(OK, so I'm a day late. I won't have a problem getting this one done, since I started it on time AND it's a short book.) This week's book is The Way of the Christian Samurai by Paul Nowak.
The book has generated some controversy among people who focus on the less savory aspects of the samurai way of life, and who seem to have missed the point of the book. But more on that Sunday, when I review the book.
Tomorrow is the Feast of Epiphany. And I've always figured that Epiphany was a celebration of the birth of Christ, kind of an Eastern Orthodox Christmas celebration.
But in researching the holiday for this post, I learned something. Originally (and by that I'm talking middle 4th century), January 6th was the Feast of the Nativity. St. Epiphanius says that the January 6 is hemera genethlion toutestin epiphanion -- Christ's "Birthday; that is, His Epiphany." So January 6th is the first celebration of Christmas -- the December 25th date came as a result of the change to the Gregorian calendar, it seems.
Interestingly, we also read of some early indications that the early Eastern church celebrated Christ's baptism and nativity on the same day(St. Clement of Alexandria in Stromateis, I, xxi, 45, for one example). The practice continues, as many Orthodox churches celebrate Epiphany as the Theophany -- the revelation of Christ as God's Son, which happened at His baptism.
The West celebrates the arrival of the Magi on January 6th. By 534, the Nativity and the Epiphany were separate celebrations in the West, but the traditional worship on the 6th was too strong, it seems. Interestingly, both holy days commemorate the same thing -- the mystery of the Incarnation -- but do it in different ways.
Of course, if you're in Louisiana, Epiphany is the beginning of the Mardi Gras season. So start baking those King Cakes (and send me one, too!).
I received a copy of SwordSearcher 5 recently to review, and I've been putting it through its paces. There's a lot to like about the package. But it also falls short in a few areas.
One of my favorite aspect of SwordSearcher is the library. It's nothing compared to the Libronix library, of course, but it doesn't cost nearly as much. Andrew Miller's Church History is included, as well as Osborn's Classbook of Biblical History and Geography. There's also a selection of Great Preaching of the Faith, which includes sermons from a diverse group of preachers, including Edwards, Calvin, Finney, and Torrey. There's also over 700 sermons from Spurgeon. Many of the commentaries in the package are already available elsewhere, as are the dictionaries. For a full list of resources, check the web page.
One thing I really like in SwordSearcher is the 'Deep Referencing' links feature. Next to each verse in the Bible pane are links to the various resources that reference that verse. This makes in depth study of verses much easier to do. There's also a paragraph option available in the Bible pane, though selecting this option disables the deep referencing links.
My main Bible software package is e-Sword. I picked it because it was free, and easy to use. SwordSearcher is just as easy to use, and includes some features that e-Sword doesn't have (like the whole library search, and the deep referencing links). e-Sword does have one thing going for it, though -- it has a wealth of Bibles available. 8 are available with purchase (Amplified, Complete Jewish, HCSB, Message, NASB study set, NKJV, NLT, and the NIV family bundle). There are 26 available English translations for free (not gonna list them all). There are 10 original language editions, PLUS the Latin Vulgate. And a horde of foreign language translations.
Unfortunately, this is where SwordSearcher lets me down. 12 English Bibles (4 of which are King James editions, and three more of which are historic English translations like Bishops and Tyndale's). 2 Greek (no Septuagint, no Hebrew). 4 foreign language -- Spanish, French, German, and Dutch. They have a response for this objection:
Requests for particular material in SwordSearcher, such as new Bible versions, modern commentaries, etc., are hard to fulfill because of licensing and copyright issues. For example, a certain publisher currently requires a five-figure upfront payment to license their popular Bible version, in addition to requiring per-copy royalty payments that cost more than a printed paperback version of their publication. Regardless of anyone's reasons for wanting or not wanting this kind of material in SwordSearcher, it is simply a moot point as long as these kinds of restrictions are in place.
Also, with Forge, any publisher can easily make their material available for SwordSearcher themselves. If a particular publisher has material you would like to see in SwordSearcher, you may want to contact them to let them know they could publish their material in SwordSearcher format without paying a penny in licensing fees.
However, feel free to email us letting us know what you would like to see in SwordSearcher. We are constantly seeking additional library material for the software, and if you know of a public-domain work that would be a good addition, let us know.
Forge is SwordSearcher's tool for importing large amounts of text into SwordSearcher. It allows you to import books that you own into SwordSearcher, so publishers CAN release their own stuff for the software. But the user can't create a file for their favorite translation and import it.
SwordSearcher costs $49.95. e-Sword is free. I'll hang on to SwordSearcher, just for some of the resources it offers that e-Sword doesn't, but it looks like e-Sword will still be my workhorse. Until someone donates the new edition of Bibleworks to me, of course.

