Another perennial candidate has changed his position for this election to attempt to collect some votes. And in doing so, John McCain has decided that he can win without any Democrat votes.
You see, McCain came out and said that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. That's a litmus test for Democrats -- you're not allowed in the party if you oppose abortion in any way at any time. Not one party-line Democrat will dare to vote for McCain now.
Even more interesting, McCain didn't say WHY he thought it should be overturned. It would be interesting to know if he thinks it should be overturned because murdering innocent babies is wrong, or if it's because the federal government doesn't actually have the right to overrule states on such matters (well, according to the Constitution, even if not according to the judicial branch).

McCain just lost half his potential votes...he was popular with many of the Lemoncrats.

Absolutely. This move is an attempt by him to win the religious conservatives -- and he's hoping the Defeatocrats will forget about his position on abortion by the time the general election comes around -- which might be a good guess...

I guess this is why political tests always tack a social edge on my scores. I'm pro-choice. However, there are qualifiers. I don't think the government, insurance, or any one but the person making that choice should pay for it, except in terms of life threatening illness, rape, incest, or child molestation cases. A girl can get pregnant as early as nine, you know. As for the rest, if they want to kill their babies, that's their call but it's between them and their maker. One day they'll answer for it to the Big Guy.
But in all cases except life threatening illnesses, I'd advocate the death penalty for those who commit the crimes that cause such abortions to be necessary. Reform rates are too abysmal to throw money into trying and you can't let them loose on the rest of the world either.

Of course, the Constitution does not grant the Supreme Court any power to actually determine whether abortion is legal or not. But they don't seem to mind taking power whenever they want it.
And in the vast majority of abortions, it is because the baby was "unwanted" -- it's used as birth control NINETY-THREE percent of the time in America.
