Making The Grade
I just didn't expect it this early. I mean, Gov. Rick Perry (R) of Texas has not yet actually placed himself in the running for the 2012 Presidential race, so perhaps it's a bit premature for the Left (I was going to say the Media, but what's the difference?) to attack him. But then again, it's a different world these days, except when it's not.
By that I mean that one of the most tried and true Leftist attacks is to brand any Republican stupid, usually as evidenced by his SAT score or his undergraduate grades in college some 30-40 years ago. This particularly
Leftist cannon has already been fired at Mr. Perry with the claim that he received a C or D or three in some of his undergraduate classes at Texas A & M, which college must, to any sophisticated journalist, surely consist of a pothole-filled dirt road leading to an outhouse and a renovated fried chicken restaurant.
Well, return with me now Gentle Readers to those thrilling days of yesteryear when Sen. John Kerry (D, N. Vietnam/Jane Fonda) was running against George W. Bush, both graduates of sainted Yale. The Left ran the usual academic attacks against Mr. Bush, representing him as an accented Texas dolt with a C or D or three in some of his undergraduate classes. Boy, wasn't that good for a few laughs around the more chic bistros frequented by the self-appointed elite? Well yes, until that is, it was revealed that Mr. Kerry's grades within those ivy-covered walls were even lower. Ooops. Suddenly that line of attack more or less disappeared as the attacks on the Swift Boat Vetsfor daring to attack Mr. Kerry by stooping to revealing his actual record (such as his smiling portrait on the walls of the North Vietnamese War Museum shaking hands with equally smiling Communist murderers)ramped up.
Now we have Governor Perry, a man with a long record of actual accomplishment and success in such insignificant endeavors as running a business and creating a climate conducive to jobs and economic growth, compared to the diametrically opposed record of Mr. Obama whose economic policy consists primarily of saying: "it's George W. Bush's fault! Nyaaah!"
"Oh yeah?" Say Obama sycophants and the press (but I repeat myself). "Perry got Cs and Ds at some no-name school in some backward, red state where everybody marries their sisteror something. So there! Nyaaah!"
Very well. Let's see Mr. Obama's grades then. In fact, let's see his undergraduate and graduate transcripts so that we can see not only which intellectually demanding courses he took, but how the most brilliant human being (a man who was actually able to swat a fly!) ever to walk the Earth fared. This information is currently classified somewhere above top secret in a classification so secret that no one, not even Mr. Obama, knows what it is. Wouldn't it be simple fairness for Americans to see Mr. Obama's brilliance? Wouldn't it be best to spread the grades around, so to speak? If Mr. Obama's supporters publicize Mr. Perry's grades, why shouldn't Americans expect to see Mr. Obama's grades?
How about it Mr. Obama? To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, a man whose words you seem more than willing to misuse: "Mr. Obama, tear down this wall behind which your grades hide!"

Some years after working in a large business, running a branch office, responsible for the P&L, budgeting, sales, ops, training, you name it, I went back to school (after five years of college in another major not related directly to business) to study business. One of my first courses was Econ 101. First week the prof had us read chapter 1 and be perpared to discuss and test on it. I did. During the discussion the man effectively said the opposite of what the book said and I asked him if grades were to be reflected on what the book said or what he said, having read from the book after his statements. He said the correct test answers would be what he said.
I knew better having practiced the lessons in business for several years what he mused about for much longer. Chapter 1 was correct. I dropped the class.
For Perry, or even BarryO, to have made a middling or low grade in a course is a "so what" moment for me. Living the life offers a much more vivid reflection of one's abilities than theory any day.

Perry has a huge problem, the people he associates with. You take a good look at the American Family Association and you'll see how bigoted and short-sighted a group they are. So long as Perry associates with the AFA, the more the general public will come to oppose Governer Perry as a prospective candidate, and as an individual.
For Rick Perry to win the Republican nomination he needs to repudiate the AFA and distance himself from that group. Doing anything else means losing the nomination.

Don't get too excited about Perry. He headed Gore's efforts in Texas and is a born again Repubulican, RINO. I also suspect he has ties to the Christian Coalition. In short, he is another Bush. We need a real conservative or libertarian in the office.

I might indicate that even if Obama had the best grades in the world, it means very little. One of the little known aspects of affirmative action programs is grade adjustment. I saw this first hand as a professor in a medical school. Certain people were compensated for as it was felt they needed the better grades and opportunities.