I have no clue. It's in the source. It's hosted at a site that seems to be working. It should be there.
But it's not. And I doubt I'll have time to figure it out tomorrow. {sigh} Maybe by Sunday it will be back.
Or maybe I'll try out my GimpShop skills and see if I can make a new one.
{EDIT} It's back, and I haven't done anything to fix it. Must have been a hosting hiccup or something.
I'm paying more attention to politics lately. Maybe it's because I got so irritated at the "Religious Right" snubbing one of their own on the grounds that he "isn't electable." Huckabee was running neck and neck with Ron Paul for the most ignored candidate for the GOP nomination, until the CNN debate.
Do I think that it's the evangelical influence that got him the win in Iowa? Not really. Only 46% of evangelical voters in Iowa supported him. Half of Republican-voting evangelicals didn't support him! That's telling, to me. The evangelical block still isn't united behind one candidate.
Huckabee got 40% of women. 40% of "young" voters (under 30). 41% of voters making less than $30K a year. Where is CNN reporting on Huck's appeal to women? Or youth? Or the "financially disadvantaged" folks? (thanks to Michael Medved for the stats)
The answer is simple. It's easier to tell people that the former pastor won by appealing to his natural base (evangelicals) than to admit he's got a broader appeal than anyone thought he would. That a conservative populist message resonates with Republicans just as strongly as Obama's populist message dos with Democrats.
And many evangelicals are letting them "blame" us. We'll take the credit, because the GOP has marginalized us. We want to feel important again. And people of faith are supporting Huckabee. But not just traditional evangelical Protestants.
The fact is, Huck was outspent by Romney and he won anyway. Edwards was outspent by everyone and hit second for the Dems. I really think this is the election that will show everyone that the best candidate isn't always the one that spends the most money to get your vote. It's the one that deserves your vote.

