Delf, it is not ubnreasoable for emplyers to verify that the documentation emploees provide is in fact legit. All it takes is verifying the SSAN with the Feds to insure it is valid. I had an accountant who did this as a matter of routine when I hired a new employee. The law requires two forms of ID,,a social security card--not a number--and another form of identification. This is not too hard for employers to understand and the fact that they are breaking the law and pleading ignorance is a cop out. In order to stop the invasion we are going to have to stop the demand for their services and the best way to do that is to go to the souce--the people that are hiring them.

I agree that it sounds simple, Guy, but one of the major growth industries in the immigrant community are false ID papers...the majority of which will stand up to the simple calls you refer to. And if the employer can show he made a good faith effort, that is all the law requires him to do at present.
That some employers don't even go to that small effort truly IS criminal.
As a LEO, there was more than one occasion were I used the government records availible to me involving SSN #'s and had at least three come back as valid that I KNEW were not.
In fact, give me $600, and a week and I will provide you a "valid" SS card and drivers license, and possibly a birth certificate to go along with them.
