Easley Raises Gas Tax
In case you were wondering North Carolina Governor Mike Easley's position on rising gas taxes, he completely supports them. On January 1, because of the prices after Katrina, the gas tax in North Carolina will increase by 10%.
This is because the Democrat NC Legislature put into effect a law that automatically raises the gas tax whenever the wholesale cost of gas increases. This also affects home heating oil. The gas tax is now 27.1 cents per gallon -- the highest in the Southeast. Some legislators from western North Carolina asked Governor Easley for a break for low-income people and citizens in general on this tax increase. Easley told them to talk a long walk off a short pier. The governor's spokesman gave a typical government answer -- it would provide little savings to people and "cost" The all-powerful State a lot. Strangely enough, the Democrats who are publicly asking for the break are mostly Democrats. I strongly suspect they knew that this would go nowhere, so they were safe in asking for it. If they honestly wanted to reduce taxes, the NC Democrats would throw them out of the party.