What would you do if you had information about the next big terrorist attack on US soil? What if nobody believed you?
Back at the Podcast and New Media Expo in California, some folks got big, red envelopes with "Classified" written on them. Some folks at the show got a bit freaked out about the whole thing. ANd it got a LOT of attention.
Of course, as soon as I heard about it, I had a feeling I knew what was going on. When I went to redmonday.com, all there was was a login prompt. But I knew what to do -- I checked the page source code.
Sure enough, there was a password left there. Sloppy for a real encrypted site, but Standard Operating Procedure for an ARG. The page was a rabbit hole.
I won't go into a lot of depth explaining those terms here; if you're interested, the best place to start is Unfiction. The forums will show you what kinds of Alternate Reality Games are out there (and there are a LOT of them out there), and there are resources available to explain what's going on in the genre. In short, this Red Monday thing was a game -- a very well thought out game.
I started getting email from a guy named JC, who had uncovered something big. Something was going down on November 26, but nobody was sure what. And that started the adventure.
Encoded files, ECHELON intercepts, satellite photos of suspicious installations -- it was a wild ride. I spent three hours one day scouring Google Earth trying to match up one satellite photo. I spent fifteen minutes talking to JC on Skype, trying to persuade him that John Kerry wasn't the President (in the RM universe, Ohio went Kerry rather than Bush, and it changed the election). The game was intense, and great fun. But then, it was over -- of course, it ended November 26.
And the podcast began.
The game was a sort of viral ad for the podshow, you see. And that's nothing unusual; after all, the game that started the whole ARG craze was "The Beast" -- a viral ad for the movie A.I. And the podcast is quite good.
Produced by J. Marcus Xavier, the man behind the Silent Universe podcast, Red Monday takes us to a world where Los Angeles has been nuked. We figured that much out in the game, though it was in part totally by accident. And we were way off on who did it, and why. The entire 5 episodes are up online, and I recommend them to anyone who likes 24 or Jericho. In fact, there was some speculation in the game that the whole thing was a tie-in to Jericho and the "Tom Tooman" game that's been running in connection with that show.
My only complaint is that the mini-series ends in quite the cliffhanger. I'm thinking that part of the purpose of Red Monday is to give some of the backstory to Silent Universe, Xavier's other podcast. If so, thanks, JMX. Now get to work and make us more Silent Universe! And if not, we need more Red Monday. Some of us have gotten quite attached to the story.
I will be FAR away from a computer on New Years Day, and so I decided to announce three blog resolutions that I've been pondering for a while now.
ONE: I will be trying to revive the Mark Study and the This Week in Church History features. Both have languished, and both were enjoyable to write, so I'm trying to go back to them.
TWO: I will be reading and blogging a book every week. I've got a backlog of books I've received to review, and this will be a great way to get through the stack. They won't all be winners, and they won't all be Christian books. They may be books I've already read, but I will be reading them that week. I will announce each Sunday what book I'm reading and blogging, and by the following Saturday the review will be up. In some cases, the review here will be a link to the Blogcritics review -- if I get something through them, they get the exclusive review. It's how the site generates revenue, and it's the ethical thing to do even if they didn't ask us all to do it. But I get books through other avenues, and those reviews will go here first. I'm allowing for two or three weeks off, so count on 49 or 50 books this year, starting on January 6th.
THREE: I'm going to be posting a little about various Christian feast days throughout the year. I'm actually stealing this idea from my wife, and she MAY start a blog of her own dedicated to it, but I think it's a great idea. And since today's St. Stephen's Day, I think I'll start with the next post.
There's a common theme among my resolutions -- I want to post regularly. Once upon a time I was a Large Mammal in the TTLB ecosystem. Now, I doubt I'd even show up on the radar. In 2008, I want to change that. I want to get all my readers back, and I THINK I've got a schedule worked out so that can happen.
Just a quick shout, because I found someone who sort of agrees with me re: giving December 25 back to the pagans and celebrating Christ's birth another time. I still like January 6 (even though that's dangerously close to my birthday), but Rev. James Martin suggests June.
Here's my plan. First, we hand over December 25 to the corporations and let them have their way with it. Let Macy's, for example, tell us that the Christmas season starts not with Advent, but right after Halloween, since that's when they start decorating their stores anyway. Let Kohl's tell us that the appropriate way to begin Advent is not with the traditional evergreen wreath with four candles, but by camping out with surly crowds at 3 a.m. in front of their stores, so that you can buy an iPhone, or some other techno gadget you don't really need.
Give the corporations December 25. It will be our final Christmas present to them.
Reading the rest of the column, I can see some potential in this. No major holidays to compete with, so no "Happy Holidays" greetings that irritate so many people. And the idea of a Christmas barbecue is intriguing, to say the least. Christmas outside, presents under a real tree -- and not even an evergreen. Maybe a dogwood tree.
John Fea at the Religion in American History blog has a review of Frank Schaeffer's newest book, Crazy For God. He gives a better summery of the book than I do in my own review, and I agree with him that many people, evangelical or not, are going to read the book in the hopes of getting some good dirt on the Schaeffer family. There's little enough of that in the book, though -- Frank tends to paint his father as an intellectual who was used by the nascent Religious Right movement back in the '70s, and his mother as dutiful housewife who sometimes regretted her own missed opportunities. But we do read of Francis' temper, and Frank's own youthful indiscretions, so maybe there's something there for the gossip-mongers after all.
I really think, as I wrote at Blogcritics back in November, that the real value of the book is for Christians, especially Christian leaders. Frank was thrust into a role that he really wasn't cut out for -- he was the heir apparent to his father's ministry. It didn't matter that he enjoyed art, and was a skilled painter and movie maker; he was called to carry on the family business.
Unfortunately, it seems he was called by humans, not by God. And when you enter a ministry without the calling of God on your life, you will not succeed. It seems that now Frank has found his true 'calling' in life; unfortunately, he lost his faith in the process.
1
Actually, I disagree. Frank wasn't called upon to carry on the family business at all. Sure, he joined the lecture circuit, but that was all due to his work as filmmaker. His parents didn't thrust him into anything - in fact, HE thrust his father into the more prominent public role through the film series.
His sisters, along with their husbands, were active in L'Abri. Prisca and John at Swiss L'Abri, Debby and Udo at Swiss L'Abri, and Susan and Ranald who founded English L'Abri. Tho Franky was put on the payroll for a few months when he was first married, he and Genie certainly were not regular workers who tutored and counseled students, gave lectures, had students into their home for meals which they hosted, etc.
Everybody DID care about his art. Through his parents' connections he was able to have some art gallery openings. And his parents viewed his filmmaking as continuation of his desire to be an artist. As did Frank.

