I thought I was pithy last thread but I happened to post at the moment when someone who is unaware that a prominent journalist is also the son of one of the most prominent journalists of the last century and turned it into a Talmudic debate.

So...

Trump was a Bhuddist monk in Saigon dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself on fire in the public square.

35 Russian Sunset (or what half the horde had for breakfast)

2 oz vodka (or 6oz YMMV)
2 oz triple sec
4 oz sweet and sour mix
1 dash grenadine syrup

Mix vodka, triple sec, and sour mix in a shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled collins glass, add a dash of grenadine to the top, and swirl slightly. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice if desired, and serve.

85 The river takes its current name from the Russian Ivan Aleksandrovich Kuskov of the Russian-American Company, who explored the river in the early 19th century and established the Fort Ross colony 10 mi (16 km) northwest of its mouth. They called it the Slavyanka River, meaning 'Slav River.' The Russians established three ranches near Fort Ross, one of which - the Kostromitinov Ranch - was along the Russian River near the mouth of Willow Creek. The redwoods that lined its banks drew loggers to the river in the late 19th century.

The best "debate" I've seen in years was the Rick Warren ones where he sat down with Obama and McCain (separately) and spent 1+ hours (I forget the length) and asked the same insightful, interesting questions.

Asking gotcha questions may demonstrate how a candidate thinks on their feet, but they can have these types of moments every other day on the campaign trail and in interviews. We need debates, and a more serious media, to engage in discussions of the issues, the candidate values, with enough time given for their response (like a job interview) to get a complete answer (not a news teaser sound bite).

*sigh*

Yeah, you do and I do, but LIVs don't.

I'm not a Fiorina fan, really - I saw what happened at HP, and even beyond that she has no political experience whatsoever. It's easy to say conservative things, it's much harder to govern conservatively. I think she's good for the field, and makes an excellent foil to Hillary!.

But in that "foil to Hillary!" role, she has to be careful to come across as factual. Her statements must be unimpeachable. They're going to get twisted anyway, but if she's solid about making statements backed by fact, she can always do what she did to Matthews - "No, that's not what I said. That's what *you* said."

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - Derringer Bandit at August 07, 2015 10:09 AM (kff5f)

192 For those worried about Carly's tenure at HP, remember it's always better to look at all the things she did rather than one job. HP was in really bad shape when she took over (it's still only in OK shape), and she was criticized for everything she did by Silicon Valley types. HP has a lot of alumni among the Valley establishment and, once many of those folks became rich and entrepreneurial, they all had opinions on "How To Fix HP". In other words she got crap for everything she did, including how she set up her office. No joke.

Buying Compaq May or may not have been the greatest decision (and it has defenders and attackers) but no one would say she wasn't decisive. And HP still stands today, so some of what she did obviously worked out pretty well.

Yeah, I know that's the thing people like about her. She's good at it. Honestly, she had Trump on the ropes, and if he were anybody other than Trump, and if his candidacy was anything other than a well-timed protest vote against the Gope, I would say she scored a knockout.

But it's not, and she didn't, and all she did was cost her what little credibility she might have with people who are fed up with the Gope, and are casting a crooked eye in Faux Nooz's direction, regarding whether they are anything other than a shill for Gope.

196 Way down upon the Swanee River, Far, far away, There's where my heart is turning ever, There's where the old folks stay. All the world is sad and dreary, Ev'ry where I roam, Oh, darkies how my heart grows weary Far from the old folks at home. All up and down the whole creation, sadly I roam, Still longing for the old plantation, And for the folks at home. All 'round the little farm I wandered when I was young, Than many happy days I squander'd, Many the songs I sung. When I was playing with my brudder, Happy was I, Oh, take me to my kind old mother, There let me live and die. One little hut among the bushes, One that I love, Still sadly to my mem'ry rushes, No matter where I rove. When shall I see the bees a-humming All round the comb? When shall I hear the banjo strumming Down in my good old home?

I'm not a Fiorina fan, really - I saw what happened at HP, and even
beyond that she has no political experience whatsoever. It's easy to
say conservative things, it's much harder to govern conservatively. I
think she's good for the field, and makes an excellent foil to Hillary!.

But in that "foil to Hillary!" role, she has to be careful to come
across as factual. Her statements must be unimpeachable. They're going
to get twisted anyway, but if she's solid about making statements
backed by fact, she can always do what she did to Matthews - "No, that's
not what I said. That's what *you* said."

Which is why the "debate" format is so effective at weeding out the outsiders. Cruz last night, before a commercial break says "can I say something?" The response: "No, we're going to commercial."

When they came back, where was Cruz? How is it he was not ready to beat everybody on that panel with his microphone? He didn't, because in the end, he's a politician too.

And in that format, politicians have a role, they are bit players on the stage. Which demonstrates to anyone watching, the outsidey outsiders aren't going to do squat to change anything.

Sometimes there are no good choices, and you have to pick the least bad one. I can live with that, in fact, it's refreshing when you compare that kind of leadership to a typical DC pol, who never makes a hard call because, hell, we'll just raise taxes and the debt.

When liberals castigate Carly for making the hard decisions regarding payroll, the progressive intelligentsia are comparing the business of government with private enterprise.

Government never reduces its workforce because it can rely on confiscating more money from taxpayers to fill the void, whereas private business must make decisions around its financial strength and projected earnings.

Its a convoluted comparison, but when dealing with liberal/Marxist, expect the worst and you will not be disappointed.
