So I'm back. I'll fill you all in on the trip deets later but for now here's a rushed POS hastily prepared ONT. Enjoy.
I favor cuts in defense spending-I favor cuts in spending almost everywhere-but thinking about President Eisenhower earlier today (I do that a lot) made me want to put contemporary military spending into perspective. In 1957, the nation was more or less at peace, the budget ran a small surplus, and we spent 9.8 percent of GDP on national defense. That was down sharply from the years immediately before (winding down of Korean War expenses, I guess) but quite a bit higher than it was in 1950 and 1951. In 1950, we spent only 4.9 percent of GDP on national defense, half that 1957 number. This year, we're going to spend about 3.3 percent of GDP on national defense. That's less than we spent during the first Clinton administration, a fairly peaceable time. It's less than we've spent since before the budgetary beginning of the post-9/11 era, by which I mean, since 2002. Looking at 1957 from the other side of the ledger, tax receipts were 17.2 percent of GDP. This year, taxes are expected to come in at 17.7 percent of GDP, a little bit more....The real lesson of 1957 is that you could-if you were so inclined-spend three times what we spend on the military in GDP terms, produce a small budget surplus, and reduce total taxes. You could do that if you were willing to do the work on the rest of the budget. I wasn't around at the time, but I've heard that 1957 was not a time of stateless Mad Max anarchy and wanton savagery in the United States.

Look, this isn't rocket science: if you cancel events because people threaten violence it only emboldens people to threaten violence in the future when they hear of events they don't like. If you're legitimately worried about violence, hire some security (given that SXSW doesn't pay most of their acts or, IIRC, their presenters/panelists, I imagine they can afford it). That being said, you don't need to be worried about violence. These men are cowards, Donnie. And if you start standing up to them, they will, like all cowards, go away.

My dad's not doing well in his cancer fight. He refuses to eat, and he's too weak to have either chemo or radiation therapy. He might be put in a rehabilitation home, which is really upsetting my mom.
I'm frustrated because there's nothing I can do to help.

Cuts can be made ... to procurement, to cost-based accounting, and other inefficient expenditures for sure.
Overall spending doesn't really have to be cut if you wish to have the US remain the sole super-power.
Besides, how comfortable would you be to have your spending power be dependent upon a conglomerate of 2nd world socialist coward countries that routinely get knocked over by less sensitive regimes?

My sister texted me that my uncle is dying. He is the last of my parent's family generation still alive. He's 92. He started to lose the will to live a couple of years ago when his wife of 64 years died. I felt very sad this afternoon.
My brother-in -laws father is dying. He was a vigorous and very intelligent man, and now he is crapping himself and is suffering from dementia. Getting old is Hell.
Captain, I pray for the return to health of your Father, but sometimes this is the way that God has decided it. I wish it were otherwise.

No you are not allowed to 'inflict' your true feelings on your spouse either. Share yes - but inflicting your unhappiness especially on a spouse is also morally wrong. And likely to lead to having an ex-spouse.
And no - no one is pretending that life is always happy. But that doesn't give you a license to inflict your unhappiness on others. Do you really think all the people around you who act pleasantly in daily life are all happy?
In general just having a emotion such as anger or frustration or lust doesn't give you any special permissions in society to misbehave and treat others badly. Why should unhappiness be the lone exception to this rule?

My dad's not doing well in his cancer fight. He refuses to eat, and he's too weak to have either chemo or radiation therapy. He might be put in a rehabilitation home, which is really upsetting my mom.
I'm frustrated because there's nothing I can do to help.

There's no easy time or good way to lose a parent or other loved one.
My Mom went in '78. I had to fly home on emergency leave from the USAF, got to say goodbye, then handle all the arrangements, myself. I was 19 years old.
My Dad passed in 2010. He made it to 78 yrs old, and had pre-arranged everything.
Both losses were gut-punches of epic proportions, and sucked with equal intensity.
Difference now? You n' me, brother, we've got Teh Horde. All the difference in the world, night and day, dark and light.

We just left our 2 beasts to board at the vets as we start a week's vaca. Bailey the Wonder Dog is still in a cast on her right hind leg. She still got her front paws on the receptionist's desk, so she could see who all was there, people and dogs.

I tried to explain to her that gun people are gun people, and that the types of firearms that are owned by a cross section of gun people would be pretty much the same, i.e., roughly the the same proportion of rifles (semi and bolt), shotguns, and pistols.
She rejected that out of hand and said people in Vermont were not like that.
Well, gun registration statistics are hard to come by, but one number that is *not* hard to come by are the numbers for Federally registered (licence tags) issued for fully automatic guns.
So, here we go. Care to guess which state has more fully automatic weapons per capita?

Kirk Gibson came up to bat, and, when he launched it, we could hear everyone in the neighborhood erupt in a cheer... it was impressive.
on a sadder note, i went to the very last Dodger game at the end of the season when the O'Malley's announced the sale.
the Dodgers lost, and i haven't been back to Chavez Ravine since. i see pictures of it now, with all the adds and such, and it seems sacrilegious.

Reminds me of a few days ago here, when DiT put up the post about the anniversary of Leyte Gulf, and a commenter (I think?) added the words of the Johnston's captain (or was it the Sammy B's?) before their final charge at the Japanese capital ships. In pertinent part, "we are going in harm's way and there can be no expectation of survival" (from memory here).
Pretty much the antithesis of the doctrine/attitude the blog post was lamenting.

