Paging Theseus
Would Theseus come to the white courtesy phone please?
"It is ingrained in the Korean psyche that China is the big brother," said Samuel Koo, president of Arirang TV, South Korea's English-language broadcaster. "But Chinese-Korean relations were far from being an unmitigated love affair. We used to ship to them tens of thousands of virgins every year."
Just remember to raise the white sails this time.

I Have A Chair
It tilts. It swivels. It has tension adjustment for the tilt thingy. It has gas-operated lift, just like a rocket-hamster fed on beans. It's upholstered with elegant black leather. It has armrests where I can rest my arms. It has little wheels, too, five of them!
And I put it together myself!

It was $90 at the local office things store, marked down from $200. So I thought - why not? It will save wear and tear on my good dining chairs, and those cost more than that.
It's not super-fancy, but it's worth $90 and then some.

The Spongmonkeys Get An A
Those of you familiar with Joel Veitch's
rathergood.com (home to
the Viking Kittens and
Spode Blode and the Giant Bee) would immediately have recognised the critters in the
Quizno's Subs ad as
these guys.
They're called
spongmonkeys.
I don't know why.
But Ad Report Card on Slate
gives them an A.
(My favourite is still the kittens singing
Independent Women. "If Destiny's Child were kittens from Northern England, this is what they would sound like.")
(Thanks to Crossbow on the
JREF Forums.)
(Oh, and the
Wrong Bananas song is good too.)
(Update:
Blode and the Giant Bee. Well, it only took me six months to fix that.)

That's what those farking things are called!
Spongmonkeys!
My daughter loves those freaky things. Every single time that Quiznos commercial comes on, she's enraptured. Sometimes she walks toward the TV, as if enspelled, to rest her hands on the screen and whisper to them.
It's eerie, I tells ya. Eerie.

Chomskybot!
Furthermore, the systematic use of complex symbols suffices to account for an abstract underlying order. With this clarification, the speaker-hearer's linguistic intuition does not readily tolerate a corpus of utterance tokens upon which conformity has been defined by the paired utterance test. We will bring evidence in favor of the following thesis: relational information is not subject to problems of phonemic and morphological analysis. Thus the appearance of parasitic gaps in domains relatively inaccessible to ordinary extraction may remedy and, at the same time, eliminate the traditional practice of grammarians. For one thing, the natural general principle that will subsume this case delimits nondistinctness in the sense of distinctive feature theory.
The Chomskybot
If you've ever had to wade through pseudo-scientific babble in any field, you know how accurate that is.
Let us continue to suppose that any associated supporting element raises serious doubts about irrelevant intervening contexts in selectional rules. To provide a constituent structure for T(Z,K), most of the methodological work in modern linguistics is not to be considered in determining the traditional practice of grammarians. However, this assumption is not correct, since the appearance of parasitic gaps in domains relatively inaccessible to ordinary extraction suffices to account for an important distinction in language use. It appears that a descriptively adequate grammar can be defined in such a way as to impose nondistinctness in the sense of distinctive feature theory. I suggested that these results would follow from the assumption that this selectionally introduced contextual feature may remedy and, at the same time, eliminate problems of phonemic and morphological analysis.
It's scary!

Remember that printer I wanted? The one with 6 colour, 4800x2400 dpi printing? That prints onto CDs and DVDs? That has a USB 2 hi-speed link? (And another USB port to plug your camera in.) The
Canon i965? That printer?
Got it.
Got it $60 off retail too, which paid for 8 reams of HP high-quality inkjet paper that just happened to be selling at half price.

Shame it's so very, very dull. I class it with Lost Universe - a copy-of-a-copy clone of Slayers. Yeah, there's freaky stuff to come, but I can't get up the energy to care.
Of course, I feel the same way about Full Metal Alchemist, which is the second coming of cool among the hip kids this season. Take it as you will.
Watching el cheapo DVDs of the Silent Moebius TV anime. God, it sucks. Early digital piece-of-shit. It doesn't even have decent fan service. What kind of group-of-cute-working-girls anime doesn't have any fan service? The movies had enough. As if this crap was edited for Christian television. Except for all the, you know, pagan Eastern devil-worship.
I am torn between the shippy girlporn of Maria-sama ga Miteru and the shameless cheesecake of Daphne in the Brilliant Blue.

