Holy shit...

Sr. just got back from doing the horses and scared the fuck outta me by coming in and saying, all wild-eyed, "You have GOT to come with me and look at this. I have never seen anything like it before it my LIFE!!!"

First thing I said was, "Okay. You've got me scared shitless. What are you talking about? Is something wrong?"

"Oh, no, nothing's wrong. It's the moon..."

So, I step outside and there is the biggest ring around the moon I've ever seen.

It is HUGE.
And, crystal clear inside, too.
The sky is literally a coupla shades darker inside the circle than outside it.

And, there's what must be a bit of plane contrail across one side of it and it looks like a "Q".

So...
anybody know what this is?
Bossman says it's an old wives tale sign of snow.
He added that he hopes the size of the ring isn't relative to the amount of snow coming.
(Me too, that.)

1 Bossman's correct...I remember an old folk rhyme from a long time ago: "A ring around the sun or moon means rain or snow upon you soon". The "Mr. Wizard" explanation: The ring around the sun or moon is caused by ice crystals within thin cirrus clouds. The refraction causes light to shine into a ring. Cirrus clouds are generally the first layer of clouds that are seen as a storm system approaches. Sometimes a ring can form around the sun for the same reasons with a variety of other really cool phonomema - my favorite is the "sun dog" - usually appears as a pair of bright (sometimes rainbow) spots to each side of the sun, sometimes with a ring or halo...sun dogs are also formed because of the presence of cirrus clouds and are also a good harbinger of rain or snow...
