GOP Presidential Debate

Wow. NINE candidates will be gathering May 3rd for a Republican presidential debate. In MAY. THIS YEAR. Is this the earliest primary presidential debate ever? It sure seems like it. Man, how worn out is everyone going to be come election time?

Here's the list of invited candidates:

Sen. Sam Brownback (Kan.)
former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore
former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani
former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee
Rep. Duncan Hunter (Calif.)
Sen. John McCain (Ariz.)
Rep. Ron Paul (Texas)
former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney
former Wisconsin governor Tommy G. Thompson

Now that's an odd collection, if I've ever seen one. The two that the press have already crowned winners are there: Romney and Giuliani. Duncan Hunter, a conservative, is there. But Ron Paul? How the heck did he get invited? I like a lot of his positions, but he's almost a.. a.. libertarian! I can't believe they invited him.

At the same time, Tom Tancredo isn't there. And neither is the new dark horse, Fred Thompson. There's no word that these two were invited and refused, the article just lists those who were invited. I predict now that MSNBC, one of the hosts of the "debate," will declare John McCain the clear winner...before the debate even happens.

1 FD Thompson isn't formally declared yet. I believe he will though he's playing his cards close to his chest.

I think it's funny that they are already trying a smear campaign against him that ain't working too well so far.

Tancredo's got a long way to go to catch up. He's not being polled yet but that could be a godo thing.

2 i swear, im so tired of hearing about the presidential election that is a full year and a half away... we have an enemy out there that has not wained in their war against us and we sit around bickering about who will lead us in 2009... its ridiculous...

that said, i cant wait to see Hillary loose...

btw, i actually started posting on my site again Ogre... i was really bored at work...

3 Jim Gilmore hasn't officially declared, either. In fact, Tancredo is the ONLY candidate who has officially filed with the FEC that wasn't invited. Yeah, I think it's on purpose because they don't want his ideas in the debate. The Republican "leadership" doesn't want him and they don't want to talk about illegal immigration.

Chris, I agree. The only consolation I have is that the more they TALK about crap, the less they take my freedoms away.

4 I hope Fred Thompson runs. I might actually be able to get behind a candidate.

5 What does Thompson bring to the table that the others don't have?

Isn't anyone worried that he'll be representing Hollywood elites?

6 "Isn't anyone worried that he'll be representing Hollywood elites?"

Nope. However, having lived in TN under his Senate leadership, I have a little different perspective. Given his background, he's not really an actor (although I'm not saying he can't act because he is okay at that, too). Most, if not all the parts he's ever played are parts he's well familiar with in real life. He never really took his hand out of D.C. politics, either, having sat with Roberts for the Supreme Court hearings among other things he has done.

The primaries begin in less than a year, so I'm a little worried about those because I don't want to get stuck with someone I can't vote for on any side, Dem., Rep, Ind., and so on. I really love Tancredo, but it looks like not enough other people do so I'm basically looking for somebody everybody else can live with... if that makes sense.

7 Well, I'm sticking with Tancredo right now. If he does drop out, then I'll consider who's left to support. I don't know a whole lot about some of the others' positions, but they don't really matter right now-- Tancredo is right on the positions that matter. Hey, everyone go vote in my little Pajamas media voting center (back on the right side of the main page), if you would. Thanks!

8 What about Pat Buchannan? You always know where he stands and he's probably not going to invade the wrong country after we're attacked.

I like his economic views (anti-"free trade") and his views on avoiding foreign entanglements.

9 Is he running? I haven't heard anything about him this time.

10 I'm going to this conference in a couple of weeks - http://www.nercouncil.com/2007issuesconf.html

Pretty much the same line-up will be there to meet in person. So far, I've only met Guiliani, McCain and Romney so I'm looking forward to meeting the rest.

11 Think you'll actually get to talk to any of them? I'd love to ask them questions about illegal immigrants...

12 Hre's the deal. NOBODY wants to schlep around tiny NE states, except for New Hampshire. BUT - they can hit all the activists in one place at this thing, which is a recurring event. In 2000, I met Bush, Forbes, Keyes and McCain. Wound up backing Bush.

Ogre - email questions via the email on my web site, and I will get all of them answered.

BTW - forgot to say that Newt will be there as well.

13 Neat. You must have connections. I'm having Lunch with Rudy in a couple weeks -- along with 500 other people...so I will likely just get pictures...