I didn't say that his parents put him there. I think that once his father was in the spotlight (and I agree that Frank did a lot to put his father in that position), the people who were benefiting from it wanted to make sure that the Schaeffer ministry would continue after Francis was gone, and they saw that Frank could be molded. So they molded him.
When I started the book, I was really looking for reasons to not like it. There are plenty of things that Frank mentions that I think could have been left out, but the book really didn't anger me as much as I thought it would. Maybe because I wasn't exposed to Francis Schaeffer's teachings until later in my Christian life, so I didn't have any real emotional attachment to him or L'Abri. I think that the book can teach us a lot about making sure the people we put into positions of importance are actually the people that God has for those positions, and not the people we want there because of who their family is.

I heard Frank speak on NPR today and was very impressed. It was an excellent hour-long interview with Chris Boyd. I would not say he has lost his faith; he now belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church. I would also say that if and when he does lose his faith, it will be because he can no longer reconcile the truth of the facts of this world and the misinformation he received as a youth. I contend he has seen the light and recognizes how he helped the religious right destroy America.
Posted by: Cindy at February 18, 2008 07:04 PM (WKZiq)

Well, Cindy, I of course disagree with the idea that he received "misinformation" as a youth. I think that if you study what Francis Schaeffer wrote you see someone who approaches matters of faith in the most rational way possible. And when I say that he "lost his faith" I guess I was talking more about any semblance of an evangelical heritage he once had -- probably not the best choice of words on my part. From what I've read, he's pretty active in his Greek Orthodox church.
And of course I fail to see how encouraging people to vote according to their beliefs and values is destroying America. Last time I checked, voting for or against people based on our own individual beliefs is encouraged around here, and is actually a basic principle of the American brand of government.

Does anyone know where Frankey Schaeffer lives now or how to get in touch with him?

I was reading, online, some of Frank's remarks in several interviews and my first response was that he sounds more like an overindulged person of about the age 25 or 30....certainly not someone who is in his mid fifties.
His attitude toward those who have disappointed him is very immature and "unChristian".
Frank seems to think that this is 'all about him'....this Christian journey.
His outting of sorts of his parents is wrong.
He is not honoring them or covering for them....it does not matter that visitors at L'Abri were or were not aware of their personal and marital foibles. It is unseemly and even bratty of him to take it upon himself to speak and write of those very personal things.....especially with his father gone and unable to refute anything.
I was also interested in Frank's repeating something which could just be considered hearsay as he did not hear it himself---that Billy Graham told Francis that he (Billy) was afraid of dying.
As a Christian who is NOT afraid of dying (and I'm in my 60's now and getting closer and closer to that day)it came to me that what Billy Graham *may* have meant and it was lost in the telling is something that I have heard said by several older, mature Christians who are established in and walking in Truth and who have spent their lives committed to serving Christ. They have occasionally said to me that they "fear" dying before they have truly reached their destiny that God had in mind when He put them on this earth. Their 'fear' is not death; rather, it is dying before they have completed their purposes in their destiny; that they may have missed something that God had for them; that they might die with serious regrets. One cannot imagine Billy Graham actually being afraid of anything, much less death. But one can imagine that someone with his zeal might fret that he has not gone the distance and run the good race and is fearful of not finishing well.