Well, I've only watched 4 episodes, and I think it's okay-ish so far. I agree with you about Lost Universe, though. I actually paid for that, and never bothered watching it past volume 2.
Full Metal Alchemist I'd give a mixed review to; it's got some good ideas, but some of the episodes are just a waste of time.
I've been downloading Daphne but haven't watched it yet. Thanks for the "recommendation"!

Lost Metaphors
The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.
William Gibson, Neuromancer
What? Bright blue?
That's what colour my TV is when it's tuned to a dead channel.
I was just watching the start of
Chrno Crusade, and the opening credits are old, degraded film stock, with all the blips and streaks and wiggly things you get with old films. Of course, it wasn't really, since Chrno Crusade was made last year; it's a digitally generated effect.
But I wonder, if all you had ever seen was digitally-projected perfection, what you would make of this?
After all, we are already bringing up a generation to whom
Y*(*&)@$^%B)#@$)(^F@#%)(T NO CARRIER means nothing. ADSL and cable modems
don't do that, and even on dial-up you're more likely to see a friendly pop-up message saying "Windows has detected some sort of problem somewhere".
You don't get the scrunchy, crackly sound of old vinyl records any more. I have about a dozen LPs stashed away... Somewhere. I don't even own a turntable. I still recognise the sound, of course, and a period song from the thirties or forties or fifties with that sound behind it will serve quickly to set the stage for a film or TV show. But how much longer will producers get away with that?
The sound of a shortwave radio that is just barely bringing in a signal?
The sound of a radio being tuned between stations using an analog dial rather than push-buttons?
The clatter of a manual typewriter, the chatter of a high-speed impact printer?
The whirr of a film camera? The mime routine for filming something - one hand curled in front of the eye, peering through; the other hand
cranking the film along at a steady 24 frames per second?
The click! of a camera shutter? Did you realise that in some places digital cameras are
legally required to produce a
click sound? And since they don't do so naturally, they need a small speaker to digitally reproduce the appropriate sound?
Maybe that's the answer. Maybe televisions should generate artificial static when your digital HDTV set-top box conks out. Maybe all mobile phones should be leigislated to go
ring ring rather than
bip-bip-biddely. After all, no matter what the ring tone is,
everyone reaches for their phone.
Maybe electric cars should be programmed to "backfire" every so often, and generate a nice throaty roar when you stomp on the "gas".
And maybe someone should write a program for Windows so that just when you least expect it you suddenly see

What scares me most is that the technology is moving beyond our ability to understand it. I can make a (rudimentary) record player out of a needle and a styrofoam cup... I don't think the same principles could be applied to, say a DVD burner.
Personally I will hang on to my "antique" record player, typewriter and reel to reel tape for as long as possible. That way when the world tears itself apart and technology is crashing down around our ears, I can stick on some Beethoven and write my journal the old fashioned way.

Rats and Gargoyles
So, if Casaubon's mother hadn't been around to summon the birds to catch and eat the soul-moths of all the people dying of the plague
magia that Plessiez had created to attack the Decans and their acolytes, and Zaribeth's sister hadn't arrived to guide the Boat of Night to pick up all those birds and their soul-burdens and take them through the Night Between Days (or whatever it was called) to tomorrow and reincarnation, would they (the souls) have then been sucked into the Night Sun and there suffered the True Death? And what would that have done to the structure of the Universe, already weakened by Spagyrus?
Exactly what role
did the University of Crime play in the final outcome of events? How essential was it that Plessiez went back and disrupted the plague
magia, aside from placating the Night Court? And the model of the Temple of Salomon that Casaubon and his friends built, that was finally made real by the Decan of the Eleventh Hour - did the pattern it embodied really make a difference?
Or did it all come down to Valentine White Crow, scholar-soldier of the Invisible College, saving Theodoret and finally pursuading Spagyrus not to commit suicide?
Heck, I don't know, and I've read the book.
There are two sequels, or at least books containing the same characters... Some of the same characters... Some characters with the same names. Anyway:
Left to His Own Devices and
The Architect of Desire. I'm reading those now, and I'll see if they shed any light on earlier events.
Probably not.

I've Just read the same book, and I thought it was fairly obvious as what had actually, happened, and that is, that the UOC, (the machines of maths, and the cards & dice in the fane), along with Cauabon's model had had, combined, twisted fate just enogh to compell Theodorets Magia to effect the Spagyrus back to the physical plain, (i.e. to convince him not to die) AND for plessiez to be able to disable the plague magia he had created, AND to allow every last moth to be swollowed by Luka's Birds. The three subsequent events all played ther own part in restoring order.
That is to say, three, seperate, cumulative actions, affecting three, seperate, cumulative actions, with three seperate cumulative effects.
So there you have, exactly what Ms Gentle has been saying throughout the whole story (and preceding ones,), Patterns Compel (3, 3, 3) and is the entire basis of the book (series) being a scifi bassed Hermatic Science.

