So, it seems like this might not be something good for an Innocence Project to do.

Ken Burns wanted to interview Sledge and use him as a primary source in "The War" but he did of cancer in 2000/2001. In the event, he quotes his book extensively.

IIRC, before he died both Sledge and Paul Fussell sat down and discussed their experiences in the Pacific and ETO either on video or audio in a lecture series. Might be on YouTube somewhere.

63 Sacrificing one individual's freedom (and let's be honest, he probably did SOMETHING, he's a crackhead) to gain the chance to save innocent lives by repealing the Death Penalty is great and noble work.

That's the thinking - the needs of the many, etc etc. So these IP guys will go down with the ship, knowing in their left wing heart of hearts they are doing God's...er, Gaia's work. True believers in the cause who have lost the very purpose and principle for which they fight.

Better 100 guilty men go free than one innocent man be convicted becomes better one innocent man be convicted than a punishment we disagree with be meted out.

Surprised they didn't try to have him sentenced to death, let it carry out, and then show he was innocent - all, of course, in the name of the "greater" good.

Posted by: GnuBreed at November 10, 2014 07:18 AM (n+MS4)

67 The Innocence Project gets convictions overturned by introducing "Reasonable Doubt". This usually consists of DNA testing old evidence and showing that the DNA of the convicted isn't on it, or that other DNA is present. The problem with this, particularly before 2000 or so, is that the evidence was not collected or preserved with DNA protection in mind. Until fairly recently, DNA was not used by most Police Departments; until the 90's it didn't exist and until the late 90's it was rarely available and expensive when it was. So, evidence got dusted for prints and tested for blood, and then it was fair game for police, attorneys, jury members, anybody to handle without precaution. Add this to the fact that we know that DNA transfer doesn't always happen and the Innocence Project suddenly had pretty good odds. Since they were taking old cases, witnesses could pretty easily be convinced to throw some doubt into what they'd testified to at trial, and the State had to weigh the costs of a new trial for a guy who had probably already served 15 years or so...enough punishment? Hopefully the widespread use of DNA in courts has made wrongful convictions a little less common, and cases for the Innocence Project a little less common.

68 Sledges book is awesome.

The IP story is appalling, and once again makes the point that no matter how harmless and beneficial a leftie program may appear, it must be opposed as if it were designed to promote cannibalism of the firstborn (which is probably its secret intent).

As for her acting, well.....

Look, Hedy Lamar was not exactly a Joan Crawford or Bette Davis when it came to acting. True, she was actually a genius and helped the war effort as well as create technology that is still the gold standard today.

But, she's best known for her time in Hollywood, and how she got there was how she got there.

There are no more "events" or "happenstance" to liberals.

No tragedy is off limits, they'll manipulate anything. "Puppets, tangled, strings" all that. It's remarkably frustrating to watch them weaponize any happening they can. And when the weapon fails to launch or backfire, they just abandon it, and the rest of us have to clean up their mess.

220 In most States, IIRC, prosecutors have a "code of ethics" preventing them from knowingly prosecuting the innocent.

A reciprical ethic barring defense attorneys from defending someone they know to be guilty does not exist.

Therefore, it is reasonable for me, while sitting in the jury box, to give the prosecutor more credence and to treat everything the defense says as a bald-faced lie.

That opinion will prevent me from ever serving on a jury.

263 It is odd that this topic comes up this Monday morning, because I have been contemplating it since Saturday night.

Saturday night I had just seen a movie entitled "Call Northside 777" staring Jimmy Stewart.

In this movie, Jimmy Stewart plays the part of a cynical newspaper reporter who is asked to look into the conviction of a man for killing a cop because his mother offered $5,000.00 to anyone who could free him. (Back in 1943 dollars.)

Jimmy Stewart (McNeil) starts off skeptical, but towards the end becomes convinced of the man's innocence and discovers information which he uses to get the man a pardon.

Funny thing though, the "Evidence" which they use to get the man free is not conclusive. It does not demonstrate that the man didn't do it, it only serves to impugn the testimony of the prime witness against him, and it doesn't even do a very good job of that.

It reminded me of another movie I have seen, "I don't want to die" which is a fairly obvious propaganda piece against the Death Penalty.

I was annoyed that Jimmy Stewart would lend his talents to this "Call Northside 777" movie which seems only intended as another propaganda piece to undermine faith in the conviction process.

What I come away with is that Liberal activists have been doing this sort of thing for a very long time.

I constantly rail against "the Process" of law. It is based on ritual and not on functionality. If any scientist alleged that his results must be correct because he followed a "process" he would be laughed at.

There are systemic problems with the legal system, and not a little part of them are based on this religious fervor with which they view "the process" as producing correct results.

It often doesn't.

Reliance on "Precedent" rather than first principles, is also an entry for much chaos into the system.

I think that's going to be locale dependent. In my county, if you came in with a Bible, Constitution, and/or an NRA hat, they'd make sure you were on the jury.

I called a few months ago for jury duty. Three suspects (I still don't know what they were charged with) decided they wanted a trial. So the judge trooped the entire jury pool up to the courtroom for selection and seated us in the gallery. Evidently the sight of 120 people pissed at having to be there changed the suspects' minds and they all decided to plea.

Examining a racial slur entrenched in American vernacular that is more prevalent than ever.

This season, the National Football League is attempting the impossible, a reasoned but dubious mission that has already tripped up an institution as venerable as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, municipalities as large as New York City and countless parents of teenagers across the land. The goal: banning the n-word within the chalk-lined borders of its purview.