The Deadliest Day
An American special operations helicopter—most likely a CH-47—was downed last night in Afghanistan in the deadliest single incident of the Afghan war for American forces.
A military helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. special operation troops and seven Afghan commandos, the country's president said Saturday. An American official said it was apparently shot down, in the deadliest single incident for American forces in the decade-long war.
The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene.l
I think I can speak for both Mike and myself in offering our sincere prayers to the families of those lost, and for the souls of these brave warriors.
Godspeed.
Update: The majority of the dead are Navy SEALs from Team 6. The aircrew is probably from the Army's 160th SOAR, and the remainder of those killed were Afghan military. It is beginning to sound like a Taliban gunner got lucky with an RPG as the helicopter shortly after taking off as the mission was completing and the unit was exfiltrating.
Elements of Team 6 killed Osama bin Laden.
I would not be surprised at all if the RPG came from the Pakistani ISI.

The spirit and dedication of our military never seems to change. They are now and have always been the strength of our country. The article just below this one, The Literature Corner: My Very Dear Sarah, should not be missed. The same letter could have been written by the men who died in Afghanistan. Remarkable people. May they rest in peace.

This edition of the Literature Corner is devoted to one of the greatest and most touching artifacts of the Civil War: The letter of Union Major Sullivan Ballou to his wife, Sarah. Ballou was killed on July 28, 1861, but wrote a letter to Sarah on July 14, a letter that reveals his premonition of his impending death. It first came to the attention of most Americans when it was featured in Ken Burn's brilliant documentary on the Civil War.
Ballou was a lawyer. He volunteered for service. He left behind Sarah and his two youngs sons, Edgar and Willie. He was only 32 when he died.
The letter speaks not only of Ballou's love for his wife in intimately touching, timeless ways, but of his love for his country, for principles and ideals beyond himself, ideals worth far more than the life of any one man. It is in this letter that we see the soul of America. We see what countless Americans have seen, what they have always understood, and what they have always been willing to fight and die to preserve. We see what Abraham Lincoln said in the Gettysburg address: "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
There are some documents, some writings that every American must know. This letter is among them, and if you were not previously aware of it, you now have the chance, the obligation to ensure that your children know it, and that they know what it means. In this simple, heartfelt letter, we have the answer to those who believeincluding our Presidentthat America and Americansare nothing special. Major Sullivan Ballou reveals the depth and majesty of his soul, of the souls of Americans, and of the shallowness of those who would deny it.
Whenever I read this letter, I weep. I weep for the loss of one of the best of us and for those who have paid the ultimate price that I may live in comfort and freedom. I weep for the purity and intensity of his love for Sarah, and pray that my love for my wife might be so sincere and worthy. I weep that any American would be so base as to not understand Ballou or to ridicule his love of country and his countrymen. And I weep as I fear that too many of us may no longer care to understand this letter and men like Ballou. I pray I am wrong.
I am, however, comforted by one unshakable belief: I know that Major Ballou did meet Sarah and Edgar and Willie again, and that it was a meeting joyous and fulfilling beyond our imaginations. They deserved it, and the just and merciful God provided it.

I have always loved this letter. It is so touching on many levels. Tragically, I don't think it is read in too many literature classes any longer. Rather sad that so many young people miss reading such a classic as this letter. Thank you for posting it.

Voting to give yourself more credit does not solve your spending problem. Any kid knows this, but Congress and the President thought they played by other rules.
They were wrong.
As a result, Standard and Poor's has
downgraded the U.S. economy (PDF), marking this moment as the first time our nation's credit has
ever been downgraded.
Further, S&P indicated that conditions for a further downgrade were possible in 12-18 months.
If you aren't sure what that means, let me translate it into more practical terms, when I compare it to the economic equivalent of an
ELE.
If Obama really did intend to Cloward-Piven the United States intentionally, he has done so masterfully. We've just become the
Nicolas Cage of world economies.
Great job, "elites."

Yeah nice spin. S&P downgraded the USA because your team refuses to bring tax rates back to where they were from 1950-2000. Did you even bother to read what S&P said before you wrote this? Here, let me help:
"Compared with previous projections, our revised base case scenario now assumes that the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, due to expire by the end of 2012, remain in place. We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act."

