2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, May 15, 2015. On this day in 1911 the idiots in black robes declared Standard Oil to be an "unreasonable monopoly" and ordered it to be broken up. Never mind that there was nothing in the Constitution that gave the federal government the authority to create laws to prevent "unreasonable" monopolies, or reasonable ones for that matter. This was probably the start of regulatory tyranny in the US. Standard oil was guilty of lowering the price of kerosene, which was widely used at the time. Competitors didn't like this because they could not compete against the lower prices so they sought government action to stifle Standard Oil and eventually got their way. And that is still happening and the public is paying for it.

3 President Obama does not appear to be drawing any more red lines with Syria's Bashar Assad amid allegations that his regime has returned to using chemical weapons.

That is because he looked like what he is the last time he did this, an ineffectual idiot. So what is he doing? That which he does best, nothing. Which in this case is best.

5 Remember how we had ISIS "on the run" in Syria. Well they are about to run right into the 2000 year old city of Palyra, an ancient roman ruin. Which if they follow their normal mode of operation they will destroy it because it represents idolatry or something.

9 House conservatives were successful in stripping language from a defense appropriations bill that would have opened military enlistment to illegals and thus giving them amnesty. Just read this extremely rabid and biased article from AP about those evil conservatives not allowing illegals in the military. Of course the RNCe is not happy. (more later)

15 Recall I said yesterday when that black teacher apologized for trashing whites that if she had been a white trashing blacks she would have never got to apologize. She would have been fired. Well here is the proof. So what was this white principal's "racist" remarks? At a graduation ceremony before the valedictorian gave her remarks a lot of the blacks in the audience decided to leave. She called out "look all the blacks are leaving". I guess the bar for "racist remarks" has got to be pretty low now. Compare that to the remarks the black teacher made about whites. There is no comparison.

44 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

Here's this week's Ziegfeld Girl, Doris Kenyon:

http://goo.gl/AgqPg1

At the age of 16, she sang for the composer Victor Herbert at a dinner party, who, impressed with her voice, cast her as the lead in his operetta Princess Pat. Moving on to film, she starred in The Rack for the World Film Company of Fort Lee, NJ and in the sadly now-lost serial The Hidden Hand for the Pathe studio. Her most famous role came as the Lady Mary opposite Rudolph Valentino in 1924s Monsieur Beaucaire.

After the sound revolution, Kenyon continued to work, her vocal training standing her in good stead. She made films throughout the 1930s, retiring from movies after 1939s The Man in the Iron Mask, then moving on to radio in the 40s and TV in the 50s. She died on September 1, 1979.

83 Suicide attempt...or Homocide?
The lead investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board says the Amtrak train sped up for a full minute before it derailed at a sharp curve.
Board member Robert Sumwalt says a camera mounted on the front of the train shows it was going 70 mph 65 seconds before the video went dark.
By 16 seconds before the crash, the train had increased to 100 mph, soon reaching 106 mph right before entering a 50 mph section.
Investigators are still unsure why the train was speeding up.
Sumwalt says inspection records show no anomalies with the track, signals or train itself. It had left Philadelphia's 30th Street Station on time.
He says engineer Brandon Bostian has agreed to speak to NTSB investigators in the next few days

Here's what Wilfred Owen had to say on the subject of chlorine gas:
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,Till on the haunting flares we turned our backsAnd towards our distant rest began to trudge.Men marched asleep. Many had lost their bootsBut limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hootsOf tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling,Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams you too could paceBehind the wagon that we flung him in,And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;If you could hear, at every jolt, the bloodCome gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cudOf vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,My friend, you would not tell with such high zestTo children ardent for some desperate glory,The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum estPro patria mori.

State I live in has minimum mark up laws.

That's right, thanks to this Depression era law it is illegal for businesses to charge even cost for items, least the government pays them a visit for trying to gain unfair advantage over other businesses who aren't as business savvy (or big enough to cut bulk deals with the manufacturers).

But sure, Capitalism is the failure and not the government has one hand on the scales and another reaching out for a bribe to adjust those scales according to what they can get out of it.

Ditto zoning, though that horse is pretty well out of the barn. We're all Zoned now.
I remember (when NIMBY was sort of patriotic), townships would put up signs bragging about the fact that they were "zoned." Sign of good citizenship.