Success!
Migrated the whole of MuNu to the new server. It mostly seems to work.
Problems encountered and overcome:
I couldn't get into PostgreSQL to load the databases. Then I could. Either I did something and have forgotten what it was, or it was just being pesky.
PHP was not built with PostgreSQL support. The automatic rebuild through CPanel did not work. A manual rebuild did.
One or two symbolic links pointed to a filesystem that doesn't exist on the new machine. Easy to fix once you find them.
On the old server, I can refer to a CGI script, say login.cgi, just as login and it works. I no longer have any idea how I did that, and I had to get creative to make it (sort of) work on the new server.
Left a couple of essential entries out of httpd.conf. This is understandable, since on the new server it is maintained by CPanel. This blew up Snooze Button Dreams, for example.
Forgot to create an account for Munuviana. Heh.
There were some other things, but I don't remember what. The usual delayed DNS changes taking me to the wrong site, that kind of thing.
Oh yes: Poxy suexec with its 17-stage security checking and wonderfully informative error messages, which completely broke Movable Type. Grr.
Now, I think it's time for a nap.

If you haven't already, you can try emptying your cache, restarting IE, rebooting, that sort of nonsense.
Or just relax and have a beer.

Hello (again)...I'm not getting anywhere too fast...lol.
Okay...what's happening is that posts don't appear on either page, Xfire or Munuviana. They DO show up on the edit entry list, but not in the 'recent posts' list on Xfire.
The only comments I can see are the ones left under either "DNS Bah" at Munu (or the ones under it) or "I know what happened" at Xfire, or the older ones.
To see yer comments, I was going to the 'manage weblog' button at whichever site and reading the comments that way...BUT...yer last comment, I can't get. I can get the previous one, but not the newest one. It's not blue, like links are when they can be clicked on...
As for the email part...I'm clueless as to what's up with that. No matter which of the 47 ways there are to access Yahoo mail I try, all that happens is it keeps clicking like it does when it changes pages and won't stop so it can load.
Sooo...I didn't get the last thing ya said because it was put under one of the two posts I can't see. I need to know what ya said...
I'd say try commenting under this post, DNS Bah at Munu or I know what happened at Xfire...
That oughta work...
Posted by: Stevie at February 22, 2004 09:02 PM (MP/aT)
6
Aha! I know what's happening.
No I don't.
That's very strange.
You're obviously getting to the new server at least for Munuviana, because I only posted "DNS Bah" on the new server. You should be seeing more new stuff there, but you're not, which sounds like a proxy or cache issue rather than a DNS issue.
Reboot everything, that's my advice.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at February 22, 2004 09:08 PM (jtW2s)
7
At the risk of sounding like a moron...what, exactly, is rebooting? Is it shutting down completely and restarting, or re-running install discs, or something else entirely?
Also...what's the cache? If that's old temp files and such, I do dump them constantly.
And, what are 'proxies' and how do I tell if that's it and fix it if it is?
Posted by: Stevie at February 22, 2004 09:21 PM (YKu7i)
8
Rebooting is shutting down and restarting, yes.
Your cache is your temp files, also yes.
The proxy is something that your ISP runs, like your temp files only bigger. It shouldn't be causing problems like this, but...
Posted by: Pixy Misa at February 22, 2004 09:26 PM (jtW2s)
9
Well, thank Gawd I got them right...lol.
Rest assured, I've restarted this thing, in all honesty, about 8 times, so far.
Still can't see recent posts or get to Yahoo mail, though. I can get to Hotmail, if that makes any sense...
Let's put it this way...everything is working fine on here, except not being able to see new posts and Yahoo mail.
Could the problems be related somehow?
And...'but' what?
(I just called Earthlink...they say 'no reported outages'...)
Posted by: Stevie at February 22, 2004 09:35 PM (MP/aT)

Also...just noticed that Site Meter hasn't recorded anything new since about 3:00am, my time and I know that's wrong, because you've been to Xfire (and so have I) since then.
Does that help or make a difference?
Posted by: Stevie at February 22, 2004 09:39 PM (P0Fqu)
11
"But sometimes it might."
Still...
The problem you're having with Munu and Yahoo sounds like the same thing - you can get there, but it doesn't update.
I'm going to do a little something, hold on...