You have to remember that Jim belongs to a group that feels entitled to spend not just other people's money, but the money of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, in the sincere and misguided belief that government knows what is best for you in each and every aspect of your life.
He can't see that the massive hikes in spending under the recent Democrat-controlled are a problem. He actually thinks more spending is the answer to the problem, much in the same way alcoholics think the answer to all their problems can be found if they can only scrounge up enough money for another bottle or three.
He can't grasp that raising taxes, which drains the coffers of individuals and businesses alike, is bad for the economy because it decreases cash flow and disposable income for everyone except the government.
Phelps, Jim's view of the world is completely alien to the view we and the Founders shared of a limited government, where citizens are sovereign.
He believes that what we need is more government, more rules, more conformity, and more control... if he can just get government big enough to seize all he demands.

Don't need to tell S&P, Jim. They certainly understand. as would you, if you'd actually read what they said when they downgraded us. They did not call for higher taxes. In fact, they explicitly took no position on that. From the document:

Takes no position. Slightly different from what you said, and you conveniently didn't link to what they said to avoid having people read for themselves. S&P would have been equally happy with a package consisting solely of cuts, as long as it had been big enough, but the President would have none of that.
This downgrade was inevitable, because the size of government Obama and the other socialists Congress want simply can't be paid for at our current level of taxation. So Obama only offered two alternatives. One, to get the Republicans to raise taxes (hey, it worked with Bush Senior), which would have demoralized half the country and ensured an Obama reelection and a Democratic resurgence, while locking in the much larger government, or two, to attempt to make sure that he could blame the Republicans when the inevitable happened. This was all about his reelection, he doesn't give a damn about the country's economic health. Why should he? He's rich, set for life. And he understands that people who are on the government dole tend to vote Democratic, so he wants as many people to be poor as possible.

Just a quick point, Gentle Readers: Let us not forget that for the last two years of the George W. Bush administration, Democrats controlled the Congress, hence, the nation's pocketbook. Mr. Bush (and a good number of irresponsible Republicans) did indeed engage in some unwise spending schemes which surely delighted Dems, but when Mr. Obama and others trot out the "Bush did it too" argument, keep in mind that the Dems have been primarily or entirely responsible for our nation's spending since 2006.

I agree they don't care how that mix is achieved, the numerical result will be the same, but they clearly frame the issue as one of either gutting entitlements -- social security and medicare -- or repealing the Bush rates for the top bracket.
Either death panels for seniors -- stop getting old and sick already OR simply returning to the tax rates we had before the Bush cuts. Like the rates we had in the Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, or Bush I years. Socialists all no doubt.
CY in Nov 09 you were very outspoken about any rationing of health care saying lower spending would cause the death and suffering of Americans.

Straw man. No one here has argued that higher taxes would be "socialist". What we have argued is that they are pointless. When spending keeps increasing at this rate, there is no tax rate that will keep up with it. None. The Laffer Curve will catch us far before then.
Even Obama has gone on the record saying several times that it is a terrible idea to raise taxes in a bad economy. He really hasn't come up with any reason to do so now except "fairness".
Look at federal revenue as a percentage of GDP:

That's the real tax rate. That's where the Laffer Curve really lies. The marginal rates have varied widely in that time with very little influence on how much money the federal government has actually managed to bring in. It's 25-35% of the GDP, regardless of the rate. Thinking that we can spend 34%+ of the GDP (the current rate) or even push it higher as the president has proposed flies flatly in the face of a historical revenue rate of around 30%.
It just can't. Be. Done. People stop making the money to pay into the system, either by choice or by a hobbled economy.

The SandP clearly say the the US has to cut 4 trillion in spending or suffer further downgrade. I don't see where they advocate increasing taxes as well. Perhaps we should have the other 51% of the US pay taxes to make everything fair and bring in more revenue.
But then consider that any tax increase in a depression will worsen the economy. That is what FDR did and it resulted in an additional 20 years of pain.
Go take eco 101, you will learn something and not have to pick up this stuff off the web.
It is clear the Obama is trying to destroy the US. Obamacare is the worst thing that could have happened and will rob us of any wealth we can keep after this bum is out of office. And note this, the elderly clearly know who the bad guy is in the room and intend of taking care of him in 2012.

S&P officials said today that we will be downgraded again if we do not cut out DEBT... not increase our spending. They can tax the "rich" at 100% and it won't solve the problem.
The Left Behinds simply refuse to deal with that reality.

Just One More Reason to Carry a Concealed Weapon
Mob violence isn't confined to the Middle East.
An unknown number of victims are hospitalized with serious injuries. One victim was ripped from his bike and beaten unconscious. People were afraid to get out of their cars to assist the seriously injured man for fear of putting their own lives in jeopardy.
An unarmed man cannot stand against a violent mob, but with a firearm, he stands a chance of not just saving his life, but the lives of others.

