Early Morning Thread 3/1/15: Just One Meal - San Antonio [krakatoa]

Happy Sunday, dear morons. I'll be traveling Monday instead of today, and off to wonderful warm (relatively speaking) San Antonio.

I've eaten at several nice places on & around the Riverwalk.

What's your favorite?

Been to San Antonio once, just for a day about 8 years ago. If I said I remember eating at a Tex-Mex restaurant, I don't think it would help.

I thought Levin's CPAC speech was good, although the best one I ever heard was Limbaugh's from 2009.

Maybe it's because I listen to Levin every night and he's much better off the cuff than reading from prepared notes.

Still, he beat up Obama and slapped around the Bushes.

(beat around the Bushes?)

Why do they want to get rid of it? Is it because it's tactical?

I guess the USAF believes that tactical air power wins battles but strategic wins wars. But hey, you can't win the latter without the former.

11 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, March 01, 2015. On this day last year the big news was Putin invading the Ukrain while we stood by. We were bemoaning the fact that Clinton made a "memorandum" to sorta support them and bypassed the Senate because he knew it would never be ratified. We have learned two things from this. (1) Democrats do not give a damn about the law or the Constitution and Congress even then would not hold their feet to the fire and (2) for the Ukraine; never trust the word of a lying Democrat.

15 Joke of the day:

The U.S. military is considering a months-long campaign of airstrikes to squeeze Islamic State fighters in Mosul before inserting Iraqi ground forces to retake the city, officials said Friday.

We will squeeze them by giving them some more weapons. Another pending great foreign police success for the Jar Jar and Obama. But not to worry, this will not start until the fall after they have killed everyone who is not insane and destroyed everything that has any value.

You could dig a tunnel under the garage door and get them out that way. While you're at it, you could kidnap some neighbors and slaughter the others while all the while blaming them for genocide and stealing your land.

For the record, I will NOT be holding my nose this time around.

Red Sonja was loosely based on Red Sonya of Rogatino, a character from Robert E. Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture" (The Magic Carpet, January 1934). Red Sonya, was a sword-and-pistol-wielding supporting character of the late Renaissance. Roy Thomas rewrote "The Shadow of the Vulture" as a Conan story for Marvel Comics' Conan the Barbarian #23 (1973). Thomas also based Red Sonja on another Howard character, Dark Agnes de Chastillon, a sword woman in 16th-century France.[8]

And yet there is no definitive proof that any strategic battle has been won by the Air Force.

Even WWII.

After all the bombs and the horrendous casualty rate, we didn't make headway against Germany (or Japan for that matter) until boots were on the ground.

Even the nukes were not the camel's straw, it was Russia entering the theater that gave the Japanese pause for thought.

That they have to resort to the Democrats to get legislation passed is totally indicative of which side they really are on.

And since we're looking at an extended period where liberal policies will be in ascendant, I don't see the difference.

Great Blizzard of 1888

"The Great Blizzard of 1888 or Great Blizzard of '88 (March 11 - March 14, 188 was one of the most severe recorded blizzards in the history of the United States of America. Snowfalls of 20-60 inches (51-152 cm) fell in parts of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, and sustained winds of more than 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) produced snowdrifts in excess of 50 feet (15 m). Railroads were shut down and people were confined to their houses for up to a week."

The "official" line is that we have to deal with "warmer" temps "more severe" weather and are overloaded with advice and programs on how to overcome the associated (largely imaginary) ills, but the sotto voce from field ag people is "here's how to deal with cold and ice"...

The Blizzard of 1888 caught a lot of people by surprise because weather forecasting was still fairly primitive at the time. Some people got disoriented and lost while walking home from work, and their bodies were found in snowbanks days or weeks later. At least we would have better warning today. There would be a lower death toll, but property damage would likely be higher.

---

Another storm I only learned about recently was the Great Snow of 1717:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Snow_of_1717

Our only knowledge of that storm is from diary entries, since that was before regular weather records were kept.

At that time the colonies were just small coastal settlements, and there were still plenty of Indians living nearby.

Some of the oldest Native Americans had said that even their ancestors never spoke of a storm of this magnitude.

When it rolled through the central part of the state the wind and rain were worse than either of the hurricanes in 2004, didn't last as long as the named storms but it was more intense. It spawned tornadoes all over the county that ripped up a couple of motels and a few trailer parks.

WWI officially began on July 28, 1914 (the Archduke's assassination was a month earlier) and WWII on Sept. 1, 1939. I wonder what date future historians will assign as the beginning of WWIII?

I'm inclined to say Sept. 11, 2001, but who knows? Nobody makes formal declarations of war anymore. Even Russia doesn't call their little adventure in Ukraine a "war". They're just helping the local Russian population, that's all.

