A Brief Independence Day Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]

Thinking this day...

No matter how bad it gets, I will take this country over any other, any day of the week.

You. Can't. Make. Me. Go.

What luxurious lives we lead that we have time to bitch and moan rather than fight and claw our way to meet even Maslow's lowest tiers of needs. So many around the world are lucky to survive the day and, here, in America, we have to plan for our long lives beyond our working years.

Each day, we awake and decide to get out of bed, or not.

We eat what we want, or nothing at all.

We travel to a job that we have chosen for ourselves.

And, despite the enormous infringement upon our earnings due to taxes, we are still allowed to do the aforementioned in more comfort than almost any peoples in history.

We are truly Blessed.

So, do you feel the same? Is there any other country for which, given the means, you would abandon the U.S.?

How do you plan to celebrate our independence? Is there a treasured tradition you follow or do you engage in the most American of activities, which is to say, exercising your God-given right to lay flat on your ass, drinking beers, and watching sports?

Me, I'll watch '1776', again, and then fight the urge for the rest of the day to shout "For God's sake John (Boehner), sit down!"

Whatever you may do, may you be Blessed with a bounty of family, friends, and free exercise of your God-given rights.

5 Well, I just posted this on the dying thread, but since it's a slow holiday weekend I'm going to re-post it. Because I can.

After the liberation of Rome in 1944 my Dad's unit was pulled from the line for rest and refit. Written in his diary while in bivouac along the coast of Italy near Rome on this day in 1944:

The EZ Dog Diaries

July 4, 1944
"Independence Day"! No great celebrations like we have in the States - In fact outside a few inebriated souls there was very little indication of any thing out of the ordinary. The report has it that every American artillery piece now in use against the Krauts was fired at noon as sort of a demonstration for liberty.
Another trip to Salerno today. This time to look over a Shore Fire Control Party school being conducted by Seventh Army. I'll probably be spending quite a bit of time down there, because the General seems pretty concerned with it.
News from the Russian front really sounds good. All those "tsk" towns have fallen - Pinsk, Minsk, Polotsk, etc - and in the ten days since the drive started the Red troops are 1/4 of the way to Berlin.

32 I was thinking this week that for the first time in my life, I'm starting to dislike my country. It's not what Obama's doing to us, and it's not what the Supreme Court is doing to us. Those things wouldn't matter if we had an electorate that gave a damn about preserving our freedoms. But here we are with the lowest workforce participation rate since 77, and people are okay with that because our president is "cool." Our Supreme Court has told us the government has the constitutional power to force us to buy something we don't want or need under penalty of law -- and people are okay with that because subsidies. I don't know that I recognize this country anymore.

And yet. And yet.

Sometimes you love something not because it's perfect or because it lives up to your ideals, but because it's yours. Sometimes you love something because for all its faults, it beats the absolute hell out of the alternatives. And this country still does.

In the U.K., not only are guns banned, but you're not allowed to defend yourself with any sort of deadly force when attacked. In France, radical Muslim terrorists shoot up kosher delis. In Germany they speak German. In Canada you can be hauled in front of a "hate speech" tribunal and in Mexico you'd be lucky to survive the drug cartels.

This country is mine, goddamn it. Maybe she's not the country I grew up in, or my parents loved. But she's still a million times better than what could be. I won't give up on her yet.

41 NDH, you seem to be conflating pragmatism with idealism. You list as a basis for belief in this country's greatness things that may or may not persist, and in fact are being actively eroded. We must distinguish between the ideals this country was founded on and the good people who believe in them on the one hand, and the country as a whole, such as it is now, on the other. My loyalty is to the former, not necessarily to the latter, when it degenerates past a certain point.

It's how the progressives began their march and it's how we can begin ours.

The baker in Oregon or the photographer in AZ? Their problems began on the local level.
The Federal gov. cannot change every local court case, or stop every local thing that happens that they don't like. And yet, we keep allowing local infringement of our rights to occur, thinking in the back of our mind that the Fed. courts or our Fed. legislatures will stop it.

Stop allowing things to happen on a local level. Get involved.

leadership of the free world was thrust upon us two centuries ago in

That is a question that I have been thinking about a lot lately. I suppose if you have the means, any place is nice. I have heard that journalists hate being sent to Chile. Their goal in serving overseas is to be where they can report on bloodshed, death, unrest and disaster. There does not seem to be much of that in Chile except for the occasional earthquake.

That tells me two things. First that journalists are amoral parasites but you knew that already. Second that Chile seems like a pretty good place to live. It will be necessary to learn Spanish but that is going to be necessary in any case.

71 Nice post, Nied.

Boiled down to simplest terms, I think American society is generally broken down between those who appreciate the opportunities our society afford, along with the sacrifices made to acquire those opportunities, and those who do not. This appreciation, or lack of it, defines the conservative/liberal schism in the U.S.

