OK, what does "DAO trigger" mean?

Double Action Only

The advantages are that the gun is simpler to use since the trigger always feels the same and you are less likely to shoot by mistake because the trigger pull is generally heavier than with a single action trigger.

The disadvantages are that a double action trigger pull is generally heavier than a single action trigger pull and so it takes some practice to be able to shoot it accurately.

With a pocket pistol, you are probably not going to be needing olympic shooting competition level accuracy so DAO is often chosen for simplicity of use and safety.

My mother fell and broke her hip mid-summer and has been in a rehab facility (code word: nursing home) since then. When we put her in there was the first time in my life I truly got hit over the head with the thought that she's not going to be alive forever. You would think I would know that, right? But it just honestly never occurred to me. Of course she would be here always! She's my mother!

As an aside, it turns out that one of the murdered athletes evidently was my uncle's neighbor in Herzliya. Yossi Romano, the weightlifter (may his name be for a blessing).

126 In this environmentally responsible state, we have a strong environmentally responsible, sustainable, recycling program where tens of people are employed statewide recycling beverage containers and plastic bags.

It is such an extensive program that it could even be hundreds of part time people employed in recycling, at least as part of their daily duties.

..and that is why our unemployment numbers are better than average and our landfills are not growing like an untreated cancer upon the land.

Here in Commiefornia, the marine biologists keep pointing out examples of sea creatures washed up dead with bellies full of plastic bags. Because the bags are so light relative to their size, they become easily windborne when empty and they blow out to sea. Various critters there eat them, mistaking them for prey.

Of course, this problem would go away if people would simply handle and dispose of the damn bags in a competent and responsible manner.

It's now been more than a week since Donald Trump encountered -- at what should have been a routine news conference at the Grand River Center in Dubuque, Iowa -- something the billionaire real estate developer is not used to seeing: an ego as big as his own.

The healthy self___ belongs to Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, perhaps the nation's most popular Spanish-language media figure and sometime activist.

I'm being careful not to use the "j-word." While Ramos considers himself a journalist -- apparently a weird hybrid blend of anchor, reporter, analyst and commentator -- I'm not sure, given how he conducted himself at the Iowa news conference, that the newsman can still lay claim to the title.

For one thing, Ramos trampled at least a dozen rules and customs dictating how journalists are supposed to behave. Ramos was unprofessional in his demeanor and impolite to his colleagues. He made himself the story, posed arguments rather than questions, and freely expressed his own opinions.

He also played the victim when challenged, and failed to disclose at that moment a potential conflict of interest -- that his daughter works for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Every day is terrible and bit by bit it hurts less, and one day I started wondering why it didn't hurt as much any more. I started wondering if I should be guilty for that.

Don't follow that path, you heart heals and you get on with your life. That is what life is for.

175 156 I remember when grocery stores only had paper bags.
Every time I hear some ass-hat hand me a double sided copy to "save trees" I want to explode. Through solid forest management, by PRIVATE companies, trees/wood/paper is now a renewable resource. There are far more forested acres in North America than there were in the 1800's. You know what one of our only solid exports to China is, besides manufacturing jobs? Paper and cardboard.

188 Trees? Back a few years ago there was an interesting story where the Illinois prairies were becoming forested. and the environmentalists had a fit because when they became environmentalists the Illinois prairies were prairies and if there were trees growing on the prairies then the trees had to be cut down because the Illinois prairies were supposed to be prairies and not woodland.

Such is the way environmentalists think about the environment.

200 Polymorphosly Perverse Polyamorist Polygamists

We have lots of examples of how the Language game masks realities. I've noticed "polyamory" getting traction among some young folk. So cool they are, right? Like they were the ones who invented #freelove, and not the hipsters of the 60s... or the swingers from the 20s... or the razzamatazzers of the Gay Nineties. Or Eve cheating on Adam. Goes 'way back.

Whatever label they put on it, it's promiscuity and infidelity. Behaviors guaranteed to spread diseases, likely to create bastards (Mark Levin voice: "There! I said it!"), bring heartbreak and confusion, and undermine the foundation of civilization, the home and the family.