170 Every year the Sun shrinks from us. Rejects our prayers and exhortations. The Moon Goddess grows and Mother Nature becomes cold and barren.

The creatures hide or are consumed by the earth, the winds grow angry and harsh. Soon frozen water falls from the sky.

Oh Gods why have thee forsaken us? How can we expiate our unknown sins and bask in the warmth of your love?

This happens every seasonal cycle. Our priests and shamen have yet to discover a sacrifice that will prevent it.

Will virgins cast from the cliffs prevent it? No.

Will animal sacrifice lessen our torment? No.

Only the worship of the God of Chronos can our sins be washed from us and the Earth returned to the warming embrace of the Sun.

At least until the next cycle begins again.

Am I the only one watching House of Cards?

I watched the original years ago. I had no expectation that they could do it right, so I never watched, but it sounds like I was right.

172 On weeknights I usually have the Waltons on while making dinner. (commence snickering) Currently, they are getting ready for WWII after much pacifist hand wringing.

My folks were both born in the summer of 39.

174 Zuni Grill was still there last time I checked. Great Tex-Mex with a twist: the prickly pear margarita.

This is made from the purple fruit of the prickly pear cactus, which grows west of Austin. They skin the fruits, soak them in tequila for a week, extract the seeds, then blend them into a frozen drink. Might also be available on the rocks.

It tastes like nothing else, which is saying a lot when you're talking margaritas.

Morning of 9/11/2001, I told the kids, "This is your Pearl Harbor. Everything changes after this." I haven't had reason to think otherwise.

182 La Fogada on Vance Jackson most excellent. Best Tex Mex on Riverwalk is La Margarita. Dick's Last Resort fun late night.

Posted by: Nikkolai at March 01, 2015 09:34 AM (aEfC9)

183 Go to La Margarita in Market Square and order La Parrillada. Best Mexican entre in San Antonio.

184 Hotel Valencia.

Don't eat too much. Drive out to Rudy's in Leon Springs for a BBQ lunch.

Posted by: the littl shyning man at March 01, 2015 09:43 AM (U6f54)

185 1) Sunday Brunch at La Mansion, one of the best;

2) Budro's - order the table side guacamole and a steak entre

3) Paesanos - order shrimp Paesano. Not as good as the orginal restaurant, but still good.

4) I think there is a Fogo De Chao on the River Walk now. Never been, but the chain as a whole is good, if you don't mind being carried to your car on a wheel barrow.

186 La Fogata. Not on river walk but the best

Posted by: Thunder B is Sick of This Shit at March 01, 2015 10:06 AM (i1Ykw)

187 La Fogata is best experienced in Reynosa, but unfortunately that is no longer an option, Cartels and all.

Posted by: Joel V at March 01, 2015 10:08 AM (YEVFf)

188 It has been a while since I was there, but you should get a burrito. Wash it down with tequila. Anywhere will do.

We used to stay at the Crockett Hotel behind the Alamo, and there is a bar at the Menger in which Teddy Roosevelt recruited some of the Rough Riders he took into Cuba.

190 SA is my home. Take a walk north on the Riverwalk to the Pearl Brewery. There are a bunch of new restaurants at the Pearl. No Tex-mex and a little pricier but the Pearl is worth wandering up to and the restaurants are good. The extension of the Riverwalk is worth the walk too. Otherwise Boudros is always good and La Fogata is owned by a friend and is a different take on Mexican food but is a 20 minute cab ride from downtown. Never been a fan of Casa Rio and the Mercado area is total tourista.

Posted by: Ray B at March 01, 2015 01:33 PM (GP98q)

191 I lived in SA until I moved to Austin.

-Mi Tierra's
-La Fogata's
-Paisano's (shrimp paisano and giant calamari)
-Rudy's BBQ has the best moist brisket hands down, you have to ask for moist! They also make some pretty good sides.

Posted by: lindafell in her own time zone at March 01, 2015 01:53 PM (LbPGR)

192 I second Ray B on his suggestions. The Pearl Brewery is north of downtown and is part of the Museum reach part of the riverwalk. It is about miles from downtown and is pretty gorgeous but maybe not in the freezing rain. There are a lot of cool things to see during the day along the way but the hanging fish are lit up at night and are totally cool. You can catch a river taxi to get to the Pearl. I think Boudros is pretty good and the Fig Tree and Little Rhein are good but very expensive unless you are on an expense account! Rents are high on the Riverwalk and the chains are the only ones who can afford the rents and the taxes unfortunately.

193 Acadiana out on the 410 just north of the 90.

Posted by: Richard McEnroe at March 01, 2015 02:21 PM (aTZRs)

194 If you are in SAN for lunch and downtown, hit Lulas on Travis (up on the street). Much more authentic TexMex than Acenar, and much better food than Casa Rio.