297 The state's most powerful Republican secretly worked for months to help Democratic Gov. Cuomo win re-election -- in exchange for Cuomo's promise not to aid Senate Democrats in their Long Island races, a top New York GOP leader has charged.

Former state Republican Party Executive Director Michael Lawler -- who managed Rob Astorino's ill-fated gubernatorial run against Cuomo -- told The Post that he learned of the alleged bombshell deal between Senate GOP leader Dean Skelos and Cuomo just days ago, after suspecting for months that it existed.

"Dean Skelos clearly was working against Rob's campaign -- he and the governor cut a deal," seethed Lawler, a protege of GOP Chairman Ed Cox.

The Nassau County-based Skelos and his aides "fight for nothing, stand for nothing except staying in power," Lawler charged.

I haven't seen the movie so I cannot intelligently comment on it, but I would presume "Space Toyota" means some sort of spacecraft, presumably either an orbit to landing craft, or perhaps an Earth to Mars space craft?

The Earth to Mars issue is getting resolved. The VASMIR rocket engine can get people there in about a month if we can power it, and there are some new methods being worked on for powering it. Indeed, if Lockheed Martin isn't blowing smoke, we may soon (5-10 years) be having the technology to make space travel practical.

The Orbit to landing issue is another thing though.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at November 10, 2014 09:42 AM (jwNlc)

You broached the subject, so now I have to bring up a tidbit that I have always thought gives us an insight into human nature.

It turns out that during the filming of the original "Planet of the Apes" that the various actors working on the picture would self segregate during lunch breaks.

The Chimpanzee actors would sit with other Chimpanzee actors, the Gorilla actors would sit with other Gorilla actors, and the humans would all sit with other humans.

For whatever reason, people saw themselves as being a member of a particular group, and others were "outsiders."

Posted by: D-Lamp at November 10, 2014 09:44 AM (txvbW)

It's a device used in a movie where the craft you land in has enough energy to boost you back to space.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsiolkovsky_rocket_equation

as rule a thumb, it takes about 5 to 6 pounds to fuel to send a pound into orbit. The landers in that movie were not carrying that much fuel.

Getting back and forth in a gravity well is a real problem. I've wondered if Mars might be a more suitable candidate for a Space Elevator because of it's lower gravity. It should make the distance necessary to balance it lower than it would be for Earth, and thereby alleviating the necessity of having a fiber stronger than we can currently make.

Of course it's slower rotational period would make the distance greater, and so far I haven't bothered to sit down and work out the numbers regarding what this means.

Till it becomes a real possibility, I don't suppose there is any real point to it.

Still, lowering and raising from a cable ala the Fulton recovery system seems like it might be plausible.

I got the impression that they were scared of this out of control, aggressive man they'd never seen before. Which is stupid, in my view, because they would have needed someone vicious and aggressive to help them survive.

In the follow-on show "Talking Dead", the actor stated that in the graphic novel, Abraham's wife and children were raped by members of their group while he was away foraging for supplies, so he has that guilt to live with on top of everything else.

There's a scene near the end where Walhberg traps the bad monkey who stole his futuristic laser gun. It's clearly a laser gun because it is shown firing a beam type blast. When the bad monkey is trapped, he bangs the weapon against the glass and you can clearly see it is a stainless Beretta 92 and not a laser gun.

Big slip up. Or possibly Burton was trying to make an anti-gun point. Helena's monkey character is shown earlier making an anti-gun statement when Walhberg finds his weapon and says he's going to show the monkeys who's boss.

Also, I'm no mathematician, but it seems to me that a gravitational field capable of slowing the progression of time relative to Earth by a factor of 61,320:1 (seven years per hour) would annihilate a human being in a (relative) nanosecond.

Blind squirrel, nut, some assembly required.

Mostly what they do is "prove" that someone's DNA isn't in evidence (where "prove" often involves old, poorly preserved evidence), and then assert that absence of proof = proof of absence.

Yes, sometimes they're really right. Just as (and I tend to think more) often, they're (at best) questionably right.

I would say so.

A lot of people don't realize that the structure of our courts are a carryover from the English Monarchy.

The deferential treatment we display towards judges ("Your Honor, "Pleading", Sitting him on a "Throne", etc.) are all leftover trappings of the Monarchical based legal system which is actually inappropriate for a nation founded as a Republic.

Judicial arrogance is natural when your foundational assumptions are Monarchical.

Gaystapo scorecard - Our black-robed betters swapping freedom for fabulous.

*In Oregon, Christian bakers who refused to sell a wedding cake to two lesbians face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

*In
Washington state, an elderly Christian florist could face hefty fines
after she refused to provide wedding flowers to two gay men.

*A
Christian Colorado baker is appealing a judge's decision ordering him to
start baking wedding cakes for homosexuals and to provide his staff
with sensitivity training, after he refused to create a wedding cake for
two gay guys.

* The US Supreme Court this year declined to hear
the case of a Christian photographer from New Mexico who claimed that
refusing to shoot the commitment ceremony of two lesbians was an
expression not only of her constitutional right to religious freedom, it
was protected by her First Amendment right to free speech. New Mexico's
Supreme Court and the state's Human Rights Commission have decreed that
her refusal to shoot equaled unlawful discrimination.
========
And add in the couple who've recently been fined because they didn't to host a gay wedding on their farm.

We need to start asking these gay marriage supporters (not equality--otherwise they'd support incest marriage, polygamy, pedophilia marriage, etc.): Which anti-discrimination laws are you calling to be repealed? Or are you calling for the repeal of the First Amendment?