I've Got Mine
I was doing an audit of the servers at work last week when I discovered that our backups no longer fit on one tape. Fortunately, we have DDS4 tape drives, but were using DDS3 tapes. So simply by using DDS4 tapes, we can fit 20GB on each tape instead of 12GB.
I went online to find a good price on DDS4 tapes. Last time I checked, they cost about $60 each, so I was pleased to see that they were now down around $30. I could get a box of five for $140, or a box of ten for...
$35.
Naturally, I immediately ordered five boxes of ten. They arrived today, total price $184 including $9 shipping.
The price has now been fixed, and a box of ten sells for $288. But I don't care, because
I've got mine.

I didn't realise computers also get audited. Is it the same as when the tax office does it, or more like when that internal auditor comes around asking why you do your job completely differently to the rules (something to do with the real world we live in rather than planet theory).
And now you can setup a sideline in tapes when you're not planning for world domination.

More like the latter. The server is supposed to be doing X list of tasks each day/week/month... Are they all being completed correctly? On time? And so on.

Dang. That beats my camera battery for $70 vs camera battery plus carrying case plus carrying case for extra memory cards for $69 anyday.

Ippatu Diaries
In epsiode 5, we learn what to do if you and your roomate are trapped inside a barrel which is slowly filling with water.
In episode 6, we are taught how to deal with being swallowed by a 7-metre python.
In episode 7, we find out how to make a sturdy rope out of toilet paper. Also, that seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.
In episode 8, we learn how to use a steam cannon to escape from a raging bushfire.
This is one of the most educational shows I've ever seen!

Just from the description, that sounds like one odd little series. Did they use it as filler between programs?

Oh, it's much odder than it sounds.

Yes, it was probably used as filler. Late-night filler.

Funnily enough, knowledge of how to cope with scenarios 6 and 8 have come in handy on more than one occasion. Beyond that, I cannot ellaborate.

Pray For Me
Lately, I haven't been able to sleep at night. And my boss gets annoyed if I sleep during the day.
It could be the weather, which has been disagreeable of late. If could be that I'm a suffering from some fatal disease. Or it could be that I drink too much Coke.
Since I can't do much about the first, and don't want to think about the second, I have decided to forswear the Coca Cola Corporation and all its products. Since I don't drink coffee and rarely drink tea, the only caffeine I consume will be naturally occuring.*
We'll see how that goes. If you note a marked change in the quantity, quality, or style of my postings, well, this is why.

I've had a similar problem--perhaps its beal-related? (or maybe it's all those naps I keep taking...)

Don't forsake the Coca-Cola Co.'s products. They'll track you down. They have ways. Why not switch to their non-caffinated products like Sprite, or even better why not pay $2 a time for Mount Franklin drinking water. That way you don't betray CCC and you can still pay for something you can otherwise get out of the tap!

Ippatu Update
Okay, summary of episode one*
Our heroine, Kunyan, must escape from a sauna after dislocating both shoulders and both hips. She only has a limited amount of time to do so before she loses consciousness due to dehydration.
Oh, and in escaping she also manages to dislocate her jaw.
This is accompanied by medical information on joints and dislocation and diagrams showing the distance from the seat to the door of the sauna measured in Kunyan-lengths.
Kids, try this at home!
Episode two:
Kunyan and her flatmate have purchased a live King Crab for dinner. Unfortunately, it has escaped and is now firmly attached to Kunyan's face. They try to remove the crab using centrifugal force:F (centrifugal force) = mv2 / r
(m = Kunyan + crab, r = radius, v = velocity)
That's direct from the video, by the way. Success!
Well, each episode is only four minutes, so they have a limited opportunity to torture poor Kunyan.
One more:
Trapped in an awkward Yoga position, Kunyan accidentally spills a bottle of liquor and it catches fire from a lit cigarette. Given that Kunyan is unable to stand up, how can she put out the flames?
Solution: Taking her flatmate's box of Valentine's Day condoms, Kunyan walks on her hands into the kitchen, climbs into the sink, and makes an arsenal of water balloons. (The video shows the recommended method for this.) The fire is put out, the apartment is saved!
As Kunyan says:
Arigato... condoms.

Ippatu Kikimusume
There's something about this
unusual little anime series. But just what, I don't know.
If I try to open the directory, Windows Explorer crashes.
If I persevere and try to view the video, Winamp crashes.
Ahh. Things are back to normal, it would seem.