It's not a God-centered life. Such deviant self-elevating polytheism doesn't value life, health, home, or civilization over self-interest and self-indulgence.

But it's fun fun fun 'til daddy takes the t-bird away.

201 The environmentalists also have a thing about 'invasive species', i.e. non native species that somehow become established in areas they were not known to inhabit; usually blamed on human activity.

As a result of this invasion, these non native species have to be eliminated from the area where they are overrunning native species.

Such is the way environmentalists think about Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, and it illustrates how the environmentalists think about human migration.

218 The widest impact of Plastic Bag Phobia hit several years ago, when everybody decided that grocery bags had to be "bio-degradable." This has been bad news indeed for all those who re-used them for garden produce, or worse yet, walking the dog. With the tan Kroger bags, if they sit for a while, they start to come apart, and a distressing number arrive from the store pre-holed. Hope it's worth it.

I'm of two minds on the gas-powered automatic generators. Just had to endure a high pressure sales pitch from an electrical contractor (there are no "electricians" anymore) who was here to bid a fuse-box upgrade and an outside plug for my emergency generator. He sure thinks I need the whole $10K package.

The auto kick-ins are for those ultramoderan houses where everything is computerized, and a momentary will cause your vault doors to fly open so Hans can get at your negotiable securities. All I want is not to have to string extension cords to the freezer. Well, I also need to be able to run the whole-house hi-v airhandler, since with that I can heat the place with the woodstove.

Running off a propane tank is all right, as long as you remember that WSHF the propane guy won't be delivering anymore. Sadly, same applies to gasoline and diesel. Even with rationing, you're just putting off the day of darkness.

I'm amused by those who plumb into the natural gas line and think they're "preppin." NG is pumped into those lines in cities, except for the lucky few who have a natural-pressure well nearby (Damn, Teddy Roosevelt hated those.) In a few days of mayhem, the pumps will go down, and you're just like the rest.

231 Since we are filling the blog with gun knowledge trivia, let's point out that the diameter of a .38 special, the most common revolver cartridge in the United States, is not really 0.38 inches but actually 0.357 inches and yes, that means that it is the same diameter as a .357 magnum bullet. The .357 magnum cartridge is a quarter of an inch longer than a .38 special cartridge so it can hold more gunpowder so it can send the bullet faster. A .38 special cartridge can be fired safely in a .357 magnum revolver and that is what a lot of people do most of the time because the .38 special ammunition is cheaper and there is noticeably less recoil. This does not work for 9mm and .380 though because semi auto pistols work differently than revolvers.

A 9 mm bullet is .355 inches in diameter so for practical purposes they are basically the same as .38 special and .357 magnum bullets. While the bullets are essentially the same, the cartridge cases are quite different so you generally cannot shoot 9mm or .380 ammunition from a .38 special or .357 revolver or the revolver ammunition from a 9mm or .380 pistol.

232 @188. I studied yon Earth Science when it was still Physical Geography. One of our concerns back in the early 70's was that a WPA project had planted a double row of trees across the prairies, a thousand mile line north to south, west of the river. ISTR they were hybrid poplars.

It was a deliberate attempt at climate change, and they claimed to have reduced the average wind speed at Chicago by several MPH. Silly humans thought that was a good thing. Way back then, those trees were reaching the end of their natural life cycle, and there was no plan to replace them.

I have not heard of the issue in years. Anyone else know of this? Could explain a lot, in many ways.

Don't freak out.

There may be something in the wind these days, though. So, the airlines seem to be extra cautious.

A few weeks ago I was on a flight, where they wouldn't take off until they account for two people who checked in but apparently didn't get on the flight.

I believe they even went through the luggage and took some off.

That was the last I heard about it.

So, the extra precautions are a good thing.

