Tuesday Morning Open Thread

It's Primary Election day here in Pennsylvania. If you are a Pennsylvania resident, be sure to go out and cast your ballot today.

I'll be doing some volunteering at the polls, so I don't have time to put together a news dump.

5 Good morning! Does anybody know of a website that contains information about Pennsylvania judges? There are three races for the Supreme Court, and I don't know anything about these people.

I have to go to work, but I'll peek in here from time to time. Otherwise I'll just have to vote for the official Republican endorsed candidates. I'd prefer to know something about who I'm voting for.

Apparently not Boris Yellen at the Fed.

I'm a longstanding dollar bear, but right now, although the USA is a terrible economic mess, so is the rest of the world. Badly enough so that corrupt, uncompetitive, farked-up America with Obamanomics looks like a safe haven by comparison.

I doubt that happy situation will last, but I don't see a greenback implosion in the cards in the near term. In the longer term? The buck is a goner.

30 From Ricochet's morning dump (Daily Shot):

The Supreme Court issued a ruling on Monday in the case of Treasury of Maryland v. Wynne. In most states, taxpayers are given a deduction for income taxes paid on out-of-state earnings so as to avoid double taxation. While Maryland employs that practice for its basic state income tax, it hasn't allowed it for so-called "piggyback taxes" that the state collects and then distributes to Maryland counties and to the city of Baltimore.

Maryland is one mile wide at its narrowest, borders four other states (West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware), as well as the District of Columbia, and is within spitting distance (less than 20 miles, but a three-hour drive because of traffic) of New Jersey. So, aside from being ridiculously unfair, this policy has also impacted a lot of people.

The court decided 5 - 4, to strike down the income tax law. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said that the law has the same economic effect as a state tariff, "the quintessential evil targeted by the dormant Commerce Clause."

I just signed up for Ricochet yesterday. I'll let you guys know if it's worth the 40 bucks.

31 Venezuela is holding national primary elections.

"Some candidates in Sunday's primaries are still jailed on charges related to last year's protests, including Daniel Ceballos, the former mayor of the restive city of San Cristobal. In a quirk of Venezuelan law, a win in the general election could spring the 31-year-old politician from jail because legislators receive immunity from prosecution during their terms.

Maduro, whose popularity has hovered in the 20 percent range for months, has repeatedly boasted that his United Socialist Party of Venezuela will clobber the opposition at the polls."

Do
you intend to play nice? I'm a big fan of redemption, and certain
characteristics of your posting have been similar to folks who were
recently banned -- that doesn't mean that you are that recently-banned
person or that you deserve to be banned in any way shape or form -- or
that I have any power to ban you......but if there were a three-factor
banning, I may have spotted one -- which I might know about 'cause I've

But I'm really not in the banning business

redemption, because people are flawed.

.The F-35 is what happens when they try to design an airplane that is all things to everyone. Fighter, bomber, ground attack aircraft, long range interceptor, stealth night fighter, etc. One single airframe can't be made to excel at all of these roles, it simply isn't physically possible, so it winds up sucking at everything.

Considering many deaths are sudden and natural, as in heart attacks or the result of fast acting disease, the actual proportion of elderly deaths that is euthanasia must be preposterously large.

So if Ajax has a bad game do the numbers spike? People must just eye their older relatives in simmering anger, just waiting for the right moment.

Makes sense. It were kinda Twilight Zone. One was where everybody lived a serf-like existence and this girl went on a reality/talent show to get out of that, failed, then was commanded to perform degrading things for video in order not to be sent back to that....

Seems almost visible on the horizon, doesn't it?

93 Credentialing: Saturday night closed our local symphony season, and it was a big 'un, Mahler No. 7. I know there are a lot of Mahler fans here, so I won't have to remind you that there is a lame-ass ("European") mandolin solo in there, and just a hint, off in the distance of the mountain passes, of...cowbell. Not the only symphonic appearance of cowbell, but one of the prominent ones.

It's long, and it was good. So at the end, there is some general cheering and such, and I had to do it. "More cowbell!" I intoned. And people around me, my age and younger, had No Effin Idea what that even meant. Just one guy, actually older, more or less got it and gave me an indulgent grin. I immediately regretted not having the generational chutzpah [we ay "balls"] to have yelled it during the actual playing, which would have been Epic, but Wrong.

So I says to him, after about 82 minutes of Mahler eviscerating his inner notions right there on our stage, "Want to get lynched?" He appeared quizzical. And I yelled "Play it again!" And we left laughing.

136 Poison Ivy? (trigger warning: old phart's ramble follows)

Twenty years back, when we moved to the old family ranch, I started clearing long-neglected trees and fences of a multitude of strangling vines. Despite long sleeves and caution, I ended up with the horror of my youth, poison ivy rash, all down my left forearm. Itching, running, spreading fast, just as bad as it ever had in my woodsier early years, when I could end up bed-ridden for days. Yes, Mom slathered us with that useless pink paste and we were told "don't scratch." Ahhhgggg.

Milady and I had been trying homeopathy out for a while, with surprising success (especially under our homeopathic MD back in Chicago). I took this as a chance for experimentation.

Took the poison ivy remedy. For the first time in my life, the pustules dried up and disappeared, the itching lessened, and the redness began receding, in a little over a day. Normal recession, really, just accelerated.

I was impressed, but then disappointed because there was just one small patch left that, while not pustulating, was still red and itchy. I mused to Milady the Healer, you know, this (the remaining afflicted area) looks like poison oak. So, I took the poison oak homeopathic, and that rash went away, too.

Repeated for several years since. Started taking a maintenance dose in the Spring, and my ivy reactions never came back as bad. Haven't had any in a while, although I haven't been out in the green as much in recent years.

Yeah, yeah, I know, homeopathy. Could all be explained by my more adult tolerance and then developed immunity and the sugar pills do nothing like the skeptics insist. Whatever. Not making a recommendation. Just reporting the anecdotal experience of one long-suffering ivy victim.

If it's all placebo effect, I don't care, as long as it works, right? Apparently psychosomatic auto-healing works for animals, too, per homeopathy's success on several cats' brown recluse bites.

FWIW, reporting from the field - field full of poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and a world of things to make me scratch and sneeze and bleed and ooze.
