EMT 8/16/15 [krakatoa]

What a week it was.

High point may have been on the drive home last night. That quixotic confluence of time and seemingly inconsequential choices put me in the right place at the right time to save a young lady's dog from highway doom.

Not a bad wrap on a pretty productive week.

Here's hoping for next week to be as rewarding.

Which needs to not happen with the Fiorina get.

In the words of the immortal Buckwheat, "Here I is!"

Tough night. Body was sore from using muscles I forgot I had doing a bit of woodworking. Let me tell you about my "shop." It's the incinerator room in the basement. Naturally, no stationary tools; all power hand tools and a rickety old dining table someone tossed as the workbench. And I'm fortunate to have that.

Meh. I had fun bodging around with the router and circular saw. Still have all my digits, so that goal has been achieved.

Let the games begin!

Woodworking is great therapy. Fun, too. It does, however, help immeasurably to have the right tools, which tend to be large, heavy and most immobile.

When I had only the basic hand tools to work with, I didn't do very well. Might as well have whittled stuff with a pocket knife. But for a number of years I had a friend who had filled his garage with all the goodies Popular Mechanics used to tell you were essential: band saw, table saw, router, planer, bench grinder, etc., etc. I was amazed at what I could make!

Now, not so much.

I'd die happy if I had a Shop Smith, though....

Although, I've thought about doing some sort of YouTube show with that room as a stage. Normally the place is desolate, except of course when I'm down there and the parade of tenants and service people is endless! And the smell and noise from the trash compactor just adds to the color.

I felt the same way when I first got into my friend's shop. And, to be really honest, a project like yours would have been way beyond my skillz at that point.

But I wound up making a lot more stuff than just the strange hunks of wood we needed for a specific project. Since said friend had had a stroke, he couldn't do the stuff he wanted to do, so I built him a small decorative bridge and a lantern for his property, both in the Oriental style he and his wife liked. And a couple of similar lanterns he gave to friends.

Could I do that now? Nuh-uh. But it was find. Nowadays, I'm pretty ecstatic when I can set up a piece of furniture from Ikea.

Meanwhile, the California legislature as detail orientated as always:

The San Francisco school board bucked state law Friday, voting unanimously during an emergency meeting to give 107 students their high school diplomas even though they hadn't passed the California High School Exit Exam, a test the state stopped offering. Thousands of students across the state are in limbo, unable to take a test that is still required for graduation.

State Department of Education officials put the Exit Exam on hold while the Legislature considered a measure that would suspend the test as a graduation requirement for three years, starting with the class of 2015. The bill, however, wouldn't take effect until 2016, meaning students from the class of 2015 would have to wait until then to get a diploma.

35 Changes in Clinton Campaign
https://youtu.be/l_cC0mAsPKQ

After her wildly successful joke about her Instagram account demonstrated her stand-up chops to the world, Hillary's campaign has decided to play to that strength. Her run for the Presidency is now "the Hillarity Tour."

"I ain't no ways tarred," drawled the former First Lady with a wink. "I've got tons of material. Lots more of the 'disappearing emails' jokes. Some great commodities trading zingers. Of course, we've got binders full of bimbo humor, not to mention innuendo about Bill's bent Willy. And we're working up lots of knee-slappers about that funny night in Benghazi. I'll have them rolling in the aisles all the way to the inauguration."

Then she threw back her head and made a strange cackling sound that her advisers assured me was laughter.

My father had one. It probably looked more useful than it was, and your description is fairly accurate. What I remember most was that it could be used as a lathe, turning table legs, decorative spindles, and so on.

IIRC, it had more add-on pieces than the Apple Store has apps, so you could make it do just about anything short of generating nuclear reactions.

Meanwhile, in Libertarian theory in practice news:

The Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act isn't living up to its promise. Also known as Proposition 47, the California ballot initiative, which was approved in 2014, downgraded drug possession and many property crimes from a felony to a misdemeanor. Proponents argued that lesser punishment for low-level offenders would enhance public safety.

Prop 47 has made it easier for drug offenders to avoid mandated treatment programs. The measure reduced penalties for the theft of goods worth less than $950. Habitual offenders know that, critics say, and they've changed their habits to avoid hard time. The measure's approval also prompted the state to free some 3,700 inmates.