THIS is where the tough questions arise.
As a potential Wisconsin CCW holder, I think that merely brandishing would have discouraged some of the yout's in their rampage.
How-some-ever: if brandishing doesn't achieve its purpose, that is, the crowd does not find someone else to attack, does one pull the trigger against apparently un-armed opponent(s)?
One would like an array of defensive weapons, starting at baton, then pepper-spray, then beanbag shotgun, THEN lethal.
But life isn't that simple, is it?

Well, there are moral and legal aspects to your question. Under what circumstances does Wisconsin law allow the use of lethal force? Does it allow brandishing your weapon? Since brandishing can be considered a threat, does it now give the crowd a legal basis for attacking you because you have now threatened them and placed them in fear if imminent bodily harm? Same thing with warning shots.
A beat down can kill you. Look up the story about the individual beaten into a coma, and possibly permanent vegetative state, at LA stadium on opening day this year.
Yes, you pull the trigger if you are in fear of imminent bodily harm to yourself or others legally under your authority to do so. Tactics on how many rounds into who are up to you.

By that logic, you are using your ranged weapons last and your clubbing weapons first so neither one is really of any value to you.
Oddly enough, the US Army used to teach the incremental approach when it came to first aid and controling bleeding. First direct pressure, then bandage, then pressure bangage then pressure points and when all else fails, apply a touniquet. Then they discovered that the patient died somewhere between steps 2 and 3. Now they teach tourniquet first.
Fireams are the same way. In most justisdictions, you can only use a firearm in your own defense (or in defending someone else) if you believe your life is in danger. If you really believe that, why are you wasting your time with all that other stuff that will get you killed?
A gun does more than just launch bullets. It makes a really loud noise that tells a large crowd of people that play time is over. The rules just changed. Non-lethal stuff might help in a one-on-one fray but still go unnoticed in a mob. Shooting a gun gets attention.
Also, you can't go armed to the state fair looking for trouble. If you expect violence at the State Fair, your right to self defense begins and ends with avoiding the Fair.

But the CCW and carrying a weapon isn't any indication of 'looking for trouble' or an expectation of violence anymore than wearing a motorcycle helmet, boots and jacket while riding are looking for or expecting an accident on any particular day. They are insurance against undesirable events.

I agree. But if he expects rioting at the state fair and straps on and goes there and hangs out at the gate waiting for trouble to break out, then he is "looking for trouble".
He would be asked at his trial why he went there if he expected trouble and he would have to make a credible argument that the previous night's trouble was an isolated incident so he wasn't expecting trouble and he was just carrying to defend himself against the normal risk of trouble that everyone is under everywhere and everyday. Having a habit of carrying all the time will help his defense.

One question that needs to be addressed is, are you ready to use your weapon? Not everybody is. Whether you're using a club or a firearm you had better be ready and willing to use the weapon, or else it will be, at best, useless, or used against you. All the training in the world is worthless when you won't use your equipment against imminent danger.
If you can't use your weapon you might as well leave it home, where a possible assailant can't get his hands on it to use against you.

Contempt Of Cop: Update 2
On July 31, I posted an article (here) about the behavior of Canton, OH police officer Daniel Harless during his arrest of a man legally carrying a concealed handgun. I also wrote about the thoughtless, off-topic anti-gun comments of the President of the Canton City Council, Allen Shulman. Mr. Schulman apparently continues to be concerned by issues other than those of the behavior of Officer Harless and the Canton Police Department. Heres an example from the Canton Fox affiliate:
"Schulman told Fox 8, 'We've received hundreds of e-mails, all from out of town, not only out of town but out of state, Texas, Arizona, places that seem to love people carrying concealed weapons."
Schulman said the case illustrates the inherent dangers of Ohio's concealed weapon law, which he calls, 'crazy'.
'I believe in people's right to bear arms, but I believe in rational, reasonable gun laws, and these concealed weapons are going to create a lot of problems', said Schulman. 'And my biggest concern is, it's going to end up killing people.'"
As I noted in that article, I sent a link to the article to Mr. Schulmanan attorneyinviting him to respond and promising to print his unedited response. It's unsurprising that Mr. Schulman has not, as yet, responded. I will also send Mr. Schulman a link to this article, and the offer stands.
Many readers raised thoughtful, intelligent points and questions relating to the case, as our readers always do. I hope to address them to their satisfaction in this update to the original article. I hold out this hope as I now have information that was unavailable when I wrote the original. The focus of this article will be to provide readers with insight into the factors any police chief must consider in dealing with the kind of disciplinary issues presented by the behavior of an officer like Daniel Harless. As with much relating to police work, it's more complicated and difficult than many realize.