I grew up as a kid watching the Mets AAA farm team in Norfolk. When I moved to NY, it was a natural progression, and when I moved here, the Mets were really crappy (with their 'star' player being Dave 'King Kong' Kingman). Been to prior Yankee Stadium a few times, mostly for the history, not so much the game. Although one Friday night, I saw a Guidry-Palmer pitching duel to beat the band. I believe it was 1-0 Yankees. red, why not put turbines in the Iowa class and put some guns back on station? Put missile of choice where the Tomahawk box launchers used to be. There's something beyond practical advantage to a ship that can take volleys of missile hits and keep on ticking. Beauty, of a sort.
Fox2!, the decline of the industrial base as more eggs get put in fewer baskets that take much longer to build is terrible. Haven't kept up with the situation in the nuclear dept., but I know when testing was stopped back in the 90s there was real (and pretty valid) concern that it would kick off a decline in quantity and quality of the talent drawn to the specialty.

AOP, we're talking CA here, sort of the equivalent of "discouraged workers" who stop seeking employment and thereby fail to become part of the unemployment calculation. So it's hard to measure. Though I would think some political scientist focused on voting behavior would have been studying this phenomenon.
Short answer to your question, state-wide, is "not much difference", if we're talking about GOP voters (why would Dem voters in CA become discouraged? anything's possible, different locations/situations, etc., but generally speaking that's not something worth considering).
I'm gonna guess the "former voter" effect among CA GOP types is small, actually. Most people don't bother to learn or think about any of this stuff sufficiently to get discouraged. They might think it odd that 6 or 7 people can over-rule CA voters (2 or 3 times, I forget) to redefine marriage, but beyond that, probably not much energy wasted on the question.
And mirroring a similar problem with Congress, the gerrymandering of districts is so pronounced that what you mostly have is just a bunch of safe seats. Bales of hay or boxes of mixed tractor parts, with the appropriate party label, would be 70% likely to win election in the appropriate district. So drone GOP voters will keep electing GOPers, drone Dems will keep electing Dems, in most of the districts.
State-wide the GOP is a joke, both in terms of numbers and substance, and suffers the same pathologies it does most places (McCarthy the derailed Boehner replacement was basically a machine hack - from a red,small town/rural area that actually does havepeople identifiably American in mindset and values).

That is a good idea. I would also add: no one is eligible to run for office at any level, unless they have had 10 years steady employment with one employer, or 15 years aggregate with more than one employer. And employment in a government job adds negative years to that total.

Post-employment restrictions on lobbying, on the other hand - now that is a great idea, constitutional, and (hilariously) already applied to low-level schmucks. I recall my dark amusement at filling out a long financial disclosure form, and also an agreement forbidding work outside govt. on any matter I was involved with while a federal hire. This was 1,000 years ago.
In the same bldg., up to very recently, the boss was clearly shaking down foreign govts. for her family foundation, while surrounded by aides on mega-buck retainers from foreign interests.
Even many discontented people at places like this blog really have no idea just *how* bad things have become. And how quickly.

red, part of my talk with the guy today was to summarize how CA's proposition system had been, de facto, abolished by lawless federal courts and faithless state officials. He was in the Navy overseas at the time of 187, and his knees nearly buckled in despair when I reviewed that one.
Most people don't know that, as late as the 90s, there was a healthy majority of CA voters struggling to keep the train on the tracks.

Some loved it; others complained that the last 100 pages were of Bugliosi saying how much smarter he was than everyone else which sounds exactly like him. There are many things I admired about the man and things I did not. He seemed to have lost it towards the end. He wrote some crazy book on Bush and was appearing on talk shows. If anyone didnt agree/accept what he said he just lost it. Anyway, I thought the woman he defended was guilty.

Another thing that Bugliosi did that was weird was that he was hawking music compilation tapes. Remember those? They would see ads on late nite television of crappy music on tape. Not sure why he did it. It was pretty wealthy.

One thing about causing cancer, I make sure dog food or treats does not come from china. I also look to see if the package lists the company as one located in any of these asian towns around LA. They import this poison for pets.

The Left in SF is devouring itself. Commercials are all over TV. It looks like the ordinance has a good chance of passing. End result: a lot of people will get real butt-hurt and there will be lawsuits.
Being more than 10 miles from the SF city limits (and keeping an eye on real estate outside CA), I can sit back and watch the fun.

Things are much worse than even most here seem to understand. The GOP, after 2010 and 2014, now reasonably calculate that there is no need to actually do almost anything sensible or constructive. The ExIm thing is a pretty nice humiliation of any actual "conservative" House members, spiking the ball in their face after scoring the touchdown, by the GOP/big donor coalition.
Even broaching the idea of a 2-yr budget deal - and, unbelievably, a 2-yr CR - takes the GOP leadership and their Beltway horse-holders far beyond mere failure or fraud territory. They're dramatically abdicating the basic constitutional duties of their offices (joining the now unrecognizable and loathsome Democrats in that respect).

49 years ago, the hill came down on the school in Wales killing 116 kids and 28 adults. The photos of their burial is heart wrenching. They dug a long trench and put in all these little coffins for the kids. Life sucks.

I hate those info sheets they hand out on paint. If you are not eating the stuff, I see no danger. They have banned a number of paints, too, which pisses off a lot of artists. I think there is even an underground market for discontinued gouache. lol

We already have 3 employees who've moved out west and served as test-subjects, and we're all working from home 2-3 days a week now. All's well and on schedule. TPTB are very fired up about this.
Why CO? Not for the weed LOL. I just love the state. The Rockies. I go camping, backpacking, hiking there wherever I can get away. We're planning on moving to Glendale Springs, rated one of America's best small towns. But this healthcare thing has me worried. Very worried. I know CO tilts Proggy in many ways, but like I said we currently live in NY so we're used to being in the minority. But CO is supposed to be a purple-ish state, not full-on Commie. Or so we thought.