It is written in the Godblogger's Manual that every Godblogger has to post something about the "War On Christmas." I slacked off last year; in fact, there was only one post from me the entire month. The year before, I ranted about the commercialization of Christmas and the Feast of St. Nicholas. My very first year of blogging, I wrote this, which I still think is pretty good.
This year, I'm going to talk about the whole Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas deal. Because it's getting tiresome, and old, and I think we need to get over the notion that we own the month of December, holiday-wise.
I weighed in on the whole TBN/SBC/tongues issue in the previous post, but today I found a couple articles that really made me thing more on this subject. Both are in my shared folder in Google Reader -- if I've got you in my contacts list through GMail, you can get it automatically. Otherwise, you can subscribe to the feed in your favorite RSS reader, or just check out this page. You can see the headlines in the graphic on the left sidebar, right under the calendar.
First up is Ed Stetzer's brief post concerning the use of Lifeway's research in the program. Swain Miller makes the statement that "LifeWay… this past summer... did a survey… and they reported that 51% of Southern Baptist pastors believe in speaking in tongues as one of the gifts… The truth is that there are more than half, I believe, of Southern Baptist pastors, anonymously surveyed… said they practice a private prayer language... but they were anonymous about it." If you read Lifeway's research, it doesn't make any assertion of personal practice on the part of anyone who participated. Only the beliefs of the people surveyed are mentioned. I think this is important because while someone may feel that tongues is a valid gift for today, they may or may not speak in tongues themselves. It's a distinction that is missing, I think, from the broadcast.
The second post I noted today is from Tim Rodgers at SBCToday. I think both of his illustrations are important for us to keep in mind -- especially the second, involving a fight between brothers.
Family fights can be very painful. It gets even more painful when the fight is brought out into public, and is even encouraged by people outside the family (who won't ever BE members of the family). And that's what happened on TBN last week. There has been a family squabble in the SBC over private prayer languages and tongues. We're dealing with it as a family. But now some members of the family have brought in folks from outside to try to end the fight -- and end it in their favor. The people they're bringing in aren't Southern Baptists, and don't 'have a dog in the fight.' But, to quote Richard Hogue at the very beginning of the segment, "I love a good controversy, don't you?" The purpose of the entire segment is to feed off controversy.
I have to confess, I enjoy heated debate and discussion. And as I've mentioned before, I have in the past sought out controversy for its own sake. So I can relate to Hogue's perspective on the issue. But one thing that I learned long ago is that when you seek out controversy for its own sake, or for the sake of your own enjoyment of controversy, nothing is resolved -- in fact, resolution is the exact opposite of what you want. You want the controversy, the conflict -- it's an adrenaline rush to be involved in something controversial.
That's why many people blog -- for the controversy. For the rush, the feedback, the attention (measured in trackbacks and comments, of course). But that attitude doesn't solve anything. Hogue's statement at the outset of the program set the tone, and it was clear from the beginning that the controversy would continue.
It was also clear that only one side of the debate would ever be presented. It's TBN, after all -- why would they bring on some cessationists to defend their position? Instead, the SBC is painted as a group that is trying to silence the voice of God in our generation, which is far from the truth. That kind of sentiment doesn't solve the problems that he SBC does have -- it simply sensationalizes a minor divide for others' entertainment and amusement.
It must be pleasant for the folks at TBN to have no controversies or conflicts of their own to deal with, that they have to entertain themselves by capitalizing on the disagreements of other Christians.
For a long time now, there has been a controversy in the SBC over private prayer languages. It all started when the IMB trustees decided to not commission any missionaries who prayed in a "private prayer language," which they felt contradicted traditional Southern Baptist positions. More than a few SBC bloggers felt that the trustees had gone well beyond their role at the IMB, and it led to a LOT of blogging on the subject.
At the time, I was one of the people upset with the trustees. I really had more of a problem with the idea of "alien baptism" than with the prayer language issue -- I wasn't baptized in a Southern Baptist church (it was FAR more conservative than any SBC church I've ever been in, actually), and I really thought that the trustees were trying to pass judgment on the validity of someone's conversion. I didn't view private prayer language as a really serious issue in the SBC, and I really still don't.
I do, however, have a philosophical and theological problem with the modern charismatic movement. Their tendency to place priority on personal experience over Biblical truth concerns me greatly -- there is so much potential for drastic theological error in a system where there is no accountability. How can anyone pass judgment on the validity of someone else's experience if those experiences aren't subject to Scriptural standards? I'm not a hardcore advocate of the Regulatory Principle, but I think that Scripture has to be the norm in our worship and practice. If I'm doing something in worship that is not Scriptural, I expect that my fellow believers will rebuke me and let me know the problem. They can't do that if my experience is the ultimate point of reference for my own spiritual life.
Hanna Rosen of The Atlantic has something interesting to say about Hollywood's latest "blockbuster," The Golden Compass.
Given enough time and effort, Hollywood can tweak and polish and recast even the darkest message until it would seem at home in a Fourth of July parade. In the end, the religious meaning of the book was obscured so thoroughly as to be essentially indecipherable. ... With $180 million at stake, the studio opted to kidnap the book’s body and leave behind its soul.
I haven't read the books (and don't really plan to, considering what the author's stated purpose in writing them is), and I doubt I'll see the movie. But I do think it's interesting, and a bit telling, that the books are so anti-religion in general and anti-Christian in particular that Hollywood has had to sanitize them to create the movie.
Read Rosen's full article here. Sounds to me like they made a movie about a little kid who fights totalitarianism and wins, when the books were (to quote the author)"about killing God."