One of the concerns of many readers was my reluctance to say without qualification that Off. Harless should be fired. I was unwilling to make that assertion because I did not have sufficient information about Off. Harless and his background. That lack of information has been rectified.

I'd think that the moment this officer threatened to murder a citizen who wasn't actually threatening him was the moment someone should have said "hey, this guy just committed a felony on camera - maybe we don't want known criminals to be police officers on our force..."
I've seen enough police/public interaction to know when an officer has gone off the rails. Yeah, you can be grumpy, yeah, you can even threaten force when necessary - but when you tell someone that you're going to murder him and get away with it, you just proved that you're not a cop - you're just a thug who scammed his way into a job that you're not really qualified to perform.

As off the wall as the videos project, this officer certainly should not be on the street and in contact witht the public at this time.
I hope that a thorough review of his entire career including videos, his entire jacket history, and partner interviews would be considered. I'm generally pro-cop. There is a chance that this behavior is mostly recent and could indicate a medical condition such as on-coming diabetes, brain tumor, or other such affliction that has spawned a change in behavior. Or even some psychological trauma affecting him. In lieu of any evidence of those issues, he needs to be released back into the wild.

Officer Harless cannot be trusted to perform his duties as an officer of the law, therefor he needs to be removed from association with the Canton PD and, in a word, fired.

An Air Force captain died Wednesday afternoon when her car was hit by an off-duty El Paso County sheriff's deputy with a history of traffic offenses who ran a red light, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Vivian Elmo, 41, an active-duty reservist with the 310th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base, was turning left from Curtis Road onto Highway 94 when her 1994 Honda Accord was struck in the side by an SUV driven by Rodney Fannin, the state patrol said.
Fannin, 42, was heading east on Highway 94 and drove through a red light at the intersection with Curtis Road, the state patrol reported.
"Colorado court records show Fannin has two reckless driving convictions, one from 1996, and another in January in which another person was injured.
Fannin was sentenced to six months probation in the January crash after he pleaded guilty."

Having worked as a miltary liaison with the DEA for almost three years, I slowly came to the conclusion that a significant percentage of cops (in this case federal) generally view civilians with contempt. To many of these guys, there are two kinds of people in this world: cops and perps; and if you're not the former, the only reason you're not in jail as the latter is because you haven't been caught...yet.
From watching videos of uniformed thugs beating up bystanders for filming them on the job to black-clad SWAT teams shooting a Marine veteran 60 times for the crime of trying to defend his family when they burst into his home, I've concluded that we have the beginnings of a US version of the Stazi of former East German fame.
I see little difference between this thug and any criminal trying to intimidate a victim he's targeted for a mugging. Check that--he IS different in at least two respects: he can, literally, murder me, my wife, or my daughter and have a VERY good chance of getting away with it, and; if citizens try to hold him accountable for doing his job in the manner witnessed, his union will make sure those individuals are intimidated into silence--"Nice family ya got there...be a shame if anything happened to 'em."
Cops are NOT your friends. If you're not one of them, you're, well, not to be afforded the protection and service they are supposed to be providing.
I wish to God I didn't feel this way, but that bullet-headed baboon surprised me not a bit.

Well, this time, upon meeting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, he welcomed her as a member of the "cracked head club." Multiple reporters heard Mr. Biden say it, and he bragged about it later. Rep. Giffords, you may recall, was shot in the head several months back and is still struggling to recover from her wounds. She will likely experience some significant degree of impairment for the remainder of her life, and her future in Congress is very much up in the air. One B-17 goes down, that's 10 people.
The air war aginst "fortress Europe" must have been awesome. While the leading elements are bombing Berlin the tail end is still forming up over the English Channel.

Not to piss in your wheaties or anything but, I didn't catch anywhere in the article on the missing assault weapons from Ft Irwin saying they were fully automatic. Right now Widener's is selling Bulgy AK-74's for less than $400 (Except to the friendly folks in CA of course). Semi-autos only. As for public safety issues, I'd be more scared of a determined marksman with the Dragunov than a gangbanger laying an AK-74 (fully automatic) over the roof of the car with one hand.
It's an interesting story though. A theft of foreign military weapons from a warehouse presumeably located on Ft Irwin, CA. That raises so many questions. Why were the weapons on Ft Irwin in the first place? Why were they in a warehouse as opposed to the armory? Who would know where they were? And probably the biggest question..... What else was taken?

