What error is she getting? Is she just being stopped by the Blacklist?
Posted by: Jim @ at March 28, 2005 06:45 PM

Must be Blacklist, because I had her send me her comment, and I posted them. But Blacklist will recognize my IP as being allowable.
What to do from here?

Ask her what the exact message is that she gets. Blacklist will tell you why a message is blocked (though it can be a bit cryptic). If it's a banned IP, it will display a different message.

How did I manage to do this?
Okay... I tweaked my template just a tad. Nothing beyond centering a couple things and resizing a font. No big deal right? Well, somehow I've screwed up my calendar. Now, my snazzy March 2005 calendar shows I've only posted on the 13th and 21st, and when you click those dates, it sends you to Roxette Bunny's place.
Whahappen?
Update Ummm... nevermind. It seems to be fixed now. Wierd.

Trackback / Comment Spam
Is it just me, or does most of the comment/trackback spam come from old archived posts. I know a number of sites that close comments and trackbacks after a certain period of time--say, one or two weeks. I'm pretty sure there is a script for this. Wouldn't a quick and easy solution be to institute a no comments/trackbacks allowed policy after a post is a couple of weeks old?

We have a script installed for closing comments. There's a post here somewhere explaining it.
We still need to find one for closing trackbacks, though. That's also something missing from MT3.

Thanks.
MT Blacklist 2 automatically blocks comments to old posts, but not trackbacks. I'd be happy to install another plugin for that.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 24, 2005 02:42 AM

Rats. The plugin I was thinking of allows forcing moderation of trackbacks, not closing them. Looks like MT-Close 2 is still the only way to do that.
That said, I've had extremely high effectiveness on a couple of sites with renaming and obfuscating the TB script the same way as with the comment script. Unfortunately, its effectiveness lasts only a month or so, then the files need to be renamed again. Not sure if there's any way to make that workable with the massively-multiblogger MuNu setup due to the rebuilding requirement. (there is a way to automate the changing and rebuilding, but the server load would be intense.)

Actually, since theres 10 digits in the phone number, and you could probably guess the area code if you looked in the phone book and that takes it down to 7 digits to guess. And if you remove anyliklyhood of there being a 5 that means that theres only 8 digits that can go in each of the spots, so its actually 2097152 phone numbers to try. But I'm pretty sure theres also certain number codes (like 911, 811, 411, any 3-digit start code with 0) so that means its less.
Posted by: Mookie @ at March 16, 2005 01:34 AM

well since there's 10 digits (0-9) taking the 5 out narrowed it down to 9
So what's your area code sweety

Looking For A Few Good Munus
Hi gang.
I'm looking for a few volunteers to help get the Munu ball rolling again, setting up new blogs and all that stuff. I'm just finishing the setup so that other people will be able to create new sites and new blogs and import entries and stuff like that, and once it's done (which should be this week) we'll be all systems go.
You'll need some basic technical knowledge and aptitude, but it's all done through a web interface and there's nothing really hard. (At least, once I finish this one last script.)
Queue forms to the right.

Or: "In Minnesota, there's a school of thought to the effect that . . ."

Help with a Title
Hm. Have we addressed this?
For some reason, I'm having trouble changing the title of a post, because MT has identified the post as X, and in MT's mind, X it will remain until the end of time.
What I did was use standard title style, except that the word "is" begins with a lower-case
i (I was typing too fast; I must have unconsciously thought the word was "in," a preposition that should be lower-cased). So I tried to edit the post, but MT has this mind-block and just won't do it. I even tried rebuilding the whole shooting match. No go.
Any thoughts? It's such an odd little thing to happen.

I did a cleanup last night, Jim. Should be about 200 fewer entries. Hopefully that'll be enough for the time being.
Be warned, if you're trying to delete a large number of entries at once, that it locked up on me and refused to do it. I had to remove the checkmarks from about 1/2 the entries I wanted to delete before it would process. Did it in 2 batches instead.
That behaviour may have been caused by the fact it was full, but wouldn't want you to get caught with the same frustration.

Self Defence
Hi everyone.
One of our recurring problems here at MuNu is that when a lot of our blogs get hit with spam at the same time, the server chokes under the load.
I've now implemented a watchdog program. If it sees an unusual number of trackbacks coming in all at once (more than ten; I've seen as many as 150 at once during a spam flood) it will bite their legs off and piddle on the trackback script. After five minutes the trackback script will be unpiddled automatically.
(Fiddle fiddle.)
It now works for comments too. More than 20 comments arriving at once will result in a summary chomping and piddling, with automatic unpiddling after two minutes. I've made more generous allowance for comments since we get more of them and I think it's more important that comments are working than trackbacks.
This won't stop spam, but it should stop spam floods before they can cause any significant problems.
As usual, let me know if you see anything untowards happening. Particularly if it might be related to this change.

Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at March 07, 2005 12:17 AM

Well, it won't work against spam trickles, but we shouldn't get hit with 150+ spams all at once.
It hasn't triggered yet, so I'm still waiting to see if it really works.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 07, 2005 01:14 AM
4
It only affects trackbacks coming in, right? Sometimes I send out 20+ in linkfests...
Posted by: Simon @ at March 07, 2005 11:08 AM
5
Yep, only incoming trackbacks.
Also, even if you send out 20 trackbacks, MT does them one at a time. Spammers do them all at once. So if someone really links 20 munu blogs in one go, it will still work.