I think it was in the context of how McCoy was let go, and maybe some other questionable personnel moves (including bringing in Bradford, getting rid of Foles). There might even be a racial component to it, although I'm not sure how. Like I said, Evans made his points rather forcefully, and it appeared to be more based on the difference between someone like Kelly who appears to know talent, and someone like Bellicheck who appears to know how to run a team.

257 Part of the naming convention is based on if you are measuring the bullet size, the distance between the lands or the distance between the bottom of the grooves in the barrel.

Pulling out Cartridges of the World by Frank Barnes, and turning to the dimensions page for pistol cartridges I see that named 45s are from
the 45 Winchester Magnum at .451 and the .45 ACP at .452, out to the 45 Colt at .454, and the 45 Revolver (Adams, British) at .455.

Further, the various rifle 45s are as varying, the 45-70 is a .457 diameter.

Back in the olden days, natural gas was moved through pipelines by turbine/compressor sets. Some of the natural gas was burned in a turbine which would spin a compressor that would pump the gas along its merry way from the wells to your home.

Then the EPA started to require that every one of those gas turbines file a report with the EPA every year detailing how much gas it used and how much carbon it was spewing into the air to poison our planet. Getting anything wrong on those reports is a crime and could get people sent to PMITA prison. The response has been that the gas turbines have mostly been replaced with electric motors which do not require EPA reports to be filed.

So far so good. We have also been shifting our electric generating infrastructure from using coal to using natural gas from the pipelines. In the event of some kind of event that knocks out the power system, it will also knock out the natural gas delivery system in that area. The thing about pipelines is they only deliver gas to your area if the pipeline works all the way from the source to where the gas is delivered to you. The farther away you are from the source of the gas, the more likely it is that there will be something to interfere with gas being delivered to you.

So the bottom line is that when the Iranians use a couple of those nuclear weapons that Obama is giving them to set off an EMP, it is going to take a good long time before natural gas is delivered to people in the Northeast and they will spend at least one winter freezing in the dark. But, hey, gay marriage so it is all worth it.

Stranger things happened. Not to even mention the exploits of the Long Range Desert Group (and their Chevrolets!), there was a Norton Big Four sidecar rig with a powered sidecar wheel, that got excellent traction in sand as long as you were turning the right way. Outfitted with a GPMG, they could circle a tank faster than the turret could traverse. It must have been like cornering in a Porsche: fine until you lose your nerve.

There were also Gurkhas who attacked tanks with nothing but their bit-o-rag uniforms (nothing much before, and slightly less than half of that behind) and those nasty little knives. They'd pry open the hatch. Didn't always work, but, damn.

You should have a quiet word with the airline gate agent. Tell them about the guy's weird behavior and suggest they notify the flight deck crew.

Captains have the right to toss off passengers who the captain assesses could pose an issue with safe and orderly flight. Drunk and high passengers get denied boarding by captains pretty routinely.

You really see this divergence in college football.

Some successful coaches are great talent spotters and recruiters- as long as they have great recruiting years, they will have very competitive teams.

Some successful coaches can take talented but not top drawer players and still have a great team fairly consistently.

Of course, the great coaches recognize their weaknesses and have great staff that compensates for those.

NR: No Movement That Embraces Trump Can Call Itself Conservative

by Jonah Goldberg

if the conservative movement and the Republican party allow themselves to be corrupted by this flim-flammery, then so be it. My job will be harder, my career will suffer, and I'll be ideologically homeless (though hardly alone).

Thats not so scary. Conservatism began in the wilderness and maybe, like the Hebrews, it would return from it stronger and ready to rule. But I'm not leaving without a fight. If my side loses that fight, all I ask is you stop calling the Trumpian cargo cult 'conservative' and maybe stop the movement long enough for me to get off.

9/11 changed everything as far as aircraft security.

No commercial airliners will ever be taken over by a terrorist or even a group of terrorists. Prior to 9/11, the prevailing logic was that hijackers were trying to go somewhere and make a political statement, so the best thing to do was sit quietly and follow instructions.