Basic Mileage Math
It's official: the Obama Administration has set a CAFE average of 54.5 MPG by 2025. On one hand, manufacturers are warning that such unrealistic and politically motivated hocus pocus will raise the price of new cars far more than the market can bear and will dramatically reduce safety while destroying thousands of jobs and further damaging our already fragile economy, even if it is possible to engineer vehicles that can, across an entire fleet, reach such fanciful numbers (it's not). But it's not all bad news! The good news is that a good portion of those thrown out of work will die in car accidents because their vehicles will be smaller and lighter and far less capable of absorbing impact energies. This will, of course, lessen unemployment.
On the other hand, the Obama Administration and its allies claim that the wonders of green technology will save fuel, create or save jobs, cure the common cold, make you more attractive, raise the debt ceiling, make you taller and give you erections lasting longer than four hours which do not require medication or a call to a doctor. To be fair, the claims of these people are only slightly less whimsical and fantastic. What is certain is that their numbersif you take a moment to analyze them by means of the kinds of highly advanced methods taught only in the finest Ivy League schoolsaddition, subtraction, multiplication and divisionare unicorn horns and fairy dust.
On April 26, I posted an article on the Chevy volt titled
An Explosive Automotive Debut. In that article (
here) I did a bit of mathalways dangerous for an English majorand discovered that even if a Chevy Volt managed 200 MPG, it would take 14 years to break even by means of fuel savings on the difference in purchase price over a comparably equipped, high-mileage conventionally powered vehicle.
It would seem to make sense that a green technology wonder car getting 41 MPG, compared to a comparable model getting only 23 MPG would save money on fuel, and so it would if those two numbers were the only parts of the equation. When we consider the fact that hybrid, hybrid/electric and electric cars cost considerably more than their conventionally propelled competitors, all of the promised efficiency and fuel savings vanish. The Obamite sycophants haven't mentioned that? No? Well then. As a public service, let's return to Mrs. McGillicuddy's third grade classroom and practice a little elementary mathematics.

I don't understand the problem. I just purchased a current technology, in fact long standing technology, vehicle that routinely achieves in excess of 38 mpg in town and over 45 mpg hi way. Cost, well equipped, in the $27,000 range. And does 0-60 in the 8-9 sec. range.
I have no problems finding fuel, it's clean, has a drive train expectation of over 200,000 miles, a 10 year plus lifetime, and the only engine maintenance needed is oil and filter changes (first 3 years included in base price). And the technology moves more tonnage than any other current technology.
It's a diesel. Of course it's not made in America, not because we couldn't but because we don't want to rock the political "green" boat. Or does it? Let's see. High ethanol fuels have driven the cost of corn sky-high, contributes to engine failure and don't seem to provide any realistic savings. You've already shown that hybrids and electrics are not economical. Diesel is the cheapest petroleum fraction product, could be reasonably produced from biological waste - sell the corn for food and use the stalks to produce diesel fuel, recycle used cooking oils, etc.
Is it an ideal solution? Perhaps not, but we have the existing infrastructure to get to market. We have the capability to manufacture the engine. My vehicle is not "smelly", it's not "noisy", and it's not subject to dieing by the side of the road because the batteries are "dead".
And the car - it's a VW Gof TDI. The same drive train is available as a Jetta, or in the Audi marque. I first drove one of these 7-8 years ago in Europe where diesel fuel and bio-desiel is readily available - and is the least expensive fuel avaialble.

Don't forget that hybrids also have battery packs that might cost $5K - $10K to replace, and no one knows how long they will last in real life. Some makers have warranties, prorated, of course.
A hybrid has only two advantages: first, the IC engine can run at it's most efficient speed to charge the battery, IF the car is designed to always run on electric power. If the engine drives the car directly at any time, the advantage is lost then. Second, regenerative braking - which is why hybrid city mileage is so good. Driving one of these on a long trip on flat land pretty much erases the advantage.
Diesels make a whole lot more sense - you can literally grow your own fuel.
What I don't get is why no one so far has offered a Diesel hybrid. With a reliable battery, that might be something I would be interested in

Unfortunate that we can't compare maintenance costs and reliability. A basic rule in engineerings is that an overall systems reliability is the multiplication of the reliability of every part in the system. Hybrids are more complex, more stuff to break. I suspect that the maintenance costs will be higher for the hybrid with lower reliability.

