IntroComp Interactive Fiction

Hey, do you write IF? Actually, I'm guessing most of my good readers don't even know what I'm talking about when I refer to "IF." No, it's not "if," the word you use to precede a comparison to make a decision. It's I.F. as in "interactive fiction." Still no clue, huh?

Well, while Wikipedia is quite often a total cesspool, when it comes to specific, non-political issues, they do sometimes have good information:

Interactive fiction, often abbreviated IF, describes software simulating environments in which players use text commands to control characters and influence the environment. Works in this form can be understood as literary narratives and as computer games. In common usage, the word refers to text adventures, a type of adventure game with text-based input and output.

Yeah, it's a text-based computer game. The most classic and grandfather of all of these is "Adventure." XYZZY? Remember that one? I sure do.

Well, all that done now, the reason I'm talking about all this is that I just found out there's to be another Interactive Fiction Competition. It's really neat stuff and actually VERY simple to create -- check out TADS if you want a simple way to make your own text adventure game -- and then you can join in the competition!

1 every time i've tried IF I wind up closing the story...meaning nobody posts after me, so no, I don't do that anymore.

2 No, no, that's not it. With THIS type of interactive fiction, the author writes the entire story with clues and puzzles while the readers of the fiction actually try and figure out the fiction by playing a game!

3 Oh.... I'll give it a shot when politics don't take up so much time.

4 It's fun making the plan. But when politics don't take much time? Don't hold your breath...

5 LOL... well maybe I should say when the boys are in school? I keep them during the day and between them and politics there's not much time for anything else, including writing. I've got several projects on hold right now because this junk we're blogging is just too important to ignore.

6 AH, it's just politics. That, too, will pass...