The Dallas News' Religion blog has a story today on an impending "preach in" (actually homiletics conference) sponsored by the New Baptist Covenant. I thought that what the ABP said was a pretty good indication of why the SBC is (to use the Dallas News' words) "wary" of this new Baptist organization.
James Forbes, pastor emeritus of the Riverside Church in New York, is among those who will preach at the event. Riverside is jointly affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA and the United Church of Christ. It was founded in the 1920s by John Rockefeller as a monument to liberal Protestantism in New York City and has remained prominent in the nation’s theological and political affairs ever since.
The SBC has finally rid itself of liberalism, though there are still some left-leaning moderate elements. Why would we want to revisit all the turmoil and controversy of the past 25 years? The NBF numbers among it's leadership notable Baptists such as former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, both of whom have made clear their position on the SBC as it currently stands. Neither are friends of the resurgence, so why should the SBC be anything but wary of a group they are leading?
In the spirit of using this meme/category/whatever to copy things other people are doing, today I'm ripping off Tim Challies (hey, if I'm going to copy someone, may as well be him, right?)
And it's a topic that's near and dear to my heart -- Christmas music. I like holiday music in general (just wait 'til St. Patrick's Day ...), and there aren't too many holidays with the huge variety of music that Christmas has. And I've got a huge variety. 111 songs all together, just over 5 hours and 15 minutes worth. We'll hear it all twice on the way to my Mom's for Christmas.
Congress is looking into the finances of televangelists - that's old news. Ole Anthony, the man in charge of watchdog group Trinity Foundation, is The Man of The Hour. He's interviewed everywhere, quoted by everyone, and is the recognized authority on the financial shortcomings of megapastors.
Maybe Ole needs to investigate himself. And maybe the national news should report the entire story.

Warren, thank you for posting. You made some excellent points.
Can you add these questions to your list?
What were the terms of the settlement Ole Anthony received from his accident at the health spa? Please include all court documents.
How much of the members’ tithes and offerings and other donations have been spent for Ole Anthony’s vitamins, medications, especially pain medications, and other medical treatment over the last 20 years? Please include costs of medical treatment associated with the fire walking incident.
How much of Anthony’s medical costs has he paid for out of his personal funds (from the settlement) during the same time period?
Were the funds from the charitable donations or contributors to Trinity Foundation used to pay for Anthony’s medical costs rather than the settlement money which was supposed to be for that purpose?
How much of the foundation’s members’ tithes and offerings and other donations did the foundation spend from 1987-2007 to house and clothe Ole Anthony’s girlfriends? Please include costs of all gifts to girlfriends and “business” trips paid for with TFI funds.
In the 1980s Ole Anthony wrote a book, Crossfire. He has claimed that the book sold a million copies. Please indicate the amount of royalties paid to date on this book. Were the royalties paid to the foundation or Ole Anthony?
The 2005 Tax statement (Form 990) indicates approximately $50,000 annually costs for food service. Is this cost over and above the amount collected from the members and Levites for their meals? Since the majority of the alleged 700 meals prepared weekly are consumed by members of the Trinity Foundation, how does the foundation justify using tax-exempt monies for its members’ consumption?
The 2005 Form 990 indicates that there was over $15,000 in expenses for Trinity Foundation’s Bible studies held in the homes of its elders. Can you itemize these costs? Is the foundation using tax exempt funds to “rent” space from the directors of Trinity Foundation?
Thanks,

Thanks for that. I really think it's good that someone Ole Anthony is being asked the same questions that he's asking other ministries. And it's telling that he doesn't seem to be very forthcoming with the answers to these questions.
Hopefully, someone currently at Trinity will comment here, or I can get in contact with them to get some answers to these questions.

