee from Chinatown had to get aggressive against legislative shenanigans aimed at essentially affirmative action outcomes when his constituents put 1 and 1 together.

The Left in SF is devouring itself. Commercials are all over TV. It looks like the ordinance has a good chance of passing. End result: a lot of people will get real butt-hurt and there will be lawsuits.

Being more than 10 miles from the SF city limits (and keeping an eye on real estate outside CA), I can sit back and watch the fun.

I assume Drew, if not ace, will turn their attention to the breath-taking budget s**t in the House tomorrow. And the glorious re-authorization of the ExIm Bank.

Things are much worse than even most here seem to understand. The GOP, after 2010 and 2014, now reasonably calculate that there is no need to actually do almost anything sensible or constructive. The ExIm thing is a pretty nice humiliation of any actual "conservative" House members, spiking the ball in their face after scoring the touchdown, by the GOP/big donor coalition.

Even broaching the idea of a 2-yr budget deal - and, unbelievably, a 2-yr CR - takes the GOP leadership and their Beltway horse-holders far beyond mere failure or fraud territory. They're dramatically abdicating the basic constitutional duties of their offices (joining the now unrecognizable and loathsome Democrats in that respect).

Posted by: Vic-we have no party at October 28, 2015 06:56 AM (t2KH5)

386 I've been hoping to move to Colorado (from NY) within the next 8-10 months, as my company is transitioning to full "work-from-home." We'll all be able to live anywhere we want. "Portability" as our VP calls it. We're a small-ish company with specialized employees who are not easy to replace. This way, the company gets to keep valuable employees they would otherwise lose if the employees moved, they get to save on physical resources (no office rent and associated overhead) and our VP knows it will lead to a happier workforce. They commissioned a study that showed greater productivity when working from home vs. the office.

We already have 3 employees who've moved out west and served as test-subjects, and we're all working from home 2-3 days a week now. All's well and on schedule. TPTB are very fired up about this.

Why CO? Not for the weed LOL. I just love the state. The Rockies. I go camping, backpacking, hiking there wherever I can get away. We're planning on moving to Glendale Springs, rated one of America's best small towns. But this healthcare thing has me worried. Very worried. I know CO tilts Proggy in many ways, but like I said we currently live in NY so we're used to being in the minority. But CO is supposed to be a purple-ish state, not full-on Commie. Or so we thought.

2nd look at Idaho.

387 Yeah, I don't understand the whole if your unhappy your morally obligated not to infect anyone else with your unhappiness line of reasoning. Obviously no one wants to be a pill but still, if my "unhappiness" brings down your happiness why should I care? Obviously I've got other things to worry about if I'm unhappy as to whether or not your put off by my attitude. For everyone who thinks unhappy people should just walk around with a smile on their face, why shouldn't happy people likewise be morally obligated to try and make unhappy people happier?
