Jessica’s Law and North Carolina General Assembly
Last year, Representative Howard (R) brought the same basic bill and could not get it heard or out of committee, due to Representative Jennifer Weiss (Dem) and Former House Speaker Jim Black blockage.
Representative Tim Moore (R) introduced HB 933/ Jessica Lunsford Act for North Carolina this year. Presently, HB 933 / Jessica Lunsford Act for North Carolina is Re-ref to the Com on Judiciary II and, if favorable, to the Com on Appropriations. There is still opposition to this bill from various committee members, as well as members of the North Carolina General Assembly. It seems that a few members of our legislate feel, that the cost of this bill, is too much. It is apparent money is more important than, the worth our children’s future and wellbeing.
The cost of Law Enforcement, GPS Tracking, Courts and Prisons are too much for the state budget. We say, “Cut the fat! Rather spend on pet projects and guilt trips (Apologies for Slavery, Smoking Bans, Trans Fat Bans, etc.) focus!” The excuses coming from our representatives are pathetic rather than looking at facts; they rather tell you why they cannot do something. However, they certainly can find the time and funding for other things. Presently our state lawmakers are inconclusive towards Jessica's Law. If our lawmakers would take the following steps, it would be a step in right direction.
North Carolina Lawmakers need to take a stand and apply the needed differences to have Jessica’s Law fully inducted.
North Carolina Lawmakers should take advantage of the Adam Walsh Act and use the monetary bonus payment available to those states complying with the act sooner than its three-year timeline. Rather than a 10 percent reduction in Justice Assistance Grants and certain reductions of Sex Offender Management Assistance Program monies for those states that do not comply with Adam Walsh Act.
If our state leaders would take care of business, rather than trying to be Political Correct, things would be different. Our leaders are too busy worrying about slavery from 200 years ago or banning smoking. What is wrong with this picture? How about worrying about our children’s future rather than the past? What a lack of common sense!