In San Francisco, theft from cars is up 47 percent this year over the same period in 2014. Auto theft is up by 17 percent. Robberies are up 23 percent. And aggravated assaults are up 2 percent.

Los Angeles saw a 12.7 percent increase in overall crime this year, violent offenses rose 20.6 percent, while property crime rose by 11 percent.

It makes sense if you realize that to the GOPe, success and winning aren't the same thing. Being seen as fair and open-minded and "reaching across the aisle" by the donors and the MFM will ensure getting invites to the Sunday morning shows and the best social events, and a constant stream of cash post-government-employment for whatever pols manage to get elected. What other job can you get where you can fail to do what the voters sent you there to do, and leave pretty sure of being a multi-millionaire?

But the bottom line is best served by pushing a product that merely holds the nasty things more-or-less at bay for a while. Fear of getting bitten again keeps the rubes coming back.

a knock about that, but she has an VERY odd shape about her. Posted by: Aslan's Girl at August 16, 2015 08:16 AM

I'll give here the benefit of the doubt and say it's the photograph that makes her look "creepy."

Jeb! is no dream, either. He looks like he just farted. Or is having a heart attack.

71 So Michael Sam can't cut it at football, the MFM is now all a twitter over the newest flitter.

David Denson, a minor league first baseman and outfielder in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, has become the first active player in affiliated professional baseball to reveal he is gay.

I'm sure he'll be getting a phone call from Barry.

The 20-year-old has batted .240/.355/.379 in 179 professional games.
He's what you'd probably label a fringe prospect at this point in his
development, but he's already made an impact on the game that can never
be measured.

What's that you say? He's really not that good. What does that matter. Bring him up to the majors immediately! Retire his number right now! Get him in the Hall of Fame!

73 Watched a documentary called the Two Escobars about Pablo and a soccer player who was murdered. Boy, is soccer corrupt. The player lost a game, was receiving threats, but still returned to Colombia and was out in bars and alone at 3 am in a parking lot when he was shot 5x. Why? Death wish? Escobar before he died owned a soccer team. It was good to launder money. He wd threaten all the other teams players to make sure his team would win. Anyway, Pablo died before this other pablo was murdered. As documentaries go it was too long bc of too many soccer clips and it was too sympathetic to escobars family. Now, they've re-invented themselves. Then they were screaming how unfair it was to be hunted by the police.

76 Power tools: My uncle inherited his father's big, heavy, stationary power tools. Most were from the early 1900's. The table planer was more recent.

When my aunt, his widow, decided to sell them, I had no place for them. I connect her to my best friend and he bought them for a song. Most had to be rewired eventually, but he still has them.

From time to time, he will tell me about something he used them for. So I get to play with them vicariously.

78 What i forgot to say last night in ont, as i tried to explain what actual, true loyalty to ace,

Is that in this whole Jeb State controversy, this has resulted in jeb state going from an average of 11 comments to 4 comments, one of which psycho moderator bill s is waiting to ban.

Even before this issue, i always didn't like jeb state's treatment of their commenters. Why there's only three.

This blog is worth 100 times jeb state.

79 Meanwhile, in Libertarian theory in practice news:

Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!

Yeah, the problem with drug offenders is the same problem with child molesters.

They like what they are doing. It gives them pleasure.

So, by reducing the penalties and downside to their behaviors-

you're simply encouraging it.

Good job Progtards!

That there is some mighty fine thinking.

80 The San Francisco school board bucked state law Friday, voting
unanimously during an emergency meeting to give 107 students their high
school diplomas even though they hadn't passed the California High
School Exit Exam, a test the state stopped offering.

Why test at all any more. I'm sure that testing is racist, sexist, Islamophobic, homophobic etc. Just hand out diplomas like they do welfare.

-George Will, Fox News Sunday

George, your an ass!

George Will is becoming a joke. Last week Gateway Pundit had a quote of him calling Trump supporters trash, the week before he said Trump supporters will have to return to the GOP on the GOPe conditions, and now, after paving the way for Iran to get the bomb, he is worried about Trump being in charge? At least with Trump we would not have to be worried that the U.S. would drop a bomb on America. With Jarrett in charge we might be her targets.
