NC on Stem Cells
300,000 people in Western North Carolina have weighed in (subscription required - use BugMeNot) on their opinion on government spending: they don't want more of it.
Now while even those involved in this action -- Catholics -- are framing this as a personal choice and morality issue, it really isn't. Their entire reason for opposing the proposed law this year is because of the value they place upon life:There's never any justifiable reason to take a human life, even if it is in the very (early) stages of human life, because the embryo has a genetic makeup distinct from the mother, distinct from the father ? a human being has come into existence
That's all fine and good. But if you oppose them and support the proposed law because you think that there should be research on stem cells, you're just wrong. The law isn't about allowing or banning ANYTHING. The law, if passed, does not make research on stem cells legal. If the law doesn't pass, it doesn't make research illegal. Instead, as with the national level, this is about government spending. The law would actually increase GOVERNMENT SPENDING on research with stem cells. Keep in mind all the various diseases that have been eliminated from stem cell research:
And keep in mind, NO ONE is stopping ANYONE from actually doing this research. If you want to research using stem cells, YOU GO AHEAD. There is no government or government agency that will stop you in any way, shape or form. Instead, what this is about is SPENDING MONEY. And it's MY money that you're spending if you support this bill. Say what you want about the actual research, but at least be honest when you talk about supporting the bill. If you support this bill, you support increased spending by government, plain and simple.

This doesn't make sense from a fiscal viewpoint at all. Embryonic stem cell research has been a rat hole. There has not been one single advancement from this line of study. On the other hand, there have been MANY advances from the other lines. Results matter. Let's not waste more taxpayers money on failed programs with great sounding names.

Exactly right, David. From a fiscal point, this makes absolutely no sense. But that's not the view that the Democrats take.
In order to get stem cells, they need to kill babies. So they support stem cell research, regardless of anything else. In the mind of the Democrat, abortion is the holy grail and must be supported at all costs at all times.

As a scientist, I do not ever like the "there's been no sufficient developments, so we should can the general research" arguments. That's short sighted.
However, the gubmint should stay out of embryonic stem-cell funding. There are too many people who are opposed to it to force them to fund it.
And there are enough rich folks out there who would fund it, out of a sense of moral and intellectual superiority.
My real question is, why are common sense and government such diametrically opposing terms?

Absolutely correct -- if this research has potential, there will be enormous piles of money thrown at it -- and it won't be government money (and shouldn't be).
Common sense goes out the window because the vast majority in government absolutely refuse to understand that it's not their money they are spending. They see it as their own money and they are obligated to spend as much as they can.
