Great Minds and All That
A Small Victory has similar thoughts to me on the relative value of Harry Potter and Neil Gaiman's Stardust. Comments by her readers show that we're not the only Stardust fans either.

I should probably scroll down and put this comment on the entry where you discussed fantasy, but I have to go to work soon and these authors' names, which had been hiding in the dusty crevaces of my brain, popped out last night as I was trying to fall asleep, and, amazingly, I remembered them this morning:
John DeChancie
Roger Zelazney.
Now if I could only remember why I wanted to tell you about them.....

Zelazny, definitely. I've never read DeChancie - in fact, the name doesn't ring a bell. What had he written? (Too lazy to look it up...)

He's written a whole series about a castle with portals to different worlds...funny and entertaining. Castle for Rent, Castle War! Castle Kidnapped, Castle Perilous... Great series.

Thanks Susie! Yes, the name has now set off faint bells ringing far away. Past time for me to go visit my favourite bookstore (Galaxy, here in Sydney).