Doesn't take the nosy-parkers long to find how good their access is to The Committee, and the most Godwin-tempting fascist I ever encountered in small-city govt was a zoning inspector ("I will not investigate your neighbor wrecking cars by hand with a sledgehammer at midnight UNLESS you spearhead Council's acceptance of national-model legislation to give me no-warrant rights of entry").

Amazingly, when the real big-money boys show up, or a National Govt initiative, all the zoning "protections" get thowed out the winder. Sorry, that's re-zoned now.

This happened several weeks in a row. The couple would make an appointment, have sex with no problems, pay the doctor, then leave.

Finally, the doctor asked, "Just exactly what are you trying to find out?"

BIG SPRING - Military officials have negotiated contracts with local ranchers to conduct Jade Helm training on their property, according to Big Spring Mayor Larry McLellan.

However, he said residents will not be 'forced out of their homes' to accommodate troops during the large-scale military exercise, scheduled to run July 15 through September 15.

McLellan had no details about the contracts supposedly offered to Big Spring homeowners. Military officials were not available to answer questions about how many ranchers were being displaced or inconvenienced due to Jade Helm, and how much they would receive in compensation.

Jade Helm operations planners previously confirmed training will only be conducted on private and public land with the permission of landowners or regional authorities.

One lifelong Big Spring resident told NewsWest 9 he would not accept any amount of money to surrender his home to troops.

'I support our troops, but when they're trying to take over our civilians, that ain't cool,' he said. '[Those are] their homes. That's where they live

253 That NYT article on bringing Syrian refugees to Detroit is stirring my thoughts. I suggest an alternative plan - a refugee assistance program. We send NYT staffers - reporters, editors, and publishers - and their immediate family members to resettle Syria and show the Syrians how they can all live together in harmony despite their differences. We can call them the Piece Corps in honor of how they are expected to fulfill their great mission.

How's that for an idea?

257 Ah, BB King. The greatest blues guitarist that nobody listens to.

Seriously, no one I know can name more than one song of his, and none of them listen to him on their music services/iPods/etc.

I'm not saying he has no fans; I'm saying it's a very select few. His music didn't really have broad, popular appeal.

Posted by: Brass Bancroft at May 15, 2015 08:55 AM (RHLfG)

258 I participated in one of the last full REFORGER deployments in the early Nineties. Jade Helm reminds me of that. Germans would volunteer and/or get paid to let NATO forces use their farms, gardens, barns, as training/staging areas. Sometimes entire towns would let us shut down their roads/squares for days on end. I remember trying to picture how it would work in the US, but figured I'd never find out. Could be that the home/landowners find it's a lark or even profitable. These are US troops, after all, not rampaging Huns.

I seem to recall that "experts" predicted that the oil well fires started by Saddam Hussein's retreating army in the 1990s were going to create conditions similar to nuclear winter and that we would experience a new ice age with the result that millions would starve to death.

I also seem to recall that their predictions did not come true.

The first Western front use of Chlorine gas was from fixed tanks in German trenches against a sector being held by French Colonial troops.
The attack was delayed because the Germans had to wait for a favorable wind.

276 I can see the logic of settling Syrian refugees in Detroit. Democrats look at cities the same way they look at the public school system. These institutions are run for the benefit of staunch Democrats. Resources are allocated to those Democrats on the basis of how many warm bodies they have under their control. When the parents of children in crappy schools either move to better school districts or put their kids in private schools, this is problematic for the Democrats who run those schools. One thing that makes Democrats absolutely furious is when somebody tries to shut down schools that consistently fail to educate children or fire the Democrats who run those schools and try with a new crew. Look how Mayor Fenty was chased out of Washington DC for trying to bring accountability to the schools there.

Well, cities are kind of the same thing. Democrats are just as bad at running cities as they are at running schools. They are so bad that people move away. Obviously what is needed is a program to fill up the cities with more poor people so that Democrats can keep their phoney baloney jobs.

When he was a child in Indonesia, Lolo would play BB King cassette tapes while they squatted in their mud hut eating dog meat. That music captivated a young boy who vowed that some day he would move to Chicago where all that great blues music was made.

Lolo and his mother are both dead so there is nobody to contradict him.
