How Do I Change Title Bar

I want to include the post title in the individual archive pages, not just the blog title. Anyone have some quick and easy code for me to use in MT 2.64?

Unable to Access My Blog

Hello!

I came online today to post to my blog and when I tried to pull it up it was getting a page cannot be displayed after a long time trying. I even had trouble getting on here but I was finally able to pull it up. Anyone else having trouble?

I know it has something to do with the control panel -- or at least it did -- but I forget what the url is on that.

Hey Ace:

For some reason this
post is showing a 'not found' error when I try to leave a comment using the regular comment form, or click on the permalink. So I'm using the 'new coment thingy' to post this.

Cpanel is your admin interface to your area of the server. To
get to CPanel, just add /cpanel to the end of your site address
in the address bar of your browser - e.g. http://ace.mu.nu/cpanel

You'll get a Name and Password login box. You should have received
these in an email from Pixy when you were first set up. It's possible they're
the same as you MT login, but possibly not. If you don't have 'em, you'll need
to email Pixy.

Once in CPanel, the icon you're looking for is marked
File Manager. When you double-click on it, you'll be shown the
directory structure of your part of the server. You navigate by clicking on the
icons to the left of each directory (folder). Don't try
clicking on the name itself when navigating, that's for actually making a change
to the file itself - like renaming, deleting, changing permissions,
etc. (choices show in the upper right corner of the page.)

Just navigate your way through to the folder into
which you wish to upload, then click the Upload file link in that folder view.
Just follow the steps from there.

(apologies if this is overly basic - not sure of
your expertise and wanted to make sure you were covered.)

Severe Weather Warning!

Sorry about that, folks. We got taken out by the storms in the DFW area.

Actually, the storms passed uneventfully, but our hosting company had switched to backup power in case the grid went out. With the storms past, they switched back to the grid - and a 2500 amp circuit breaker blew.

Not good.

Clear As Mud

Pixy,

We have mu.nu, mee.nu, who.knew, and who.knows.what.else!

I'm getting confused, and even more importantly, the folks that I've handed out beta keys to are too!

Are the mu.nu sites going away when Minx migration is done? Or are we keeping the domains and redirecting to the new mee.nu sites? Can Marsha keep her secret from Todd? Or will Stacy spill the beans and ruin everything?

Sorry, got carried away there (which I highly recommend by the way). Anyways, when and if you get a chance, can you explain to us how this is all set up and how it's all going to work together and interact?

Pixy says: mu.nu will stay mu.nu, same as always. The Minx software that runs mee.nu will be available at mu.nu as well, but you keep your domain. No need to redirect; mu.nu will still have its own servers.

The one thing that is shared is the user database: If you sign up at mee.nu, mu.nu blogs running on Minx will recognise your login when you leave a comment.

1 I'm keeping my keys under wraps until the beta matures a bit. Once I understand how to run a blog on the new system, I'll get some bloggers with some level of sophistication to go at it.

2 One thing - the beta program won't run for all that long. Unless we run into some significant issues, mee.nu will start hosting free (ad-supported) sites next month, and once that happens, the beta will close.

The keys will be good up until the end of April, but I'm not sure how much longer after that.

6 Steve, I'm taking the exact opposite approach.

Minx, like any other blogging software, is going to be used by primarily unsophisticated users. If newbies can handle the interface and starting up tasks and be successful, then anyone can.

I fully expect 90% of my keys to lead to dead sites within 6 months. Such is the nature of blogging.

You'll need to register to comment - or log in if you already registered. And there will be private messaging and forums and polls and so on that will need you to log in, The idea is to give people reasons to keep coming back to mee.nu even if they're not actively maintaining a blog. Or rather, give users the tools to keep their readers coming back, and give those readers reason to want to log in and make more use of mee.nu.

Beta 'R' Us

3 Yes, that was a nasty surprise to find this morning. First time it's happened... but that doesn't help much. I've put an automated restart script in place.

When you're ready. Since it involves manual effort to translate the templates, I won't be forcing people to migrate according to a fixed schedule.

I have heard from quite a few of my readers that the spam filter is blocking the words 'teen' and 'teenager'. I have two teenagers, so that makes commenting on such posts difficult. Can we fix this?

1 The raw word "teen" had been blacklisted. It's been removed, so that should clear "teenager" too. If this comment shows, you're good to go.

Rotating Taglines

Is there any way to have the tagline/blog description be randomly selected from a pre-set list of variable phrases? I'd like to replace "Apathetic curmudgeonry from the Western District of the Commonwealth of Virginia" with something else, but the thing I have in mind would benefit from my aforementioned idea.

