Army Veteran Chris Mintz Charged Umpqua Shooter, Getting Shot Seven Times

Weirdly, Alex Skarlatos was supposed to be attending Umpqua Community College yesterday, but he's on Dancing With the Stars, due to his fame after having subdued the Thalys gunman in France.*

So he wasn't there.

But another hero stood up in his place.

A heroic student charged at the Oregon college shooter and was shot seven times as he tried to save his classmates, his family said.
Army veteran Chris Mintz, 30, was taken to hospital following the massacre at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning.
His cousin Derek Bourgeois told DailyMail.com that Mintz faced Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who killed at least 10 people at the school in Roseburg.
‘I was told he went after the shooter,’ Bourgeois told DailyMail.com.
‘There was no way he was going to stand around and watch something this horrific happen.’

Miraculously, all seven of the shots missed vital organs (and nerves) and he's expected to recover.

However, the hail of bullets broke both his legs.

* It should be pointed out that France has much more gun control than the US, and yet the Thalys train gunman had an assault rifle and a pistol.

I don't think this is on video, but Mintz said:

"I just hope that everyone else is OK," he told ABC News this morning.
"I'm just worried about everyone else."

My sister says her kids' middle school has recently implemented new active shooter training and it's all about staying in communication (teachers, others keeping each other apprised of the shooter's location), *moving*, and if confronted, doing things like throwing stuff -- anything -- at the shooter to get him off his game..

Like those kids in Norway in 2011. The shooter said that many of them froze in place unable to do anything and he simply walked up to them and blew their brains out without any resistance.

And, the class he picked (if I remember correctly) was Writing 115, which seems like it may be a basic, core class..maybe one that Skarlatos would be in. We know the shooter was a Muslim sympathizer.

So the fact that Skarlatos thwarted an attack by a Muslim terrorist....coincidence?

Maybe he hatched the plan ahead of time, and decided to follow through with it, with or without Skaraltos. Maybe he doesn't pay attention to entertainment news, and didn't realize Skarlatos wouldn't be in class.

He has (IMO) a great claim to say, "If I'd been allowed to have my weapon with me at the time of the incident, I might not have been wounded at all and could well have prevented others from being killed or wounded. If my kid died in the rampage, I'd certainly mention that incident in my lawsuit against the school for failing to protect my children.

in fact, it looks like the school did everything they could to make sure that a gunman could kill as many people as possible.

We really need to teach kinetics to the electorate. The rate-limiting step in a mass shooting is someone going nuts enough to do it, rather than gaining access to a weapon. Restricting access to weapons has minimal effect on the incidence of the phenomenon.

Some years ago Berkeley was overrun with feral dogs (four-legged ones), so there were arguments over what to do about it. The obvious solution was to spay female dogs, because they are rate-limiting in puppy production. Halve the number of fertile females, you halve the rate at which puppies are born.

The feminists, of course, wanted male dogs neutered, proving that they had no grasp of kinetics. Halve the number of male dogs, and you have precisely zero impact on the rate at which puppies are born. (To have a significant impact, you'd have to get virtually every male dog in town.)

These considerations are obvious in, e.g., trying to build up a cattle herd, but apparently not so obvious to some in this type of context.

Now replace "female dogs" with "nutjobs," and "male dogs" with "guns," and it's apparent that gun control will have little or no impact on the incidence of mass shootings until and unless virtually every weapon in America is confiscated. Or is that the idea? As Anita Dunn's hero famously said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

As I've said before, having lost family members to horrific preventable tragedies (in my case it was a cousin to a drug induced accident).
I understand the outrage.
It was years before I stopped wanting to elevate the war on drugs to an actual tank war (I'm not being hyperbolistic here, I wanted to drive tanks down streets and blow up known drug houses.)

This kind of loss does not make one rational. You seek to lay blame in many many places.
Eventually you learn to cope, sometimes by solemn acceptance, sometimes you do what my aunt did and simply forget everything that went wrong.

So I don't hold the dad accountable for what he's saying, I honestly think until you've been there it's not something easily understandable. I hold the media accountable for coming to him in his time of grief and giving him a bullhorn. Frankly it's cruel. They're using his response to further their agenda.

I've come to regret the policy choices I advocated for (admittedly poorly, I was young just old enough to vote) after my tragedy. It would be 1000 times worse for me when I finally came around if they had become national news in the moment and I had to live up to the interviews I would have given.

Part of the problem may be the same effect going on in the story of the Blind men and the Elephant. Likewise, looking at the news and mass entertainment, you only see a small portion of what is actually out there, and a portion that is likely as applicable to reality as 'I Love Lucy' was to real life in the 1950's.

First: Along with the GoFundMe that goes to Mintz, I would like to see a separate account for a life size bronze statue of him at the campus to instruct the public just what an actual "hero" is.

The term Hero has been so watered down lately that it hardly means anything. If you denounced a fake noose hanging from a door, you're a "hero" to the left. With this act, and through the process of funding and dedicating a statue, the public will once again learn what heroism is.

Second: I believe it is time for the networks (or at least FOX) to dedicate a special on the "21 foot rule) - made famous in the TV series Justified - so that people can learn there is a better percentage chance of living if a shooter is rushed as opposed to waiting in line to die.

I know this sounds weird, but one of my favorite elements of Star Trek was Spock and by extension the Vulcans. They're whole society was built on a tension between emotion and logic. They attempted to suppress their emotions because they were actually hyperemotional beings who almost killed off everyone on their planet due to massive wars caused by hysterics. They were only able to advance as a society once they were able to suppress these sensations and operate on a plane of absolute logic. Of course Spock was interesting because he had a human mother and a Vulcan father which set up a nice contrast between those two states of being.

I'm blathering but there really is something to the idea that relying on emotions is a disaster for society.
