Government Accountability

The communist government of Charlotte, the Charlotte City Council, last night decided what they would permit to be built on certain land spaces. As part of the royal decrees, they would also give away lots of tax dollars to private companies because they want to.

Meanwhile, Jerry Reese has filed a lawsuit to stop the giveaways, claiming they are illegal. In that lawsuit, he points out that the original money used to pay for the land that's being given away very specifically stated that the land could NOT be used for a baseball stadium (really, it says those exact words).

What I'm wondering is how perpetual is government? That bond was passed in 2004. There have been elections since that time. So is government allowed to change it's mind once new people have been elected? That's what the lawsuit will help determine. If the lawsuit succeeds, then the judges will have decided that any government can overrule any previous government obligations and decisions. But if it fails, then the judges will have decided that any government is completely bound by any decisions of any previous elected officials. Interesting...