Don't forget to add in Insurance and Taxes too. Maintenance will cut into that too, no doubt that Hybrids are more expensive to work on than conventional cars, plus they will have more expensive repair parts.

For me at least, due to the tax benefits we have here on hybrids, the choice was (on cost only) obvious.
A Civic hybrid costs me (as a lease car, corporate owned, I here pay a portion of the purchase price in income tax, which is a smaller portion than for non-hybrid cars) less than 100 Euro a month to drive. A similar priced diesel powered car (company won't let me select a regular gasoline powered car because of the price difference in fuel) would set me back abour 400 Euro a month.
For the company, the equation is of course reversed. That hybrid gets 45mpg on gasoline costing 1.65 Euro per liter. The diesel would get 55mpg on fuel costing 1.35 Euro per liter. It's not all bad though, the road taxes on the hybrid are 0, rather than several hundred Euro per quarter on the diesel, maybe (in part) compensating.
Don't you love unintended consequences? By subsidising hybrids they've pushed tens of thousands of corporate drivers (and that's the people driving the longest distances) into cars that use more fuel than the cars they used prior.

Joe Nocera, apparent survivor of literally thousands of Tea Party assassination attempts, bombings, beheadings, states that the real threat to the Republic is the, uh, American people:
You know what they say: Never negotiate with terrorists. It only encourages them.
These last few months, much of the country has watched in horror as the Tea Party Republicans have waged jihad on the American people. Their intransigent demands for deep spending cuts, coupled with their almost gleeful willingness to destroy one of Americas most invaluable assets, its full faith and credit, were incredibly irresponsible. But they didnt care. Their goal, they believed, was worth blowing up the country for, if that's what it took.
Unfortunately for Mr. Nocera, he and the rest of Amy Winehouse Left don't grasp basic principles most of us figured out in elementary school.
- You don't solve your cash flow problems by raising your credit limit. That only makes your inevitable bankruptcy that much more traumatic
- You don't cure an addiction by feeding it
The Tea Party legislators that the
Times would like to portray as radicals and terrorists are in fact the only adults in the room. The GOP in general and the Democratic Party in it's totality are committed to making our debt crisis worse by raising the debt limit, ensuring that the government will spend more money that it does not have, driving us deeper into debt and closer to an all but inevitable default.
It is the professional political class that are the terrorists that threaten to blow the Republic apart, driving a truckload of explosive debt into the heart of the nation.
Instead of trying to head off the debt, Nocera snipes at the brave few who are trying to stop the truck.
Don't be surprised. What else should you expect from a radical leftist government headed by a man mentored by a
real terrorist?

How things are done will be changed in the future; how laws are enacted and enforced, how the general public interacts with government and authority. We've seen how the sausage gets made, and it will alter how we deal with the sausage makers.

Let me provide the links to two articles I think you'll find very interesting:

In the first article, the author reports that:
"Using discipline records of nearly 1 million Texas middle and high school students that cover much of the last decade, researchers found that more than half of them were suspended or expelled at least once between 7th and 12th grades, that the punishments were applied unevenly among students of different races, abilities, and schools, and that students disciplined with these methods were more likely to repeat a grade or drop out of school than students who were not punished in the same way."
The article suggests that " of the half a million times students were suspended or expelled, only 3 percent of those suspensions or expulsions were for behavior Texas law requires be punished that way."
The second article begins:
"A new undertaking from the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education targets school discipline policies that end up pushing children into the juvenile-justice system for crimes and rule-breaking on campusand keeping them from pursuing their education."
The author adds:
" Attorney General Eric Holder and Education Secretary Arne Duncan unveiled the Supportive School Discipline Initiative at a meeting of a Justice Department committee meeting Thursday afternoon.
'When our young people start getting locked up early... they start to move out of schools, out of the pipeline to success,' Mr. Duncan said."

I'm certain that the majority were in-house suspensions, since Texas funds schools based on student-attendance-days. Off-campus suspension doesn't count towards funding -- on campus does.

