New Neighbor #42

A year or more ago, I had started a Sunday feature called "New Neighbors." Each Sunday I would go down the blogroll over on the right (on the main page) started by Joe Carter of The Evangelical Outpost listed as "Evangelicals". In one of his posts, he suggested that those of us on the blogroll get to know one another. In that vein, I started reading and following various blogs, and added each one as I read it to my own blogroll (also on the right side of the main page) called "Introduced Neighbors."

I kept this up for almost a year -- from Neighbor #1 to #41. However, if you check that blogroll now, you will find that there's only 28 neighbors on the list. That's because when I did my blogroll cleaning last week, I found a lot of them had stopped posting for one reason or another. I had stopped doing the neighbors feature on Sundays because I had started putting a different value on Sundays and had other plans.

With the new layout and the new year come changes. And one of those changes will be to re-start the neighbor feature on Sundays. I won't be going in any particular order, nor will I only highlight "big" blogs. Instead, each week I'll just pick a random blog from that list and check it out and highlight it here. Those of you looking for some Sunday afternoon easy reading can be sure to check in here each week, as the posts will go up between noon and 1pm EST each week starting, well, now!

New Neighbor #42 is:

All Things 2 All

This blog is located in N.Z. (Narnia Zone, aka New Zealand) and run by Catez Stevens. She has a wide variety of interests, from poetry to molecular biology to surfing to Sudan. And she lists one of the best all-time movies as one of her favorites: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Now this blog isn't one of those like Ogre's that is updated many times a day. Instead, All Things 2 All appears to be updated about once a week (sometimes less often). But the posts that do appear seem to be rather interesting and informative.

There is one post that looks at the life of Leslie Van Houten. Do you recognize that name? I know I knew the name, but couldn't remember why. As soon as I started reading the post, I remembered why that name was familiar. I bet you will, too.

To show the wide variety of posts, the next post after Ms. Van Houten's was a rather long and detailed review of The Nativity Story move. I hadn't seen the movie and if you haven't, this review might help make you decide if you want to see it or not.

And while many blogs have "tip jars" or other ways that you can contribute to the author, this blog is a bit more interesting. Instead of having a "tip jar" for the author of the blog, she instead asks you to send your donations to help the people of Darfur, Sudan.

That's a neat idea, I think I shall have to add something like that. But I think I will direct my donations to either the Samaritan's Purse, a group I know does extremely good works; or to a charity suggested by good friend, Heifer International. I did most of my Christmas shopping there this year.

So if you've got some time this lazy Sunday afternoon, why not head over to All Things 2 All and say hello?

3 Ogre,

I have been to, and commented at, your site before... I seem to remember that, at one point, you tried out doing a horizontal-scrolling weblog format - I can understand why that didn't turn out too well! :-)

Incidentally, an issue related to what you alluded to in this entry is what I wanted to comment here about. Actually, I wanted to refer you to this comment that I just posted at Mr. Minority's latest entry.

In the prior Haloscan comment that I link to there, your comment was the first in that thread, after Mr. Minority's response to mine.

I also remember that your comment was perhaps the first, in rebuttal to an entry by Beth at the 'Bamapachyderm' (sp?) weblog, some while ago; it was neat, because you rebutted her GOP partisan viewpoint, about how conservatives should stop complaining about President Bush and the GOP leadership.

I remember commenting at another site how Beth's weblog was one of the "new" sites that had entered the Blogosphere (something that was happening a lot, in contrast to a couple of years earlier when I began my weblog, and most people didn't know what "blog" meant)... But now, it appears that 'Bamapachyderm' seems like an older blog, and I don't even know if it is sitll up. (Then again, I don't know about many of the weblogs, having been out of it, not just in the past few months, but at intermittent points during the past several years. I wish there was more time, for the Blogosphere...)

I was going to post something here, referring to those two 'Mr. Minority' Haloscan threads, the older of which led me back to your site (which I am glad is still up and running!)... However the issues alluded to in this entry re-emphasizes how frustrating for me it has been, to see how so much good and insightful content on the web keeps changing, or disappearing, as years go by. It would be nice if the past comment discussions that we've been involved with, and the past entries at sites in the Blogosphere, would remain up and intact (even if those sites are no longer being regularly updated).

I know that these sentiments may seem odd... But I am one who very much does not like change.

Having been out of the loop, I was unaware of this 'New Neighbors' feature, which is unfortunate, considering that you started it "a year or more ago." Also, the thing is, it was maybe three years ago that I was regularly checking my 'Truth Laid Bear' Ecosystem page, and my it was maybe two years ago (maybe more recently, though it seems further back) that I was regularly checking my weblog's Technorati page. It really sucks not being able spend more time in the Blogosphere, like has been done in the past.

This is all related to what day it is today, and how it clearly shows that time is passing. I want to wish you and yours, and the readers of your fine site, a very Happy New Year!! Hopefully, this year will be one in which those who have had success can continue with these processes, or even step it up, while those who have had serious setbacks can take things back.

4 Thanks for stopping back again! I like the horizontal layout, but it was too confusing for people who expected to just scroll down and see stuff. And it was quite the challenge to get in place, let me tell you!

I think this blog was started in about August, 2002, or thereabouts. That's a lot of writing over the years, because it's pretty much been postings every day. Over 2,200 entries at this site, and at least a thousand at the previous location -- whew!

And yes, blogs move fast -- much faster than life, I think. If I remember correctly, the "New Neighbor" feature ended about 15 months ago, and it had been running for 43 weeks before that!

So thanks for your New Year's Wishes, and I hope that your new year is prosperous and happy!
