Comments Are Hosed

I just tried to leave a comment at Tammi's place I get:

Invalid [] range "t-f" in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/([\w\-_.]+\.)?(l(so|os)tr)\.[a-z]2,|(babes|porn|boobs)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(cialis|meri

I see you added some blacklist stuff that looks much like the above Pixy. Since you added it, I didn't want to delete it... so how do we fix?

Thanks.

beta.mu.nu

Hi everyone.

If people are still using beta.mu.nu, it will be going away for a day or so while I migrate it off the old server (Kasumi) onto Midori, which will be handling all of mu.nu going forward.

Meanwhile, the Minx Migration should begin this weekend. Sorry it's taken so long.

Say Hello To Midori!

Midori - under construction now by our faithful team of builderbots - is a quad-core Xeon 3220 with 6GB of memory and a terabyte of disk. Midori will be taking over duties from Akane and Nabiki, which have been running mu.nu for the past year, and Kasumi, which quite frankly has been slacking.

(Kasumi was running the Minx beta and development environments, but then had a disk failure and I had to order another box (Kodachi) and move everything across. So since then it's only been running my blog...)

Then I'll be migrating mee.nu operations off Kodachi and onto Ukyo and Shampoo, and Kodachi will be reinstalled and come back as a second mu.nu server. And they'll all live in a virtual private rack with shared bandwidth, so we'll have 8TB a month to play with!

What this means to you:

Um, things will get faster.

And we'll have a few hours of downtime one Sunday in September while I move everything across.

And we shouldn't see any more of those situations where a spam flood brings the server to a halt.

Really.

Oh, and you get Minx too.

Almost Nearly Ready...

I'm back from the wish-I-was-dead (I had a nasty run-in with food poisoning, most likely salmonella, which wiped me out for about ten days) and preparing the last update to Minx before the migration begins. The update happens this Sunday, so from Monday onwards Minx will be open to all Munuvians.

I'll be posting some more details this weekend, but in the meantime, here are some pretty pictures courtesy of the new automatic banner generator thingy in Minx. (And that pop-uppy thing is also a new feature coming to Minx.)

Oh, and - we'll be moving servers next month. Staying with the same hosting company, though, so it should be a lot quicker and smoother than previous moves.

We'll be going from our current pair of dual Opterons (each with 2GB of memory) to a quad Xeon with 6GB of memory. That will be cheaper, faster, and easier for me to look after, so yay!

Comment Question

I just got an email from one of my readers. He doesn't have a blog, so when he posts a comment, his email is displayed. Turns out that some wanker grabbed his email addy from my comment section and emailed him asking for a link. He included my blog post with the comment as the place he found the email addy. You would think the moron might have figured out that someone with only an email address in that space, doesn't have a blog... but I digress. (I know I know it's spam... still it's annoying)

So, my question is, do we have some way in the version of MT we're using, to mask email addresses? I went looking, but if it's there, I'm missing it. I know it is done on other blog software, I just don't know if it can be done with this old version of MT.

Second question - will Minx mask email addresses for those who comment, but don't have a blog to link with their name when they comment?

Thanks!

Apology

Just wanted to apologize publicly for banning ".it" and ".cn"

I didn't realize that the "." would be interpreted as a command instead of a character.

Won't happen again.

I'm sorry.

Archives / Drop Down Menu

My archives list is getting rather long, so I was wondering if I could condense all those months into a drop-down menu. What code should I use and where would I insert it?

Updating to higher version of MT

Heya Pixy...

Question for 'ya: Anyway you can update us to the present version of MT? If this is possible, and before you do, what would this entail on our end? Our biggest gripe is that version 2.64 can only zap one spam comment (manually) at a time. Higher versions can do it en masse.

OR -- when will Minx be ready ... and what would that entail on our end?

Thanks as always!

Question for the Big Cheese

Pixy, there are about a hundred entries in the blacklist with the .cn suffix. Since someone removed ".cn" and the system won't let me put it back in, is there some way you can do your punctuation magic and consolidate all those?

(P.S. About a week ago the default # of searched comments went back to 100 again--can you knock it back up to a grand or so?)

Here's an example (Eric added these):

a7-r-dfb.cn
a7-r-dfi.cn
a7-r-dfj.cn
a7-r-dfq.cn
a7-r-dfu.cn
a7-r-dfv.cn
a7-r-dfw.cn
a7-rd-fa.cn
a7-rd-fd.cn
a7-rd-fk.cn
a7-rd-fr.cn
a7-rd-ft.cn
a7-rdf-c.cn
a7-rdf-d.cn
a7-rdf-e.cn
a7-rdf-f.cn
a7-rdf-g.cn
a7-rdf-k.cn
a7-rdf-t.cn
a7-rdf-v.cn
a7-rdfb.cn
a7-rdfc.cn
a7-rdfd.cn
a7-rdfi.cn
a7-rdfk.cn
a7-rdfl.cn
a7-rdfn.cn
a7-rdfp.cn
a7-rdfq.cn
a7-rdfr.cn
a7-rdfx.cn

This is just junk cluttering up the blacklist.....