My code rotates a drinking toast in the sidebar, but you could place the code whereever you want it to rotate...

Stage 3

The next stage of the Minx beta, once I get a few more bugs knocked over the head and a few missing features in place, is an invitation beta for mee.nu.

Every mu.nu blogger will get a bunch of beta keys (five or ten to start with) that they can hand out to your readers. The keys are just alphanumeric codes, like A5EC78F, that you can email out to people.

The key lets the user sign up for a lifetime free "Express" account at mee.nu, which would normally cost $5 per month ($50 per year). That gives you 1GB of disk space and 10GB of bandwidth, which is enough for a smallish blog. (Typepad give 100MB of space and 2GB of bandwidth for that price, by comparison.)

Comment here or email me at andrew -at- pixymisa -dot- net if you're interested, and let me know how many keys you'd like. I'm hoping to start sending the keys out this Sunday or Monday.

Oh, and please don't post the keys on your blog. Each key is good for one person only, so you'll need to email or IM them. Feel free to run competitions or whatever you like. If you run out of keys, I'll be handing out more until I either run out (can only give away so many free acounts) or we hit the end of the beta period.

301 redirect? I'm getting nailed on SEO because every one of my posts looks like it has multiple distinct sources:

When Google sees the same article under different URLs, the ranking for all of them suffers, since it looks spammy.

Then why have different domains in the first place? Because in my case, the search for my name "steve janke" or "stephen janke" is one of the top ways to get to my site (I'm pretty well known in Canada -- go figure). So if I didn't own my own domain names, some pills spammer notice the searches and would grab those domains to host his crap.

So on the one hand, multiple domains can hurt your rank. On the other, not own those domains can hurt your credibility. The 301 redirect tells the search engine that these are actually the same site and to treat them as one.

Just to let people know why this matters. A lot of bloggers are only peripherally cognizant of search engine behaviour.

(By the way, the www prefix doesn't matter at all. Google is at least that smart.)

What is the mu.nu server software? Are you using an htaccess file to do the redirect?

Minx supports BBCode, which can make some formatting tasks easier, and lets commenters do more without letting them screw up your blog entirely.

I've posted a list of supported BBCode tags. You can try them out in the comments. Yes, you can post pictures and Youtube videos in comments. Yes, this will have restrictions before we get out of beta. (You'll be able to turn it on or off for your blog, or enable it only for friends, and so on.)

Categories

If, say, one would like the category(ies) of each post to appear under the credits/comments/trackback line for each post and a listing of all the categories to show up in the sidebar of a blog to appear, would it be a difficult thing to make happen?

Is there anyone out there would could assist with such a project?

Or even better, magically make it happen as I am tragically inept when it comes to all things technical? Typing this post is about as good as it gets.

I don't have the code handy for the categories down the side, but I'm sure it's quite similar -- except it would start with <MTCategories> and have a followed by a </MTCategory> ... but that will all change with the new system.

Jam Tomorrow

Sorry kids, your beta test got bumped to tomorrow so that I could get the comment moderation screen working right. The first beta release listed comments, but didn't actually let you do anything to them.

New screen lets you mark comments as spam, hide them, and delete them. Seems to work too.

Working on setting up the munu Minx beta now. Oh, yeah - I have to set up the smiley server. That first, then the beta. Right.

New entries aren't showing up on the main page of both hands, only on my archives. I was fiddling around with the entrails of my blog and f'ed up the whole thing.

When performing some minor surgery on the stylesheet maybe I left a sponge or scissors or something in there when I sewed everything up?

Can someone who knows what the hell they're doing please assist?

Minx Beta Test

It's here!

The first bunch of beta testers for the mee.nu site have been given their beta keys.

For the mu.nu side, I'm going to do it slightly differently:

Every mu.nu blogger, including co-bloggers, will automatically get an account at beta.mu.nu. Your username and password will be the same as they are in MT2.6. (For any MT3 users who don't have an MT2.6 login, I'll need to give you a beta key so you can create yourself an account.)

Your test site will be your username, minus any spaces or punctuation, .beta.mu.nu. So mine will be pixymisa.beta.mu.nu.

You can play around there to your hearts content. With the mee.nu beta, the beta accounts are permanent; with the mu.nu beta, we will transfer off the beta database to a new database as people become ready to migrate.

The accounts should be ready today or tomorrow; I'll post an update when it's good to go.
