Taxpayer Cash: Free Distributions

Your taxpayer cash is being used to settle a lawsuit -- which you had nothing to do with. Did you learn your lesson? You're being punished. Do you promise not to do it again?

I think we need to pass a law that limits lawsuits against governments. It doesn't make one bit of sense. In this case, 3 students have been awarded a pile of cash for the actions of a school. And it's punitive damages (even though it's a "settlement") -- in other words, the cash is being transferred from one party to another as punishment and an attempt to teach the people who did wrong a lesson. The only problem is that the people who are paying the money aren't paying their own money!

The school board honestly doesn't care one bit about this lawsuit. They're not paying one dime out of their pocket. Sure, they might complain a little bit, but they really don't mind. After all, if they don't have enough money, they'll just take some more from the taxpayer! There's no possible way they can learn a lesson from this punishment. It's just downright dumb.

A new law should be passed that says government is immune from fines. They should not ever be forced to pay out any cash other than ACTUAL damages -- because it's not their damn money. PEOPLE are being punished when actions like this take place. WORKING people have to pay that money, not the members of the government.

Of course, if a law like this ever went into effect, the ACLU's budget would drop by about 90% because their primary source of income is filing lawsuits against government.

That alone s reason enough for such a law.

I'd also favor one that says the loser of any suit pays all court and lawyer fees--for both parties.

2 I LOVE loser pays laws -- but there's way, way, way, WAY too many slimy lawyers in legislatures to ever even dream of that happening.