Dead....

…. Ummmm…. Oops?.... I seem to have exceeded my bandwidth…. Can ya help out, Pixy?.... I am trying to work through the Hotlink Protection in cPanel X to keep this from happening again….

… sorry for the spot of bother…

.. oh, and while I'm thinking of it, I have been unable to get pings from other's links or send trackbacks since last June... (not that it has been a big priority.. heh heh..) ... the last trackback that I got was from my post on when Acidman passed away in June 2006.... it's kinda depressing to see that as my last ping every time that I log in to post.... so, can you help out?....

... all the best to you and yours,

Eric

Another Blacklist

Okay I went and looked, I do NOT see "fru" in the blacklist. I can't find it in a search except in the middle of one url that Pixy entered. Yet, any words with that string are blacklisted... anyone have any ideas? What am I missing?

An MT4 question

We're looking at Movable Type 4 here at work, and my sys admin has asked some questions. I've tried to explain the MT model to him (it's a file processor, and not a file server), but I think he is stuck in a Community Server way of thinking.

So here is a question he asked that to me painfully obvious to answer, but in case there is something hidden in it, I wanted Pixy and other knowledgeable people to look at it.

How does this software work in multi-site environments? Say I want to install MT4 open source on a server and have both Blog1 and Blog2 running on that single install on the same server– possible? How? I know their commercial Enterprise product does this – does the open source one?

Don't worry about Enterprise and Open Source distinctions -- I'm working on identifying the differences between them, if any. But the idea of running multiple blogs from a single install of MT with multiple authors is what we do here on mu.nu. That's normal, right?

What's up with "IT"?

Ok, Fluffy evidently doesn't like phrases with the letters "IT" in them... I have tried to leave comments at 3 different MuNu blogs and had them all rejected. The offending phrases?
"kit"
"cit" -- this is pissy, as it is in my email addy
"uit"

I q"uit"

Blacklist

I'm not sure how to get to the blacklist and remove something, nor am I skilled enough to attempt it without some down to earth instruction, however, someone has blacklisted "blog.com" which is a strange one to block. Several blogs are listed as something like http://thisismyblog.com and while I'm not sure if this is correct, I've had a few folk tell me they can't get through because the filter bans blog.com

Help?

Praise from the Northwest US

Hi Pixy, and a top O' the morning to ya. Tim Birdnow (http://Tbirdnow.mee.nu)is one of those folks that I gave a beta mee.nu link to and he has been using it. I asked him what he thought and this is his reply:

Hi GM!

I`ve had a very pleasurable experience with Mee.nu, though I can`t say I`ve exactly mastered it; I still don`t know how to load pictures, for example. Still, the fault is mine because there is a comprehensive guide explaining such things, and Pixy is ever willing to help when asked. I just haven`t devoted enough time to working with the system.

I like it better than Blogger, although I wish there were an archive feature and search bar. It took me a bit to get used to the different coding, but I picked that up quickly enough and, in fact, it`s easier to insert links and the like. I think Mee.nu has a bright future!

The only other problem with it is lack of broad-based access, insofar as Blogger appeared everywhere and people would come in just by clicking ``next blog`` , and it was much more prominently featured by Google. This can`t be helped until mee.nu gets larger, however, and there is nothing to be done. I`ve noticed a lot of people have abandoned ship with Blogger for Wordpress or other sites, and I have been much happier with the results I`ve been getting technically, so it is worth it. I just hope Pixy doesn`t start putting security encryptions on, or I`ll have the same problem I had with Blogger; my security won`t allow any sort of access to secure sites, and I can`t figure out how to fix it.

Send Pixy my thanks please, GM! He`s done a fine job!

Thought you might like to know of the Kudos

GM.

More on Gibberish Spam

Other than being a royal pain in the kiester, what is the purpose of these damned gibberish spam attacks. I've removed a bunch over the last week and they are seemingly more prolific than sites for fake watches and cialis. Sheesh....

Cometh Minx, O' Pixy Misa, bring thy blessings to we bloggers that are famous and not so famous, shower us with security on the web and make us grateful to all the wonders of a true master of coding. Amen!

Who the&(%*&#!+* did it this time?

Comments are toast courtesy of yet another frigging fool who doesn't understand that they don't know how to use the blacklist.

Here's the error:

An error occurred:
