Democrats and War Funding

Obviously, there has been quite a bit of news lately about the Democrats and their alleged "war funding bill." And, since it has to do with politics, there's been lots of lies and half-truths. I'd like to make a couple things clear about how a Democratic form of government works.

One part of that bill is absolutely unconstitutional. The Democrats clearly, according to the US Constitution, cannot set a time, date, or place to withdraw the troops. That's not their job. In fact, if the bill passed into law, if there were judges who actually interpreted the Constitution, I could see them invalidating that portion of the law because Congress cannot (despite what the Democrats believe) simply pass a law and have it happen. The Democrats don't know it, but they're not God.

However, the funding portion of the bill IS perfectly constitutional. Staying at war in a republic is supposed to be very difficult. One person, the president, is not supposed to have the power to keep a country at war indefinately -- he's GOT to have cooperation from the people and their representatives (the Congress). If they don't agree, then there's no war. However, the Democrats are going about this the wrong (unconstitutional) way.

If the Democrats want to stop the war, they DO have the absolute power to stop it. They can simply defund it. That is absolutely and completely in their power. All they have to do is pass a bill that does not allot the funds to pay for the troops. That would be constitutional. That would effectively stop and end the war because the president wouldn't have the money to continue the war. And, if the Democrats honestly believed that the people of the country wanted an end to the war, that is the bill they would pass.

Unfortunately, the Democrats aren't interested in results. They apparently don't believe their own words when they claim that the American people want an end to the war. If they want to end it, stop funding it, period. Pass a clean bill that has nothing in it but funding for the war. Then we wouldn't have all the politics associated with the current bill. Just defund it -- if you really want to end it. The fact that they won't defund it shows that they're not really serious about wanting to end the war -- instead they simply are running for election and they see this as a way to get the most votes.

That's really sad, but yes, the current bills and votes in Congress are all about getting votes for the next election -- at the expense of our troops and our national security.