195 Neat thing about Acadian, it shares a parking lot with one of the Alamo Draft House Cinemas. Movie Theatre, Comic Shop, Game shop, Bar and Restaurant in one venue...and they well serve you dinner IN the theatre during the show.

196 Chuy's definitely. Tell the waiter that you want a combo #4 with Chicka-chicka boom-boom enchilada and cheese chile rellano with deluxe tomatillo.

197 The restaurants on or near the riverwalk are either mediocre or overpriced.

For mexican food, try SoLuna, on Broadway, not too far from downtown. The food is fabulous my wife says the margaritas are excellent. Once, she described to them what she had always wanted in an encilada, with odd vegetables and such. They cooked it right up, and she said it was exactly as she imagined it might be. If you're burnt out on chile relleno, they have a specialty one that you might find interesting. If you're not, the regular one is great.

Also within a quick shot of downtown (Blanco/Hildebrand) is Cris Madrid's, which has marvelous, gigantic, greasy burgers, with cheese running down onto the serving paper. The meat is seasoned, and not pre-formed. Your stomach will thank you, though your heart might curse you. Sometimes it's clogged with locals. If there's a line, don't leave. It goes pretty fast and is so worth it. Otherwise the locals wouldn't be in that line, now would they? Honorable mention for burgers goes to The Lord's Kitchen. It's in a sketchy part of town, but San Antonio's sketchy is like NY/LA/Chicago's decent.

Freetail Pizza/Brewpub on 1604 is one of our other favorite places. The pies are great, and the beer certainly pleases this hop-head, though the beer offerings for the non-hop-tolerant are few.

Fonda Latina is a crusty looking place on San Pedro that has great Puerto Rican food.

For cheap breakfast tacos, etc. the Taco Palenque chain is good, and if you don't like that, there's always Taco Cabana, Mama Margie's, or Chacho's, though you should only go to the (excellent) NW Chacho's location. Avoid the Perrin Beitel location, unless you want a good chance to give your concealed carry a spin. The two locations are nothing alike.

Also, while you're here, track down a place that sells bottles of 5-Stones beer. Aloha Pina is very nice, and is something pretty much anyone can appreciate. Also look for the Brewer's Cut series by Real Ale, and if you eat somewhere that has 512 stuff on tap, get it--especially the pecan porter.

Bangkok Cuisine is easily the best Thai place in town.

Seafood: this is San Antonio. You've probably had far better than any seafood we can offer.

Remember: trying to eat healthy in San Antonio is a fool's errand. Our lean offerings are crap. Throw caution to the wind, feast on fabulous, heart-clogging food, and expect to hit the gym a little harder for the next couple weeks.

198 I know I'm tardy to the party on this thread, but if you're gonna eat on the Riverwalk, go to the Esquire Tavern.

http://www.esquiretavern-sa.com

It's the oldest bar on the Riverwalk, serves lunch and dinner, with a great atmosphere and great food. Has a nice old west feel to it, dark and warm inside. No better place if you're there tomorrow, which you know of course is Texas Independence Day.

Posted by: Abby at March 01, 2015 05:48 PM (8wu51)

199 Paesanos has the best shrimp dish I have ever eaten. La Tierra just off of the river practically invented fajitas, and the abuela hand made tortillas are wonderful. Best steak house on the river is Boudros

Posted by: Ned Santee at March 01, 2015 10:13 PM (75eWh)

200 Stay away from the Riverwalk restaurants! El Mirador on St. Mary's for Mexican. For a GREAT chicken fried steak, try Tip Top on Fredericksburg.... like stepping back into the '50's. A truly local joint.

201 (1) Stay away from the Riverwalk restaurants -- except for Biga on the Banks (fine dining), Las Canarias @ La Mansion, Ostra @ Mokara (reliable Oysters for a snack), and Boudro's. Everything else is a tourist trap, (especially the Tex-Mex) but if you're into that, fine.
(2) Check out the restaurants at the Pearl (mentioned above): The Granary (best BBQ you'll find at lunch, and mind-blowing fine dining at dinner), Il Sogno (Italian, but you're in SA), The Sandbar (great seafood, and F*ck anyone that says different), La Gloria (critically acclaimed Mexican street food) or Cured (just what it sounds like -- emphasis on house cured meats).
(3) Come to King William/Southtown (my home): The Monterey (gastropub, great cocktails & interesting beers, plus, the kitchen is killing it lately), Hot Joy (Bon Appetit top ten new restaurant of 2014 - crazy fusion of Asian and South Texas cuisines + a great selection of Rieslings), Rosario's (old standby Tex-Mex, tourist friendly, but locals eat there too). Depending on how long you're staying, and how sick you are of Tex-Mex, you can check out Le Frite Belgian Bistro for good Moules Frite & some good Belgian beers.
