The Office of Personnel Management database penetrated by Chinese hackers didn't use encryption or other technology to protect the Social Security numbers of federal workers, despite such measures being industry best practice.

The massive data breach there affected the records of 4.1 million current and former federal employees and may be linked to a Chinese state-backed hacker group.

13 Just read about how Hawaii's Obamacare Exchange has failed after wasting huge amounts of cash for a system that never had a tenth of the people needed to sign up for it to be viable.

This is common for Obastardcare. When the SCOTUS votes that the subsidies are illegal for the rest of the states, they'll collapse as well. I'd like to punch every damned fool that voted for Obama right in the face with a set of brass knucks.

The lying scumbag promised everyone a 2500 dollar drop in costs while planning to add a lot more sick people to the system along with no extra medical resources. There was no way that this system could EVER have worked, but the bastard son of a whore got elected twice despite such incredibly blatant dishonesty.

I truly despise and loathe the people who voted for this man simply for their unfathomable stupidity. When WILL these stupid bastards learn there is no such thing as a free lunch?

What Obama actually initially claimed during public appearances was that premiums for the average family would go down by "2500 percent".

Not making this up.

Fuckin' math. How does it work?

Of course, in a country where a majority of adult voters are mathematically illiterate to a pathetic degree, idiot politicians can spout such nonsense in perfect safety. Hey, 2500 percentamawhatsits? Sounds good! This guy obviously cares about me and my family! Oh look, the Kardashians are on next!

Even if by some miracle, SCOTUS decides to actually do the right thing, the GOP-e will be eager and ready to save the day.

Posted by: CDR M at June 07, 2015 07:34 AM (TWXpK)

31 "So the only thing the Chinese hackers haven't gotten are Obama's college transcripts?"

It can be assumed that the transcripts were already long since stored down the same memory hole where the test scores, the law firm records, the Rashid Khalidi dinner tape, the DNA test, the failed drafts of the autobiography, the membership card for "Man's Country", and the original paper birth certificate had all already been safely tucked away.

No, what the Chinese hackers got was actually better than all of that stuff combined, because even if they had gotten every last scrap of that, it would provide them leverage for (as Sefton neatly points out) under 600 days at this point.

Obama is a prominent but temporary part of the federal government. Eight years. There are many many many people holding official positions in the federal government who are permanent rather than prominent. They remain in This Town for most or all of their adult working lives.

The general public doesn't know the names of these legions of Fedzilla apparatchiks, but the Chinese know their names now. Along with a huge amount of sensitive information about them, down to drug use, extramarital affairs, financial overextension, publicly undisclosed prior criminal activity, and other such high-quality blackmail fodder.

39 The real gold mine in OCare is in the administrative costs -- Estimated by the OMB to run at least $273 billion over 10 years. So the leech swells, and patient loses moar blood.

But hey, if you like your doctor you can get fcuked.

Oh, and Medicaid sign-ups are running waaaaay above projections, so when the states (that chose to go the expanded route) have to start coughing up their 5% of the expanded costs in 2017 it will blow a new hole in their budgets. That share of costs rises to 10% by 2020.

For the state of Florida alone, one decade of expanded costs will run them $5 billion. This analysis is what led the gubner, Rick Scott, to change his mind about joining the expansion crowd.

But here's the real scary part -- If it would cost FL $5 billion, then it must cost the feds (and thus, us) over $50 billion for just that ONE STATE in the next decade.

Enjoy your morning coffee.

Morrrrrrrrning, Glorrrrries!!!! I feel growly.

Stop me if you've heard this one. Last time I'll tell it.

Went to Mom's yesterday, and she insists we put on the horse race. (Her grandkids have got her a nice big-screen TV.) Hours sitting around, chatting enjoyably, but bored watching the yakking heads, the early race, more talking heads, clips from past races, on and on and on. When's the big race start?

Finally, the big race is on. And they're racing around the track. Annnd... Just as they're coming around the last bend, Mom's hand accidentally brushes the remote control and hits mute. Swiftly fumbling to un-mute, she changes the channel. Only moments to get it back, but moments too many.

Hours of waiting, only to miss the big finish? Priceless.

I love my mom. She can laugh at herself. I should be doing so good (or even alive) at 95.

On with the day...