After 9/11, everyone from teenagers to grandmothers would climb over their seats to attack anyone trying to commandeer the plane. The larger the plane, the more passengers, the farther whatever weapons the terrorist had will be shoved up their ass.

Really, there is no need for any security inspections at the airport now, except for the possibility of suicide bombers.

I would be happy to let passengers who have concealed carry permits to bring their weapons onboard.

Navy Creates Expeditionary Designator in Naming System

The decision establishes E as a new designator, similar to the L-class amphibious ships, S-class submarines, A-class auxiliaries and more. Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) will be called Expeditionary Fast Transport, or EPF; the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) will be called Expeditionary Transfer Dock, or ESD; and the Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB) variant of the MLP will be called Expeditionary Mobile Base, or ESB.

316 "But why isn't a .45 auto called a .450?

Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at September 05, 2015 09:45 AM (5buP"

Well, there really is not any standardization in the naming of cartridges. On second thought, actually there are several standards but that tends no not be the way they most people refer to them. Cartridges can be referred to with a convention that refers to the diameter of the bullet and the length of the cartridge case in millimeters. The cartridge popularly called 9mm or 9mm Parabellum is referred to as 9X19 or 9X19mm under this system. The .380 is called 9X17mm under this system because its cartridge case is 2 millimeters shorter.

There was another system used in the 19th century which referred to the bullet diameter and the number of grains of black powder that the case would hold. The .45-70 is the best known cartridge of that sort. The .32-20 was also named with that system. When black powder was the only propellant used, the number of grains used gave a pretty good estimate of the power of the cartridge. The .30-30 was named with that system at the beginning of the smokeless powder era and it actually referred to 30 grains of smokeless powder but because smokeless powder can vary by quite a bit in powder per volume, that naming convention fell out of favor.

By the way, the .45 ACP cartridge would be referred to as the 12.43X23 using the metric designation. To further confuse things, the Norwegians manufactured a copy of the 1911 Colt .45 pistol but they called the cartridges 11m/m. Don't ask me why. When the Nazis occupied Norway they took over Norway, they manufactured the pistols and I believe they called the ammunition 12mm or 12.5mm.

If this thread does not get stomped, I can next talk about the various cartridges called .380.

322 NR: No Movement That Embraces Trump Can Call Itself Conservative

by Jonah Goldberg

if the conservative movement and the Republican party allow themselves to be corrupted by this flim-flammery, then so be it.

330 You can't win a war without a Smart Naming System, but the Military needs to learn that acronyms have been superseded by hashtags. Twitter won't recognize an acronym unless a "#" is prepended. If you want your tweets organized you have to convert your acronyms to hashtags.

It appears that remedial training in social media is going to be required and that will take congressional appropriations to fund the training program.

Without remedial training, this next war will be lost because no one will be able to requisition the needed supplies, computer algorithms will fail, bureaucracies will be rendered impotent, and it will be chaos up and down the logistics chain as critical supplies are lost or misdirected.

I see no other option but unconditional surrender. Game over, man.

379 Trump's loyalty oath bothers me a lot.

The original concept of the RNC and party structure was that the people get together to combine to form the party that can coordinate to help candidates so they can get elected.

Now with the loyalty oaths, it feels like the Preeebus and the RNC thinks the candidates serve the party.

It would explain a lot on how the GOPe has been choosing candidates that the voters don't like, but don't seem to mind.

It feels like Microsoft version of politics, "you get Windows 10 and surveillance, and you will love it"

BTW - this is one of the reasons for the dirty words caution. Too many of those and some adservers flag your site, and you either lose your affiliate status or you start seeing Japanese anime porn ads.

Now, on some sites, such as Google search, if you haven't blocked the right bits and pieces, your specific activities will affect the ads you're shown instantly.

384 For all modern purposes, there is no "convention" in the naming of calibers. Too many overlapping old systems, all with their own rationale. This is interesting as hell as a historical curiosity, and a real PITA for new shooters.