And as someone who was in a Texas high school between 90 and 94, this jumped out at me:
These articles obviously assume that the kids they're talking about are some kind of victims of evil school officials who only want to see them kicked out of school and locked up. They don't seem to realize or care that before a kid is subjected to such mild punishment as a day of OCS, they have already exhausted no less than 4-5 (sometimes more) lesser steps on the discipline scale and their behavior is so disruptive that they have to be removed from classes so other kids have the chance to learn.
In my experience, in-school suspension was the first level of discipline used by the majority of the non-teachers (principals) once they were involved. (My high school had four vice-principals for just under 4000 students. That's right at the designed capacity -- it's a huge school.) Second or third rounds involved in-school suspensions of upwards of 3-10 days. Essentially, to get sent off campus you had to be violent during the in-school suspension.
It isn't that they are evil school officials, with malice in their heart. It is that they are lazy and incompetent. The in-school suspensions they administered there (and which I thankfully managed to escape) caused real harm academically, because they were very flip about sending a student there for weeks at a time, forcing them to work without any real guidance from a teacher, stuck with the same faculty member all day -- and that faculty member was one who was essentially good for nothing but warehousing kids instead of teaching a class.
I think you may be underestimating the peculiar nature of the problem in Texas. It's the way things are run in the big urban and suburban districts, which is over half the students in Texas.

Yes, it is imperative that we send these men and their boss packing in 2012. Until then, fight holding actions. As a teacher, nothing sends chills down my spine more than the idea of Eric Holder inserting himself into the Texas education system.
Phelps, as a former student of and current teacher in Texas public schools, I never witnessed anything approaching that described by the government "study." While individual schools may do things better or worse then their peers, bringing the jackboot of the Federal government down on the neck of school officials is one sure-fire way to further demoralize public educators. The Federal jackboot will also increase the flight from public schools as parents recoil in horror from the increasing impunity of school age thugs to run their operations in the halls of dear old Public High. Anybody who doubts that future has has closed his eyes to the effects of government social beneficence.

The Fed gov spends @3.5T, which is @1.5T more than it brings in (@2T) while already being 14.5T in debt. People are elected to say stop and they're called terroist.
The fed gov is unsustainable, redundant, and it needs to be reduced (@1.5T/yr). Power needs to be moved to the state/local govs which already perform most necessary functions.

Exactly what has anyone won? We had an extension of the debt, that we didn't want. We have had insigficant cuts to the budget, nothing real, when we wanted a sizable decrease in spending. Taxes are going up one way or another, which we don't want and which will kill any recovery to the economy. If anything is cut, it will be defense and medicare, which we didn't want. What about elimination of most of the cabinent and most regulatory agenices? What about our light bulbs? What about Obmamcare?

ATF Wouldn't Arrest Gun-Happy Felon, and So He Strikes Again
Anyone who has followed this blog, Pajamas Media, and the gun blog for any length of time knows that I've been investigating a felon by the name of Lee Franklin Booth since late last year. I've tried to warn that he's a dangerous criminal that needs to be put away. The federal government apparently thought he would be a useful criminal informant.
I guess that isn't a secret anymore, but the feds have refused to bring Booth down.
Well, such negligence has consequences, and Mr. Booth apparently took another crack at trying to kill someone in the past couple of weeks.
I'll report on this more as the story develops.

quite possibly, professor. It looks like legalese for "we don't know what to do with him, so we charge him with something, anything, and cover our tracks later".
We all know our host here has an unhealthy obsession with Mr. Booth and his history with the law. I wonder if he knows what really happened here and if so why he keeps it quiet.
IMO the entire "once you have a conviction for anything you can never again own a weapon to defend yourself" is blatantly wrong. Legally wrong, ethically wrong, and constitutionally wrong.
It effectively violates the constitution where it states that "to keep and bear arms cannot be denied".
It violates ethics in that you make people easy victims for criminals.
It violates law in that you effectively turn any penalty (including potentially a parking ticket even) into a life sentence without possibility of appeal, and worse yet, make that a federal sentence.
"assault with a deadly weapon" is one of those catch-all phrases anyway. If you're in a barfight and happen to be holding a beer stein which you use to hit someone on the head, you can be charged with it because it could indeed cause serious, even life threatening, injuries.
If noone got seriously hurt, it would likely be written off as a misdemeanor, handled by a fine and having to pay for repairs to the bar and a bandage for the person you gave a bloody nose.

yI remember when we used to have legislation. Bills would pass in congress and get signed into law. Now we just have "deals". Deals enable the governemnt to continue record spending without anyone being held accountable for voting for it. Those previous 230+ years of politicians must have been chumps for not thinking of this earlier.

No deal should have ever happened. We will not see real reductions until a real balanced budget amendment without gimmicks and with prohibitions against federal mandates to states.
I suppose reducing the US credit to junk bonds status might also suffice.
Until then the juggernaut has only one way to go, forward or bigger. The only control is "how fast". And if it's "not as fast as projected" it gets declared as money saved.