Wendy and Doug Duncan. We are tired of seeing you bash Ole' every chance you get. If Doug had a problem with Ole', why did he hang around for so long, and why were you there for seven years, Wendy. You are making money off of Ole' so you are going to say what you have to in order to do so. Doug was OK until you came into his life, Wendy. How many times have you been married, Mrs. Duncan? It's apparent that you haven't been listening to God for years, or you wouldn't be doing what you are, you sinner, you hypocrite. Now, move on and get lifes, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan. If anyone notes, these are the two people who attack any and everything posted about Ole', who is a wonderful, intelligent man who knows what he is doing and many people in the world thank him.

I don't doubt that many people are happy with Ole, or that he's helped a lot of people out. There's no doubt of that. Of course, the people he's got Congress investigating have also helped people out all over the world, and there are many people who are happy with them, too. I think that it's only fair that the Trinity Foundation be able to withstand the same level of scrutiny that they expect from other ministries -- and thus far, nobody's been willing or able to put them to the test.
It seems to me that Ole Anthony would be more than willing to allow someone to investigate him the way he's investigated Hagee, Hinn, Meyers, Dollar, etc.

Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are helping people who have been deceived by charismatic leaders and cult like religions. You see, these leaders will subvert the message of Christ because they need for their followers to make them feel equal to God and, by the way, feed their bellies while feeding their egos. Charismatic leaders deceive themselves, too. That doesn't make them innocent nor their followers innocent because we are all accountable for knowing the truth. I mean look at Ole's fruits. Is he kind, loving, forgiving, patient? What about his words? Are they wholesome and does he set a good example to children? When I met the man, he was meanspirited, condemning, harsh, and used foul language. Thankfully we have been forgiven by God's gift of Jesus whom we celebrate at Christmas. Does Ole celebrate Christmas or does he get caught up in some controvery so he can spin away and present his intellectual viewpoint while condemning those who don't?

People always look at me funny when they see me writing in my books. "Taking notes for a class?" they ask. "Nope," I answer, "Just found something interesting." Or "just had a question I wanted to note." Or ... you get the idea.
And they look at me like I'm an alien.
Now I can just point them to this article.
Congratulations to my alma mater, Liberty University, on their first ever football championship, capping off an outstanding season with a 31-0 victory over Gardner-Webb on the road in North Carolina. LU ends the season at 8-3, and undefeated in conference play. The jury's still out on an FCS playoff bid, though LU has been told they were in the running for an at-large spot. Those are still long odds, but maybe this time next year ....
Jerry's tailgating with Peter, guys. Outstanding job.
Book Review: The Identity Factor by James Houston Turner
I was set to not like this book. I've gotten a lot of small press/self-published books in the past few weeks, and most of them have been terrible. And the PR sheet on this one talked about how it was challenging the traditional evangelical view of the Pentateuch -- that Moses wrote it. So I figured that I'd read it, rip it, and move on. But The Identity Factor is actually quite good, and doesn't say much at all that would offend anyone who holds to the traditional view of Mosaic authorship of the Torah.
Basic plot line goes like this -- there's a tablet that was found in the 1920s that is an almost verbatim copy of major parts of Genesis. BUT it's 500 years older than the Genesis accounts, and it claims to have been written by Ishmael. AND it repeats the claim that Jews have been making for thousands of years -- that Palestine belongs to them, not the Arabs.
So you can see that a modern rediscovery of this tablet would cause some serious commotion -- and that's where the book begins. The tablet's been found, and the Middle East is about to explode in a ball of fire.
That's the simple plot. The book is nowhere near that simple. Tied in with the basic plot is the CIA's search for a terrorist, Abu Nazer. Nobody knows who he is, or where he is. But the CIA's getting close. And he's somehow involved with the tablet and it's re-discovery.
Every time you meet a character in this book, you start to wonder who they really are, and what they're really after. That's how complicated things get in this book. The Identity Factor is one of the best spy/thriller novels I've read in a while, just for that reason. Too often, you know exactly what's going on a quarter of the way through the book, and that makes wading through the rest a real challenge. But in The Identity Factor, you're really not sure until the final chapter what actually is going on, and who is who. And yet Turner does this without it seeming contrived.
The Identity Factor is a fast-paced book that you're going to have a hard time putting down. I highly recommend it.