I had a buddy with me, a theology student no less, on the way to the range. We stopped in at our reliable mil-surp store, a good gun-counter usually, and said "We need a couple boxes of 38." When we got to the firing line, we found they would not chamber. Who the Hell stocks ".38 Police Positive" in this day and age? Of course I should have said ".38 Smith and Wesson Special." I was wrong. There were other .38's too, in the day. Even rimfire. Be specific.

Pro-tip: never buy BB shot to shoot in a BB gun. Cannot explain this.

@269 Yes, 4-inch, double layer flex tube with fibreglas insulation in between. Not rated for "strip heat" but, with a Magic Heat exchanger in the stack, capable of keeping 3600 sq ft house warm at zero F, if you don't mind stoking every hour or so. I'm always tempted to duct the exchanger to the return duct, and I know I shouldn't. Great system though, and the only way to A/C a house with hydronic heat.

391 Trump's loyalty oath bothers me a lot.

Not me. I can see Donald Trump's Hair next to a HOT TOPLESS REDHEAD at a presser saying something like, "When I signed this pledge, I was told it meant that the GOP establishment would support my efforts. Now it seems as though they've gone back on their promise as evidenced by the recent statements by Rinse Pubis and others, etc, etc."

He'll find some way to turn it to his advantage.

394 Not stomped yet so here is a story about two cartridges named .380.

One is the better known .380 ACP (9X17mm, 9mm Kurz, 9mm Short, 9mm Corto) invented by John M.Browning and used in his Model 1910 pocket hammerless pistols. It was used mostly in blow back pistols and was not nearly as popular as the .32 auto for some reason. Today designers have used locked breech designs to make .380 caliber pistols that are as small as .25 caliber pistols a few years ago. That makes them much easier to carry and while the .380 caliber is no .44 magnum, it is significantly more powerful than a .25. Of course, that means that the recoil from such small pistols is also significantly greater but if you are expecting it and if you practice, you can get used to it and it really is not that bad.

The other cartridge known as .380 is one that the British chambered in their WW II era Enfield revolvers. The metric designation is 9X20R but the diameter of the bullet is actually 0.38 inches. It is essentially the .38 Smith and Wesson cartridge except, to comply with some treaty, they used a full metal jacket to make the bullet even less effective.

Before WW I the British had standardized on the .455 Webley cartridge which was used in their revolvers during The Great War. The British had a world wide empire and saw the wisdom of a powerful cartridge, comparable to the .45 ACP in power, for stopping various discontented native peoples before they hacked one to pieces with rude but effective bits of sharpened metal.

After WW I, the British began the descent from the world dominating titans they had once been to the pathetic blobs of mush that they are today. Part of that descent was the adoption of this cartridge. As a literary side note, the Webley-Fosberry automatic revolver carried by Miles Archer, Sam Spade's partner in "The Maltese Falcon" was chambered in .380 caliber. That revolver actually did have a safety so it would be accurate for an author to write the line "he flicked off the safety on his revolver". As a historical side note, the pistol that Lee Harvey Oswald used to kill Dallas Police Officer Tippet was originally made in that caliber for the British during WW II but after becoming surplus, the cylinder was converted to .38 special cartridges but the barrel was left as original so that the smaller .38 special bullet bounced down without engaging the rifling. Those post war conversions is one of the reasons that "snub nose revolvers" have a reputation for being inaccurate. With a barrel the right size for the bullet, a short barrel revolver can hit a man sized target at 50 yards if you can hold a good sight picture even with the short sight radius.

395 "if the conservative movement and the Republican party allow themselves to be corrupted by this flim-flammery, then so be it. "

Jonah surely must know by now that real conservatism is truly a minority in this country. I would say less than 25%.

396 Hopefully not to late to get a question in on the ammo thread.

Is there a cartridge to .44 mag as .38 spcl is to .357 mag?

.44 magnum is just not that fun to shoot.

Thank you and I'll take my answer off the air...

397 244 I was surprised to learn that Phillip Rivers was from one of my old home towns, and that I took "Physical Science" from his dad, the then assistant football coach. I can see the resemblance now that I know that.