I do worry about the days to come. And I am utterly stunned at how fast our society has declined in the past few years that Obama has been in office. I worry about what this means for my kids. The one thought that I am comforted by is, if history is any guide, that our so-called "betters" will get theirs in the end.

80 Personally, I've taken a small measure of encouragement from some anecdotal observations in the past few days. I'm hearing some grumbling from sources that I normally would not expect it from : LIV-type family, friends and acquaintances. I'm hearing a "this crap is going a bit too far", particularly regarding that ridiculous and totally inappropriate rainbow lightshow at the White House last week. I've also heard some dissatisfaction with the over-the-top hysteria on display re. the CFB. Probably won't amount to much, but it was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, as we all know, the LIV crowd is shiny object-oriented, and I suspect this is a glitch on the PC radar. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Personally, I would move to Poland if given the chance. Yes, it is less free or wealthy than the US, but I would at least be among my peeps. That's a major improvement in comparison to being estranged in one's own country and little more than a taxable unit to the leviathan.

I was fortunate to live there two years. If the shite comes down here, that is where I would go as well. Those people know struggle, and know how to deal with tyranny. I appreciate the heck out of them.

Plus, their president, when elected, resigns from his party, so that he can be president of ALL Poles. It's symbolic, I know, but at least they give lip service to it. Unlike the grudge holding jerk who thinks we are more of an enemy than Iran or terrorists.

91 You may have seen yesterday's report of the Bikers and former Soldiers, stepping in to defend the flag in N.Y.C.'s Central Park?

Slapped a couple of hippies around, and sent them fleeing. The NYPD, (at whom the "Disarm the Cops" hippies were aiming their flag-burning protest), had to step in to "protect" said hippies.

Hipster Irony, how beautifully defined!

Now, that's what I'd call a good 4th of July celebration.

Freedom, fireworks and slapping some smarmy hippy right back down to their rightful place as the beta bitches of the Free World.

Anyway, I've got to get to downtown Houston, rather early, now. There's a major fireworks show down there, as well as a Garth Brooks concert at the Toyota Center. Got tickets to the concert.

Yeah, Brooks is a simpering Obummer voter, but like any other true performance legend, one does want to take in the show at least once, before they're an over the hill Paul McCartney, still croaking out broken voiced discordant "tunes" well into his dotage.

The course correction isn't going to happen anytime soon, nor will it until political correctness and liberalism/progressivism is crushed. To that extent, I think the best thing you can do is become involved in your local public school administration as an advocate for conservative principles and coursework. We didn't get here by accident, and it aint called the long march for nothing. And you can refuse to quit fighting; challenge your representatives publicly, candidly and relentlessly. Make them answer for their behavior. Take note of which companies and institutions promote and promulgate that crap and shop elsewhere.

At least that way, if it all goes to shit you did what you could within the constraints of the system and you'll have a clear conscience when push comes to shove.

It wasn't in the original script. It came from the technical advisor on muzzle-loaders.
With those weapons in particular, you need to focus on a detail, like a button or a buckle. If you miss that particular target, you might still hit the larger target.
So maybe a translation might be "Aim narrowly, and if you miss, you won't miss by much."

________

Life your life. Hold ideals, and live them, too; teach others by your example. Associate with people who have ideals and strive to live them, even if their ideals differ from yours. Accept ahead of time that you won't get your way most of the time.

I've long thought this to be the way of the Right - while those on the Left are always going on about "making a difference." (Here's a little secret about the Left: While they're telling you what you should do, they live their lives which are pretty much the same as the life you seek to lead without their interference.) But such preaching is common because it's cheap. Tune them out - and, of course, refrain from telling others what they should do.

Beyond that, if you really want to effect change, it'll take a lot of money.

112 Nice post, NDH. I appreciate the positive comments, too. Last night I seconded a suggestion that irongrampa be given a guest post today. That was a great idea.

I'm not feeling it myself, though. I am completely depressed and demoralized. I just left the following comment at Neo-Neocon:

***

I've been saying for a long time that government is just a form of organized crime.

The Founders created the Constitution and the Rule of Law in an attempt to rein in the worst excesses of human arrogance and greed, and to try to keep it under some kind of control. Both schoolchildren and immigrants were taught that.

Today we are told that we should disregard all of their work because they were nothing but a bunch of rich white slaveowners. Both schoolchildren and immigrants are being taught that now.

So, it looks like it's going to be the Law of the Jungle from now on. The criminals are in complete control and lord it over us. They are increasingly brazen about their criminality because they know there will be no consequences.

There are absolutely no grounds for optimism. Happy Fourth.