61 Obama aims to mend US-German relations on Bavarian trip

Mend the relations? Why, I thought that the US was more respected all around the world since King Barry was crowned. Why would he need to mend our relationship with Germany?

"I have to admit that I forgot to bring my lederhosen but I'm going to
see if I can buy some while I'm here," Obama joked. He said when he

G-d bless her. I miss my folks.

Her little mishap reminds me of a story. Years ago, NYU Film School used to have screenings of former students' thesis films.

One I distinctly recall was Marty Brest's (he directed such films as "Midnight Run"). A hapless photographer is befriended by a wicked schemer and the two plan a stunt to get the former a Pulitzer Prize, fame and fortune. They will blow up the Statue of Liberty and at the precise moment, our "hero" will snap the photo. They row out to the middle of New York Bay, and just as the crooks push the plunger, they knock over the tripod and miss the shot.

The actor who played the crook was an unknown, weird looking homunculus - Danny Devito.

77 "Obama aims to mend US-German relations on Bavarian trip"

Oh. Yeah. About that.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to anyone in the Obama administration that Angela Merkel grew up in EAST FREAKING GERMANY.

Where every individual in the GDR knew that that the Stasi were always attempting to listen in on even their most private conversations, and were diligently building files on what the officers of the Stasi presumed were their innermost thoughts.

East Germans, especially the young, hence developed an utter loathing of this total lack of personal privacy. (See the film _The Lives Of Others_ for an illustration.) Surveillance mania was the most hated feature of a hated regime.

So what do the Obama crew decide to do? Wiretap Merkel.

No. No. No. No. No. Nononononononononono. Nooooooooooo. What part of "no" was not clearly understood? ***NO***.

That's not a minor faux pas. That's not some slight difference of opinion that can be casually papered over. It's a huge and lasting blow to relations between Washington and Berlin.

This is what happens when you have a President who thinks it's a good idea to elevate former campaign van drivers to executive positions on the National Security Council. Utter and catastrophic policy incoherence. Amateur hour writ large.

Seems to me the "one-and-a-half-turns" rule applied to almost all carburetors in the Good Old Days. I was taught that rule during my first engine rebuild -- it had a Carter carb. -- and gave good results when I moved on to others (Rochester, SU, Solex and Weber).

Obviously, each one needed to be tweaked while running, but the initial adjustment at least resulted in a sort-of idle.

95 83 Back in the Marvel/Tillotson days of The Miracle of Carburetion, it was a truism that the mixture screw controlled air, and the standard setup was one-and-a-half turns out from fully closed. This is a starting point of course. Many little variables affect where the engine actually "wants" it to be, which was the miracle part.

Many little carburetters, especially the ones with cute little velocity horns, got turned into hash pipes. Back in the day.

Okay, that's useful. I got the carb adjustment tool for chainsaws that Poulan apparently doesn't want their customers to have (WTF?) so I'll have a look at it. Damn thing is barely a year old and when I go to grab the trigger it revs up and conks out. Annoying.

When I first worked in Germany back in the late '80s, I used "Gruess Gott" as a greeting when I met a couple of friends from Frankfurt. One of them, with a typical Germanic curl to his lip, advised me that it made me "sound like a Bavarian," which is their rough equivalent of sounding like a one-eyed, hydrocephalic inbreed from from Appalchia.

Never again....

Ethanol-infiltrated fuel is a hideous curse from beyond the grave to any small carbureted engine. In addition to its many other (cough) _fine qualities_ (cough).

I recommend that you:

(a) Buy an electric chainsaw. These used to be a joke, but stronger electric motors have gotten them to where they can do pretty substantial jobs. No fuel system to clog up with ethanol goo.

(b) Do not ever vote for any candidate who comes first in the corn-state caucuses. Whoring for ethanol fuel mandates being strictly required to accomplish such a feat.

India intends to fuel an economic revival on coal, the world is almost assured of reaching a tipping point beyond 4 degrees C and probably much higher...

If the science is so damn settled, why would they say the world is "almost" assured? Shouldn't it be "definitely" assured?

And if the models are so damn precise that we have to believe them why would you say "4 degrees and probably much higher?" Probably? How much higher? Oh, you don't know? Whose ass did they pull that tipping point out of?

Never mind whether the science is settled. The basic logic most definitely isn't settled.
